Kaibab National Forest borders Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim along a stretch of forest service roads where free dispersed camping is available to those willing to navigate gravel and do some advance research. The area centers on roads like FS611, FS610, and FS219, which branch off Highway 67 near DeMotte Campground and run south toward the park boundary. Sites range from wooded pullouts in the fir forest to open-terrain positions overlooking the Saddle Mountain Wilderness. No reservations, no fees.
Road conditions and vehicle size matter considerably here. One reviewer with a 38-foot motorhome found a dozen sites large enough to accommodate the rig within the first two miles, but noted that sites shrink further in and recommended high-clearance or shorter vehicles past that point. FS610 narrows noticeably toward the park boundary, and the final stretch to the bluff at the end of FS219 has ruts and jutting rocks that require 4x4 capability. Andrew G. recommends "getting up early and catching that sunrise over the rim" from sites near the eastern edge, which several reviewers confirm are reachable by passenger vehicles.
Cell service is essentially absent throughout the dispersed area. AT&T has no signal, and coverage only returns near the Grand Canyon Village. The developed North Rim Campground, a few miles south, has a free dump station and potable water, though the entrance is tight for large rigs. Vault toilets are available at the East Rim viewpoint, roughly three miles in on FS611.
One important caveat: regulations here have shifted. A former Grand Canyon National Park employee notes that FS610, FS611, and FS219 were open for dispersed camping as of summer 2022 but may not appear on the Motor Vehicle Use Map printed in February 2023. Calling the USFS office at Jacob Lake, (928) 643-7298, before arrival is worth the effort given that illegal camping carries significant penalties. Nearby dispersed alternatives include Forest Road 216 South, Forest Road 611, and Kaibab NF Dispersed off NF-611A, all within a mile. Campers who prefer a developed base can browse campgrounds around North Rim for other options in the area. This dispersed area works best for self-sufficient campers with flexible rigs, a paper map, and a willingness to confirm access before committing to the drive.
