    Homer, Alaska

If you’re looking for someplace to camp on a beach where you can enjoy stunning mountain views, glorious sunsets, and whales dancing on the waves—all from right outside your tent’s door—look no further than Alaska’s Homer Spit. Located 230 miles southwest of Anchorage, where Alaska’s Highway 1 ends on a tiny finger of land extending out into Kachemak Bay, this oceanfront retreat rewards those who make the effort to get here. Nature lovers will relish the eagle and wildlife watching, anglers can cast for epic halibut and salmon catches, and foodies will enjoy the village’s farmers’ market and many eateries and art galleries.

The campground at Homer Spit features 122 campsites where tent and RV campers can make themselves at home across the bay from the glacier-capped peaks of Kenai Peninsula. Campsite options include beachfront tent sites (no hookups), beach view RV sites with electrical hookups, and interior tent and RV sites with electrical or full hookups. Most sites are equipped with picnic tables, and all have access to drinking water, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and a dump station. The campground has Wifi service, and is within walking distance of most of the town’s shops and restaurants. Sites can accommodate vehicles/trailers up to 40 feet. Rates range from $30–$50/night; reservations recommended.

Known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” anglers can fish from the end of the spit or charter a boat for fishing offshore. No gear, no problem. Many fishing outfitters rent and sell fishing gear. Several wildlife watching tours are available, including tours by air for whale and bear viewing. After a day on the bay, enjoy food and beverages at the world-famous Salty Dawg Saloon, or live music and dancing at Alice’s Champagne Palace. There’s also a few local breweries and a winery for sampling some of the local elixirs. Homer also hosts a variety of fun and flavorful events through the summer worth checking out.

Explore the last frontier from one of the many Nomad Shelter yurts across the state. From rustic yurt, and B&B's too secluded "glamping" retreats with kayak tours, dog mushing, hiking, fishing, and so much more!

The China Poot yurt is about a 20-minute ride (~6 miles) from the harbor. It's tucked into the back of the north side of the very shallow China Poot Bay, accessible when the tide provides a minimum of 8 ft of water for most boats to run on (check with your taxi operator about timing). The water adjacent to the yurt offers a good, sheltered anchorage for own-boaters.

The China Poot is one of the many Yurts offered through Alaskan Yurt Rentals.

Ferry from Homer to Kachemak Bay

We ferried from Homer, which is a GORGEOUS ride. As mentioned below, we did an out and back hike from the South Grace Ridge trailhead to the summit of the ridge which provided some of the most beautiful views I have ever seen! The yurt is spacious and comfortable with its padded bunks. Such a beautiful experience.

The yurt is approx. 12 miles from the spit, on the N. shore of Tutka Bay, and is about 100 yds. from the drop-off on a rocky beach and is protected from breezes by the mature forest found in Tutka Bay. A solid gravel bottom provides good places to anchor your own boat. Suggested trips: The yurt is very close to the South Grace Ridge trailhead. Hike up switchbacks through the old growth forest, traverse the alder and grass transition zones, and find the alpine zone at about 1800’. There are spectacular views from the sharp ridges you encounter as you head N. towards the summit of the ridge. Look for rock ptarmigan in the alpine areas, mt. goats and marmot. Tutka Bay is also a perfect place to kayak, weather permitting. Go S.E. to the head of the bay and look for beaches and coves exposed at low tide that will provide landing spots. Head N.W. and just outside the mouth of Tutka Bay you’ll enter Little Tutka and find the Herring islands. You can also use the yurt as a starting place for a multi-day kayak trip, heading up the bay.

Nothing like waking up on the Homer Spit

    Wow. Just wow.

Waking up on the spit in Homer Alaska is unparalleled to any other camping experience I've ever had the pleasure of having.

The sand is comfy so you aren't sleeping on tree knobs or rocks, just soft, soft sand. Homer is a beautiful little spot near the end of the Kenai Peninsula on the Katchemak Bay.

I loved waking up and going to get delicious breakfast and coffee at the Two Sisters Bakery. Dont forget beers at the Salty Dawg Saloon.

    LOVE HOMER

    Always beautiful views

Camping on the Homer Spit is always beautiful! We enjoy being on the beach for our endless Alaska summer nights with the views of Kachemak bay as a backdrop. The tidepooling was fun this weekend with the low tides.

Basic no frills camping - but that view!

First, let me not bury the lead, and start with the fact that if you have not been to Homer and taken in the beautiful scenery, the views of Kachemak bay and the surrounding mountains and glaciers are something that absolutely need to be seen in person. Just breathtaking. Since this campground lies on the very flat sea level strip of sand and gravel known as the spit, it offers great views in every direction.

This seasonal (it is Alaska, after all) campground is about halfway down the Homer spit (on the way to the very end which is called Land's end). The campground itself offers mostly RV sites (which it looked like had all amenities you could want) and a handful ~maybe 20 tent sites. Good amenities with clean bathrooms, had wifi, and saw a laundry room but did not use it for my stay. I can't speak for the RV experience, as I've only used the tent sites. Stayed here for a couple nights, before and after a job opportunity leaving out of Homer. The campground is still about ~2 miles or so walking down to the main harbor, as well as most of the shops and few restaurants closer to Land's end. Yes, this includes the infamous Salty Dawg saloon, which is a great spot to grab a drink and epitomizes the Alaskan fishing culture. I would add that having a vehicle is not essential if you only plan on walking down to the end of the spit, and there are a dozen or so restaurant choice if that is your thing, but a lot of stuff is just out of realistic walking distance back up the hill in Homer proper. Overall, this campsite offered a good value and a chance to really soak in the gorgeous view and lifestyle of the fishing town of Homer.

    Homer Spit Campground

Homer is 1 in a million.

We camped here for 1 night and ended up having to leave because of severe wind and rain. All in all the camping is nothing special but the scenery is ridiculous. Right on the homer spit. Your seeing wildlife in the ocean as well as eagles flying around and all walking distance to the bars and fisheries in homer.

There are countless tours and all boats for rent all around homer. Catch that halibut! We were there on a thursday and they don't do halibut fishing trips. We rented a boat and did a whale, puffin, otter tour instead.

Later we walked to get dinner and when we came back our tents were gone. We thought someone stole them and all of our camping gear. Nope! It was just the wind. Even with all our gear and rocks in the tent the wind picked our tents up and threw them a couple football fields. Rookie move. we spent the night and moved inland for the storm.

    Cheers!

    Good Option for the Area

Enjoyed this location and without reservations, glad to get it. Had reservation at spit campground that was in horrible shape, un-level, crowded...so passed and took a risk on this one. Very accommodating folks. As others have said, the campground is a good stop with wonderful views if the weather cooperates (it did when I was there in August). With a truck/camper combo, dropping the camper there and using the truck to get to the spit and Homer was 15-20 min. Place is well maintained and the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly with campground and local information. Found lots to do in the area. Campground is full/crowded in the summer, but site was nice, functional albeit a challenge to back in with the width of the road at my site. Just off the highway so some noise but tolerable. Decent washer/dryers and showers behind office but no food/although that wasn't an issue as we grocery shopped and ate out at some great seafood places (must do). Incident: There is only one road in/out of Homer. There was a bad accident that closed the road for 24 hours so we had to wait another day to get out. Homer and the Kenai was a great visit.

Homer Alaska - On the Spit

Four hours from Anchorage is a must see and do destination.. Homer Alaska. It is a very small town that gets lots of visitors in the summer months. Especially June, July and August thanks to charter companies who will take you out to get halibut, salmon and whatever else the magical ocean has in store for you.

Homer is also the place to get a water taxi to see Kachemak Bay, Halibut Cove, Seldovia, Nanwalek and Port Graham. Water taxi rides are roughly 75$ round trip for one person.. give or take a few bucks and cheaper for kids.

The Spit as it is called is the end of the Road here.. literally. The Spit is surrounded by water.. yeah that's why it's called a Spit lol. It has Restaurants tons of little shops. Some geared toward touristy things but some of the best hand crafted made only in Alaska gifts that keep you coming back for more. You may have heard of the infamous Salty dog saloon.. if you dare - go in and order a salty dog here.

If you choose to camp on the Spit you will have two choices.. One is the RV/ Camper side and one is the Tent on the beach side. I have done both and although I prefer tenting hands down.. nothing beats an RV with wet sticky sandy dogs.. love some of that in your sleeping bag! (not)

There is a fee to tent camp, it's not much. You can build a fire right on the beach and set your tent so as you lay back, free from the wind, your whole view will just be ocean and mountains. Truly amazing! You can by wood by the bundle or just comb the beach for drift wood. If you do bring your dogs just be courteous of others and bring your own doggie bags :)

There are honey buckets for use.. but sometimes we walk the spit and find a real bathroom. (There are state toilets on the RV side, which is directly across the only road on the Spit)

On the RV side the fees are a bit more.. but you get full electrical hook ups, bathrooms, showers, and laundry if you need it. WOW! Bring your bikes to ride the spit or good shoes to walk around town. Also be ready for any kind of weather.. as you are surrounded by the ocean.

    Beautiful, free & Busy!

Lots of eagles, but don’t feed them!

people love this campground and it’s near the tourist part of homer, convenient for the farmers market too.

wonderful place to camp, but there are other more private campgrounds nearby and it’s even worth going across Kachemack Bay for glorious private campsites.

    Homer Spit Campground

    The Famous Homer Spit!

There are a few city run campgrounds on the spit in Homer.  This mini peninsula juts a few miles out into Kachemak Bay and creates one of the main tourist areas for the town. This is another of Alaska's pot-holed, parking lot camping areas where tents can be set up just off the perimeter and RVs of any size can take up residence within it. Picnic tables and fire rings lie between the parking and the beach and there’s a general esprit de corps of the folks hanging out there.

Like many Alaskan camping spots what the site itself lacks in charm, is simply overwhelmed by the spectacular views in any direction. That's why you come here in the first place. The bathroom situation is simple, a couple of port-o-potties with a hand washing station. Recycling and trash dumpsters are right next to the toilets. Water can be filled up for free at the city RV dump station in town, right across from the Post Office on the Sterling Hwy. Payment can be made at the automated permit machine.

The lack of any trees made solar power a no-brainer, even on the cloudy days. With our solar suitcase from Renogy and 200W of solar on the roof, we were able to recharge our battery without any issues.

There's a great bike path that leads to the many tourist shops, bars and restaurants on the spit. The spit is also a great launching area for kayaking in the ocean side of the spit- launching on the other bay side can be tricky because of tides and mud. Parking along the spit is pretty easy and there are large lots which allow for overnight parking if you are going to use the area as a launching pad for other adventures either on the Kenai or further afield. Homer is known as a particularly good spot for Grizzly Bear tours into Kobuk Valley National Park (the holy grail of grizzly sightings). Be sure to tour the Alaskan Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center, it’s difficult to get out to the Aleutian Islands, but through the engaging films and interactive displays, you can get a feel for the history and wildlife of these remote areas.

Homer has all the services that campers need including grocery stores and good restaurants (we loved Fat Olive and Carmen’s Gelato out on the spit.)  A short drive along East End Road will take you right by Fitz Creek General store, which is a treat for all kinds of cool stuff -- the chocolate muffins alone are worth the drive alone. The village farmer’s market is truly amazing with veggies, baked goods, prepared food, and lots of other arts and crafts.

Camped not exactly at this location but down the road a bit.. tent camping only. $20 a night per tent, per tent. First come, first serve. Homer Spit Campground

    Great area, so-so campground

Hire a kayak or go out on a boat tour to see wildlife you will never forget. The campground itself is nothing special (and showers cost extra), but you have 270 degree views from the “spit.” There is grocery and restaurants nearby. It seems expensive but everything in AK is, and you have easy access to the town of Homer. Very memorable nature here.

    Fantastic

This past weekend was my first trip camping in Homer. Decided to find a spot on the spit and I was not disappointed. The view was fantastic and watching the sunset was gorgeous. You do end up really close to others camping on the beach as well but when it’s a weekend in the summer I’m not sure what else you’d expect. Being within walking distance to everything is also a plus.

    Great views and amenities

Our second time staying here. There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead. Sites are close together but have water, electricity, a small table and fire pit. We didn’t stay in the cabins but they look nice and the property, general store, and washing facilities seem well maintained. Recommend for a night or two when visiting Homer.

    Homer Spit Campground

    Great views but busy.

This campsite is right on the beach on the Homer Spit. Can't beat the views but it's crowded and a lot of people walking around. Very touristy. In the summer food is easy to find if you want to eat and it's by the famous Salty Dawg, out but I'd be cautious about leaving your tent with volume of people there. Beach is awesome and campfires on the beach are even better. Can get windy which can make it fairly miserable in a tent but overall really cool place to camp at least once to say you did.

    Camping on the beach

It doesn't get much better than camping on a beach down on the Homer spit! We luckily had clear skies and no rainy/windy weather when we camped here. The tide goes out about 15 feet and comes back in regularly. It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide. It was nice to sleep on the sand though with air mattresses to avoid some of the rocks! The bathroom facilities were nice but a bit of a walk especially at night - we peed next to our car usually. Otherwise, great location! Walking distance to the water taxis, restaurants and bars on the spit. I loved every minute of being there right on the beach!

Ranger Review: XtraTu fNeoprene Deck Boot Hi at Homer Spit Campground

My wife and I along with a couple friends made it down to Homer for the first time this last weekend. The scenery was amazing the whole drive down as well as while on the spit. Our campsite had a dedicate 10x20 parking spot that could easily fit 2 cars along with plenty of room on the beach for our large tent. Along with the tent spot each site gets a picnic table and a fire pit to enjoy the evening and to cook on. There are plenty of shops to walk around to, food and also fishing charters or from the shore. My new Xtratuf Neoprene Boots kept my feet dry and sand free while wandering the beach. I even went into the water and they kept me warm ass the water was a little chilly. They are light weight and seem very durable. I especially like the little wedge on the back of each to help get them off.

    Homer Spit Campground

    Superb location & view

You really can't go any further down the Homer Spit once you hit this campground! It features spots for RV's and tents (we've done both) on gravel and grass. No trees to separate sites - it's all pretty open and you're right up next to neighbors. The sites along the waterfront have amazing views onto Kachemak Bay where you can watch the sea, wildlife and boat traffic - they are more expensive though and windy. This campground can get loud at night, especially during holiday weekends, since the amount of functional daylight hovers near 21 hours and people stay up.

Just a short walk to the beach and slightly longer jaunt to the shops and restaurants on the Spit. We tow our boat to the campground and launch it each day when fishing. There is some extra parking along the edges of the campground if you have extra cars, boats, trailers, etc.

Flush toilets and running water are available - as are showers and laundry for a few bucks for guests. Staff is friendly and keep the place pretty clean. Busiest times are Memorial Weekend, 4th of July and Labor Day - call quite a ways in advance to secure your spot during these holidays.

    Homer Spit Campground

The worlds most scenic parking lot campground

I camped SIX nights at the Homer Spit campground and there were so many great and not so great things about it.  We stayed four nights in site 6 (interior), and two nights in site 104 (on the beach)

Overall the campground gets a 5. It's super well managed, it's clean and convenient and the view are BREATHTAKING. (the interior sites get a 0 for being scenic)

There are 3 types of site

    - Beach front (you camp on the beach, and there are no hookups)

    - Beach view (you have a front row beach view and there is a plug in)

    - Interior (you are basically camping in what feels like a walmart parking lot with a view)

Most people who visit the spit campground are here for 1 or 2 nights max, and about 80% of them are in RVs. There is a strict 11 am checkout and 3pm check in, so the place is pretty empty during the day, and at night looks like an RV lot.  But it's still awesome.

The sites are small and there is nothing between them besides a log so you know where your boundaries are.  Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. There are about 150 sites. There is one bathroom which was very clean nearly every single time I used it and it has hot water!  Showers cost 2x per person if you're staying at the campsite and they were FANTASTIC - so clean, and hot, and not timed, and amazing water pressure.

    --- (the negatives)

    - Many of the electrical 110 outlets at the interior sites did not work. This was a small problem for us because we were trying to work in the mornings.

    - There was pretty much nowhere for dishwashing. Dishwashing was forbidden at the main water point, with signs to wash dishes at the hose that was also used for feet rinsing at the beach. This wasn't a problem for most people who were in their RVs - but if you're planning to tent camp and cook, you will likely want a dishwashing bucket/bin.

    - In the morning the main water point was usually overtaken by a line of RV's filling up the water tank. It wasn't a problem unless that was when I wanted to refill my water...

    - The interior sites are not at all scenic. We faced a big dirt pile and a safeway tractor trailer when we were in our campsite. You're staying there for the location, remember, and if you walk 10 feet you will see all the mountains.

    ++ (the positives)

+ You're literally right at the end of Homer Spit at the campground and you can walk to all the shops without having to fight all the other people for parking!

+ The wifi worked across the property with no problems

    + OMG, the view.

+ If you don't want to make coffee or breakfast, La Baliene and Sue the Bus are just across the street.

+ the team literally checks every site every day, they clean the trash out of the fire pits, and actually make sure that everything works.

    Otters & beach camping

We camped here a few years ago to see the release of a rehabbed otter pup. Exceptional views and wildlife, doesn't get any more Alaska than this. Seemed like most sites were pretty large and relatively private. Basic facilities, well kept, really nice for a city site. Always love camping on a peninsula.

    Great view but tight squeeze

The view was the best part, but it felt cramped. Decent location, only about a 15 minute drive to the spit.
