Homer sits on the shores of Kachemak Bay with multiple RV campgrounds located at elevations between sea level and 345 feet above the water. Most campsites in the area are on gravel pads with spectacular views of the bay and surrounding mountains. Camping season typically runs May through September with average summer temperatures between 50-65°F.
What to do
Beach exploration during low tide: At Homer Spit Campground, campers can explore tide pools when the water recedes. "The tide goes out about 15 feet and comes back in regularly. It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide," shared Laura H.
Fishing charters: Book a charter from the spit for halibut and salmon fishing. "It's all right on the water and a two minute drive to all the charters on the spit," notes Jerry O. from Heritage RV Park.
Visit local attractions: Take time to explore the gift shops and restaurants on the spit. Eric N. mentions, "There are tons of little gift shops on the spit and there is some great ice cream just up from the campground."
Water taxi adventures: Book water taxis from the Homer Spit to explore Kachemak Bay and nearby communities. "Homer is also the place to get a water taxi to see Kachemak Bay, Halibut Cove, Seldovia, Nanwalek and Port Graham. Water taxi rides are roughly 75$ round trip for one person," shares Aimee H.
What campers like
Ocean views: Most RV parks near Homer feature views of Kachemak Bay. At Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park, "There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead," says Jennifer G.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain excellent shower and bathroom facilities. At Ocean Shores RV Park, "The bathroom and showers were excellent and clean," according to Dennis S., while Kelly K. adds that "Showers are well lit and perfectly clean."
Beachfront camping: Direct beach access is available at multiple locations. Laura H. describes camping at Homer Spit Campground: "It doesn't get much better than camping on a beach down on the Homer spit! We luckily had clear skies and no rainy/windy weather when we camped here."
Wildlife viewing: The area offers excellent opportunities to spot local wildlife. "Eagles soar overhead," notes Jennifer G. about Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park, where the common area provides a perfect vantage point for wildlife spotting.
What you should know
Campground terrain: Most RV sites in the Homer area require leveling equipment. "The whole park slopes downward toward the beach bluff, however they did a reasonable job terracing each site so it is mostly level. As a result each site uphill is 12 to 18 inches higher," explains Kerry B. about Ocean Shores RV Park.
Advance reservations: Summer months require booking well ahead. "Make reservations because this place fills up," advises Tanya B. about Heritage RV Park.
Variable weather: Be prepared for changing coastal conditions. Aimee H. notes about camping on the spit: "Be ready for any kind of weather as you are surrounded by the ocean."
Parking challenges: Some RV parks have tight spaces that can make maneuvering difficult. Kerry B. explains, "If you have to back in it may be a challenge and you may need to get people to move tow vehicles. Smaller motorhomes and short trailers may not have any issues."
Tips for camping with families
Beach activities: Children enjoy exploring the shoreline and tide pools. "It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide," shares Laura H.
Transportation options: Bring bikes or comfortable walking shoes to explore. "Bring your bikes to ride the spit or good shoes to walk around town," recommends Aimee H.
Holiday considerations: Expect crowds during holiday weekends. Eric N. reports about Homer Spit Campground: "Camped on the spit over the 4th of July. It was really packed with people, but a really great time!"
Site selection for families: When booking, consider proximity to bathrooms and facilities. "The bathrooms are across the road and in my experiences are only occasionally maintained," notes Eric N., which might be important for families to know.
Tips from RVers
Site layouts: At Driftwood Inn & Homer Seaside Lodges, Kevin R. notes, "Sites are small and very close to each other, and some of the sites the hookups are on the opposite side, but I guess that depends if you back in or pull in."
Fish cleaning services: Some RV parks offer specialized services for anglers. Lynn G. mentions that Alaskan Angler RV Resort "also fillet, vacuum pack freeze and ship your catch. We really enjoyed ourselves here."
Shower costs: Non-guests may use facilities for a fee. Qing L. shares, "Took shower only $7 for none guest. Pretty clean and water temperature is good" at Homer Spit Campground.
RV maneuverability: Consider your vehicle size when choosing a park. Steve C. notes about Baycrest RV Park that his site was "functional albeit a challenge to back in with the width of the road at my site."
