Homer's location on Kachemak Bay creates a microclimate that averages 52°F in summer months, with typical temperature ranges of 45-65°F even during peak camping season. The area sits at sea level with camping options spread along Homer Spit's 4.5-mile peninsula and surrounding higher elevation areas. Waterfront campsites throughout the region face exposure to regular wind patterns coming off Cook Inlet.
What to do
Beach exploration at low tide: Low tide at Homer Spit Campground reveals extensive tide pools where campers can walk nearly 15 feet from shore to examine marine life. "It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide. It was nice to sleep on the sand though with air mattresses to avoid some of the rocks!" shared Laura H. who camped at Homer Spit Campground.
Fishing adventures: The Anchor River State Recreation Area offers multiple campgrounds with direct river access for salmon fishing. "Stayed at the Steelhead one, there are 4 Choices of Campgrounds, Right by the River, Catched my First King Salmon on my Fly Rod," reported Siegfried M. at Anchor River State Recreation Area.
Water taxi excursions: Use camping locations as a base for water taxi rides to explore surrounding areas. "Homer is also the place to get a water taxi to see Kachemak Bay, Halibut Cove, Seldovia, Nanwalek and Port Graham. Water taxi rides are roughly 75$ round trip for one person... give or take a few bucks and cheaper for kids," notes Aimee H.
What campers like
Campsite privacy variations: While Homer Spit sites offer minimal privacy, campsites at Fishing Hole Campground provide a less crowded alternative with basic amenities. "We stayed 4 nights. It is a gravel lot next to the fishing hole on the Homer Spit. The camp host was very nice. It is the best spot to dry camp on the spit as it is easy to walk to everything. At $20 per night it is half the cost of the next cheapest place," reports Michael H. from Fishing Hole Campground.
Clean facilities: Ocean Shores RV Park maintains exceptionally clean bathrooms and shower facilities. "Owner is very nice and professional. Showers well lit and perfectly clean. Amazing views of the ocean and easy beach access," notes Kelly K. from Ocean View RV Park.
Scenic camping spots: Whiskey Point offers both RV sites and cabins with premium ocean views. "There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead. Sites are close together but have water, electricity, a small table and fire pit," explains Jennifer G. who stayed at Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park.
What you should know
Weather preparations: Wind conditions affect tent camping significantly, especially at beach locations. "I only stayed here for one night. We had planned to stay a second, but the wind was so bad that it blew over our tent and woke us up at night. It was definitely a gorgeous view, and if we had known what to expect it might not have been so bad!" cautions Katie S. about Mariner Park.
Reservation timelines: Heritage RV Park fills quickly during summer season. "Make reservations because this place fills up," advises Tanya B. who stayed at Heritage RV Park.
Seasonal availability: Most pet friendly camping options near Homer, Alaska operate only from May through September, with specific dates varying by location. "Open 5/7/2019 - 9/15/2019" lists the season for Baycrest RV Park, while Whiskey Point Cabins operates "May 1 - Sep 30."
Site spacing considerations: Many RV parks feature closely spaced sites, particularly those with premium views. "The spots are a bit narrow, but most spots have full hookups, and there is a short trail down to the beach," notes Jay D. about Ocean Shores RV Park.
Tips for camping with families
Bring wind protection: Family tent camping requires additional wind protection strategies, especially on Homer Spit. "This is my family's 3rd year camping on the Homer Spit. We love it every year. Who wouldn't love waking up and going to sleep looking at the ocean?! It does get a bit windy, but it keeps away the famous Alaskan mosquitoes and provides a great opportunity to watch the para-surfers," advises Staci J. at Mariner Park.
Plan alternative activities: Having indoor options matters during weather changes. "The showers are very clean and there is an excellent breakfast restaurant next door," notes Jay D. when describing Ocean Shores RV Park's family-friendly amenities.
Choose sites based on accessibility: Select campgrounds with shorter walks to amenities for families with young children. "The bathrooms are across the road and the fishing lagoon is right next door," notes Eric N. describing the family-friendly layout at Homer Spit.
Tips from RVers
Hookup positions: Be aware that hookups may be positioned oddly at some sites. "The lane between rows is narrow. If you 'pull through' to your site through an empty one, it is easy. If you have to back in it may be a challenge and you may need to get people to move tow vehicles," advises Kerry B. about Ocean Shores.
Site selection for views: Premium view sites often fill first and command higher prices. "We paid $45 a night. This was for no hookups. They do have a dump station and water fill which is good," reports James B. about waterfront sites at Homer Spit Campground.
Laundry facilities: Heritage RV Park offers exceptional laundry amenities. "Very nice camp sites with full hookups. Excellent showers, very clean and laundry facilities larger than any other campground we have ever stayed at," notes Jerry O.
Sloped terrain management: Many pet friendly camping areas near Homer, Alaska require leveling equipment. "The whole park slopes downward toward the beach bluff, however they did a reasonable job terracing each site so it is mostly level. As a result each site uphill is 12 to 18 inches higher," explains Kerry B. about Ocean View RV Park.
