Amazing views

Camped about a quarter mile west of crazy jug point right on the edge! Very breezy so we didn't do a campfire. One heck of a drive on a scary forest service road. Use a hi clearance vehicle.

Can't get a Grand Canyon Permit, try the Kaibab National Forest

Sometimes getting a permit into the Grand Canyon is impossible. I have applied and been turned down. But don't be discouraged. There are some awesome trails and campsites in the Kaibab National Forest. Crazy Jug is probably the most famous but if you have all wheel drive or an off road Bike, you can get almost any where in the forest for a great adventure.

make sure you have a road map. There are hundreds of back roads that act as a maze so don't get lost :)

Frequently Asked Questions

What views can I expect at Crazy Jug Point?

Crazy Jug Point offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Grand Canyon that rival those from designated park viewpoints but without the crowds. From camping spots along the rim, you'll enjoy sweeping vistas of colorful canyon walls, dramatic depth perspectives, and expansive sky views. The location is particularly spectacular during sunrise and sunset when the changing light creates dynamic colors across the canyon landscape. The remote setting also provides exceptional stargazing opportunities when skies are clear.

Are permits required for camping at Crazy Jug Point?

No specific permits are required for camping at Crazy Jug Point itself, as it's located in Kaibab National Forest where dispersed camping is generally allowed. However, if you plan to venture into Grand Canyon National Park from this location, separate backcountry permits are necessary and can be difficult to obtain. Standard Forest Service dispersed camping rules apply - camp in previously used sites, practice Leave No Trace principles, and observe any seasonal fire restrictions. Always check with the Kaibab National Forest office for current regulations before your trip.

What are the best camping spots at Crazy Jug Point?

The premium camping spots at Crazy Jug Point are found about a quarter mile west of the main viewpoint, right along the rim edge. These dispersed sites offer the most dramatic views and excellent privacy. Due to the exposed nature of rim camping, be prepared for breezy conditions that might limit campfire options. For more sheltered alternatives, look for spots set back slightly from the edge among the trees, which offer protection from wind while still providing access to the spectacular views.

How do I get to Crazy Jug Point campground?

Crazy Jug Point is accessed via a challenging Forest Service road that requires a high-clearance vehicle. The route can be intimidating with rough terrain and steep edges in some sections. Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is highly recommended, especially in adverse weather conditions. Some visitors have successfully reached the area using off-road bikes as an alternative. Plan your route carefully using official Forest Service maps, as GPS may not be reliable in this remote area of Kaibab National Forest.
