    Montgomery KOA Journey

    Great little KOA

This KOA is just outside Montgomery. It has lot of drive through spots that are very long so perfect for big rigs. They have a few back in spots and some tent spots. They also have a very nice cottages and cabins. They have a laundry facility and clean shower rooms. Plenty on space for your dog to run. It has a large fire ring with lots of chairs around it the main part of the camp but no individual camp rings. Each site has a picnic table. The staff was super friendly and accommodating (we needed a later than 11 check out and they were fine with that). They recently re did the community center where you can watch TV, visit or play games. They offer free coffee, cocoa and tea here in the community center. The have a great walking trail. They have a few full time RVers here but it is clean and quiet and we had no issues. On your drive in the driveway is a bit steep and you’ll need to swing wide to make it in but as long as you know you’ll be fine.

    Awesome stay

My kids and I absolutely loved it here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We did tent “glamping” so we had electric, water and wifi nearby but still enjoyed our time away from concrete buildings. We had a fire pit, picnic table, and parking to ourselves. The pool came in clutch since it is very humid and hot over there. It was nice, CLEAN and refreshing. My kids are not too big so we had enough space to play backyard games not sure there is enough grassy area for older kids or adults. You can walk around and down to the pond and check out the surroundings for added entertainment. The bathrooms and showers were tidy and clean. I really did love it here and based on my experience here I will be looking at other KOA Journeys to visit. My experience is based on a tent site and I’m fairly new to camping. Hope this helps!

    Gunter Hill

    Quiet in the Shoulder Season

In New England it's challenging to find a campground that is open in late November/early December but that's certainly not the case in the south! Sometimes I experience the opposite problem, tons of people everywhere thanks to the warmer weather. However, when we pulled into Gunter Hill this time of year we were surprised to see how empty the place was. There were a few large RVs in the area but only one other tent camper like ourselves.

The sites are nicely spaced out so even if there had been a lot of people there, it wouldn't have felt too crowded. Large old trees with beautiful Spanish moss provide plenty of shade in the sites. The river also runs pretty close to some of the sites as well. Our site had a nice paved pull in as well as a gravel area with a large picnic table and fire ring. In addition there was a stand up grill available as well. On the other side of the concrete pull in was a nice flat spot for us to pitch our tent. Plenty of room for everything here. Water and electric hookups were easily accessible right in our site. The ground below the water spigot drains well and doesn't create a large mud puddle when you use it, a piece of campground engineering I have come to greatly appreciate. The site has a nice lantern/trash pole that includes a small shelf, great for all sorts of things!

The bathrooms are nice and were all maintained. We didn't use the showers but the toilets and sinks were more than adequate for morning and evening necessities.

The location is great, right outside of the city and perfectly placed for us to stop on our road trip from the national park sites in Tuskegee and heading to them in Selma.

Despite being two females and the campground being relatively empty, we felt incredibly safe. I mention this because this is not always the case when we camp in southern states.

    Overnight stay

We just stayed here overnight on our way to Destin, Fl. I liked this campground our site was very spacious. It had a concrete pad a graveled area too. Each site had a picnic table, a grill and a fire pit. The bathrooms were very clean. The showers were individual small rooms on the end of the bath houses. The water was hot in the showers. I did not notice any bugs or cobwebs in the bathrooms.

    Montgomery South RV Park

    Great Little Campground

I stayed here for 8 weeks while travel nursing at a local hospital. I had previously moved from another campground I did not feel safe at. Boy was this place a breath of fresh air! The staff was very nice and accommodating! They patrolled the grounds on golf carts frequently. There are only two single serve bathrooms with showers on site, but they were well maintained and also had heat lamps for the wintertime. The laundry room was small with only two slightly dated washers and dryers, but they got the job done. You just had to time it to get in the queue. Each site had a picnic table, but sadly not all of them had fire pit rings. Mine was one that did not. All of the sites were gravel paved, but they were very level. The staff works hard to upkeep the sites by delivering fresh gravel to sites with a tractor when campers leave. The staff was very kind to come by and warn us when we were expecting freezing temps to help prevent our pipes from freezing. They even carried my trash bag up to the dumpster once on their golf cart so I wouldn’t have to! My biggest complaint here was the spotty WiFi, but that’s to be expected at most parks. This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate. Overall, I highly recommend this park! Loved staying here, and would definitely return again! It’s a quick hop on the interstate to get to Montgomery or Prattville.

Kick Back Ranch & Event Center, LLC

    Best. Christmas. Ever

We stayed at Kickback Ranch over the Christmas holiday, and it was the perfect setup for our family. I reserved an RV site for my teardrop camper—it was peaceful, quiet, and had everything I needed to unwind. I also booked a few cabins for the rest of the family so everyone could have their own space. The Wagon Wheel cabin ended up being our gathering spot—it was spacious, well-stocked, and made meals and family time easy and comfortable. We were able to hop on the Wi-Fi when needed, and the outdoor grills came in handy for cooking a few good meals together. The staff were kind and helpful anytime we had questions, but otherwise let us enjoy our stay without interruption. It was a great winter getaway, and having everyone close but with their own privacy made it even better. Would absolutely come back.

Guide to Troy

Camping cabins near Troy, Alabama provide year-round access to outdoor recreation opportunities within a 40-mile radius of this southeastern Alabama town. The area sits at approximately 500 feet above sea level with a subtropical climate featuring long, humid summers and short, mild winters. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, making cabin rentals practical even during December through February when visitor numbers typically decline.

What to do

Fishing at nearby ponds: Cypress Landing RV Park offers fishing opportunities with dock access. "This is a very clean, well kept campground. They have cabins, rv/camper spots, and tent spots. Nice dock for fishing, not alot to do for older kids, there's a small playground for smaller kids," notes one camper.

Trail rides for beginners: The trail system at Heart of Dixie Trail Ride accommodates novice riders. "This place has a lot of amenities pool, fishing, horse and atv trails that are great for beginner horseriders... This is not a campsite in the deep woods it's out in the open so don't expect a woodsy feel although the trails make up for it they are well kept."

Spring swimming: Natural springs provide swimming opportunities during hot months. One visitor to J & J's Place at the Springs describes it as a "Great value for money with a spring on the doorstep. 4 RV sites with water and electricity(30/50 amp) hookups(no sewer). Showers and toilets are very close and clean and well maintained."

What campers like

Clean private bathrooms: Campers consistently mention bathroom cleanliness as a priority. At The Oaks Family RV Park & Campground, "The bathhouse has 4 large private bathrooms with showers, toilets, sink and an oversized bench for your stuff."

Pool access during summer: Several campgrounds offer pools to combat the summer heat. One camper notes: "The camp sites don't have a lot of shade but you can cool off in the pool."

Winter accessibility: Gunter Hill remains accessible year-round with consistent maintenance. "Always enjoy Gunter Hill...plenty of space and scenery is good anytime of the year..we have been here several times," writes one regular visitor.

What you should know

Cell service varies by location: Reception can be inconsistent in rural areas. At Montgomery South RV Park, one long-term camper reported: "My biggest complaint here was the spotty WiFi, but that's to be expected at most parks."

Seasonal staffing affects services: Several campgrounds operate with reduced staff during winter months, potentially limiting amenity access.

Insects require preparation: Bug spray is essential, particularly from March through October. "Be prepared for heat and mosquitos. It was a small campground, but still offered an enjoyable experience."

Some cabins require significant deposits: Many cabin rentals require security deposits ranging from $50-100 beyond the standard rental fee.

Tips for camping with families

Consider cabin proximity to playgrounds: Some campgrounds strategically position cabins near play areas. "The playground is awesome it has a zipline and it will hold grown-ups we like to play on, it is very well kept."

Look for family-friendly swimming options: For families with children, swimming options with gradual entry points work best. "My kids and I absolutely loved it here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We did tent 'glamping' so we had electric, water and wifi nearby but still enjoyed our time away from concrete buildings."

Book early during school breaks: Cabin availability decreases significantly during spring break (mid-March) and summer vacation periods (late May through August).

Ask about safety features: When traveling with small children, inquire about cabin safety features like secured windows and outlet covers.

Tips from RVers

Level sites reduce setup time: Concrete pads at many locations eliminate the need for extensive leveling. "We had a great experience camping here! We're seasoned tent campers but just bought our first RV and had a ton of questions. Robbie was so helpful and knowledgeable, he made our stay super easy and shared all kinds of helpful tips."

Weekday arrivals recommended: Traffic congestion during weekend check-in periods can cause delays, especially at campgrounds near highways.

Water pressure varies significantly: Some campgrounds maintain high water pressure systems. "Water pressure in campground is 80 psi."

Advance reservation requirements: Most cabin accommodations require 48-hour advance reservations, with cancellation policies varying by location.
