Glamping accommodations in Homer, Alaska sit along the shores of Kachemak Bay, surrounded by mountains and glaciers visible across the water. The glamping season runs from May to mid-September, with sites typically requiring advance reservations during peak summer months. Most luxury camping options are accessible by road, though several yurt rentals require water taxi service.
What to do
Wildlife viewing along the Homer Spit: Visitors staying at Homer Spit Campground can explore tide pools during low tide. "The tide goes out about 15 feet and comes back in regularly. It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide," notes Laura H.
Fishing charters: Charter companies operate from the Homer Spit area between June and August. Water taxis cost approximately $75 per person round-trip to access remote areas. "Four hours from Anchorage is a must see and do destination.. Homer Alaska. It is a very small town that gets lots of visitors in the summer months. Especially June, July and August thanks to charter companies who will take you out to get halibut, salmon and whatever else the magical ocean has in store for you," shares Aimee H.
Hiking from Tutka Bay: Tutka 1 yurt rental provides direct access to South Grace Ridge Trail. "We did an out and back hike from the South Grace Ridge trailhead to the summit of the ridge which provided some of the most beautiful views I have ever seen! The yurt is spacious and comfortable with its padded bunks," reports Morgan W.
What campers like
Ocean views: The elevated glamping sites at Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park offer panoramic vistas. "There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead," says Jennifer G.
Beach access: Direct beach access makes Homer Spit Campground popular despite limited amenities. "It doesn't get much better than camping on a beach down on the Homer spit! We luckily had clear skies and no rainy/windy weather when we camped here," writes Laura H.
Clean facilities: Baycrest RV Park maintains well-kept grounds and amenities. "Campground is well maintained. About 20 min drive from Homer spit. Sites are a little tight but the views are amazing!" mentions Brad H.
What you should know
Limited privacy in peak season: Most glamping sites become crowded during summer months. "Sites are small and very close to each other, and some of the sites the hookups are on the opposite side, but I guess that depends if you back in or pull in. Would definitely stay here again on the off season," notes Kevin R. at Driftwood Inn & Homer Seaside Lodges.
Weather unpredictability: Wind and rain can change quickly along Kachemak Bay. "Be ready for any kind of weather.. as you are surrounded by the ocean," advises Aimee H.
Road access limitations: Only one road connects Homer to the main highway system. "There is only one road in/out of Homer. There was a bad accident that closed the road for 24 hours so we had to wait another day to get out," reports Steve C.
Tips for camping with families
Bring appropriate bedding: Beach camping requires preparation for comfort. "It was nice to sleep on the sand though with air mattresses to avoid some of the rocks!" suggests Laura H.
Consider shoulder season: For a less crowded experience with children, visit outside peak summer months. "Very crowded. The first row is on the beach, but goes very fast!" warns Mel H.
Choose shower facilities wisely: Baycrest RV Park offers better shower facilities than some beach locations. "Decent washer/dryers and showers behind office but no food/although that wasn't an issue as we grocery shopped and ate out at some great seafood places," shares Steve C.
Tips from RVers
Vehicle access considerations: Many glamping sites have tight access roads. "The sites were fairly close together, but not uncomfortably so. What made Sites A–C special was the ocean view from the patios," notes MickandKarla W. at Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park.
Hookup availability: Full hookups are available at select locations but may require advance booking. "We stayed two nights while in Homer. Wanted a view of the bay so we paid $45 a night. This was for no hookups," explains James B.
Dump station locations: Homer Spit Campground provides dump station access even for non-hookup sites. "They do have a dump station and water fill which is good," shares James B.
