Roper Lake State Park offers diverse glamping accommodations in southeast Arizona with convenient access from Safford. The park features two distinct campgrounds, Cottonwood and Gila, each providing different camping experiences at 3,130 feet elevation. Winter temperatures typically range from the 40s at night to the 80s during daytime, making it suitable for year-round visits.
What to do
Fishing from multiple docks: Anglers can access the water from several designated fishing areas at Roper Lake State Park. "Very nice campgrounds, close to the lake. Plenty of space between campsites. Kids were able to ride bikes on the numerous paths around the campgrounds and lake," notes Ryan V.
Hiking at Mt. Graham: Located near Gila Campground, Mt. Graham offers cooler temperatures and forest trails. "Sunday I drove up Mt. Graham till the road turn to dirt and enjoyed the cold and quite," shares Mindy H., who appreciated the mountain's escape from summer heat.
Riparian exploration: Water-based activities extend beyond the main lake. "Just a walk from the river and a nice riparian area. Campsites have a ramada with picnic table and a fire ring," explains Jacob M. about the natural areas at Riverview Campground.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Many glamping spots offer more privacy than typical campgrounds. "The sites are large with plenty of screening for privacy. I would not stay in the hook up loops which are more typical Arizona State Park Campgrounds offering no privacy with sites usually crammed together," notes Lisa S.
Clean facilities: Maintenance standards remain high across accommodations. "For starters the staff here is very friendly. The facilities are immaculately clean. I mean the cleanest campground restrooms I've ever seen," states Ryan R. about his cabin experience.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The lake environment attracts various bird species. "Waking up early to watch waterfowl on the lake at sunrise is going to be one of my most memorable camping experiences," shares Colby F. about his stay at Grande Vista RV Park.
What you should know
Seasonal construction: Recent infrastructure improvements affect some areas. "Sadly, there is construction going on in the park right now. The sites are pretty private and there are nice picnic table covers. Unfortunately, the dump station is closed for a while," reports Shawn from a 2024 visit.
Weekend crowds: Visitor patterns vary significantly by day of week. "I got there on Thursday afternoon and all was nice and quite and calm. They started to come in droves, Friday afternoon. Little kids on bicycles riding in the roads like crazy people and making so much noise," explains Mindy H.
Varying campground layouts: Willcox-Cochise KOA offers different amenities than state park options. "Large sites, lots of amenities including a restaurant & pool, easy access to the highway, friendly staff," notes Rich J., highlighting the different glamping experience there.
Tips for camping with families
Bike-friendly paths: Several campground loops connect via paths suitable for children. "Kids were able to ride bikes on the numerous paths around the campgrounds and lake," reports Ryan V., emphasizing the recreational options beyond water activities.
Swimming beach options: Designated swimming areas provide safer water access. "Very clean and well kept park, beach swimming area is very large and never felt crowded by people! Plenty of shaded picnic areas," shares J K.
Playground availability: Some sites include play structures for younger children. "Small play area for the kids, level gravel parking, not cluttered, good place for the night," notes C.W. about their family stay.
Tips from RVers
Road access limitations: Some glamping spots near Central, Arizona have narrow approach roads. "A little tricky to get to, especially with a trailer as the road is basically a single lane," warns Justin G. about access challenges.
Full hookup availability: Utility connections vary between campgrounds. "Each site has their own picnic table and FHU. Water spigot is on the ground, not elevated. Laundry, showers, rec room (pool table, full kitchen, DVDs, books) and BBQ grill are included," reports C.W. about infrastructure at one location.
Highway noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise. "Very well maintained with decent size sites and ample area to run your dogs. I would give this 5 stars if not for Highway noise," explains mary F., highlighting a common concern for some glamping areas.
