Best Campgrounds near Eclectic, AL

The central Alabama region surrounding Eclectic features diverse camping options centered around Lake Martin and the Alabama River watershed. Wind Creek State Park, approximately 15 miles northeast of Eclectic, offers over 500 campsites with waterfront access to Lake Martin, one of Alabama's largest reservoirs. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Gunter Hill and Prairie Creek provide well-maintained facilities along the Alabama River system within a 30-minute drive. Accommodation types range from primitive tent sites to full-hookup RV pads, glamping setups at Hideaway Cove, and cabin rentals at several state parks. Most developed campgrounds maintain boat ramps and fishing access, making water recreation a primary attraction for visitors.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact camping experiences in the Eclectic area. Summer months bring high humidity and temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. As one camper noted, "Be aware if you're there during a string of heavy rain days as some low lying sites may become flooded." Winter camping offers milder conditions with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, though occasional cold snaps occur. Many waterfront sites require advance reservations, particularly at Wind Creek State Park and Gunter Hill during summer weekends and holidays. Cell service varies throughout the region, with limited connectivity in more remote areas. Verizon users report 1-2 bars at Prairie Creek Campground with modest data speeds.

Waterfront sites consistently receive the highest ratings from campers visiting the Eclectic area. "The view is amazing! The water is right behind us!" reported one visitor at Gunter Hill's Catoma Loop. Shaded sites are particularly valued during summer months, with many campgrounds featuring mature tree cover. Concrete pads at Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Gunter Hill provide level surfaces for larger RVs, while more rustic options exist at smaller facilities. Wildlife sightings are common, including alligators in some areas. "There was a 3-foot gator around most of the weekend," noted one Prairie Creek camper. Insect activity can be significant, particularly ants and mosquitoes, with several reviews mentioning preventative measures. Bathhouse quality varies widely between facilities, with newer installations at Wind Creek receiving positive reviews despite occasional maintenance issues.

    Chilton County Minooka Park

    Fine for big RV’s

It’s more of an RV park than campground. There are spaces for tents, but they don’t have picnic tables. The trees are actually behind the sites. So, don’t think about a hammock. The bathrooms are clean, but there are no showers.

    Hollins Hunting Camp

    Open and quiet

Best for overlanding/camper/tents. No marked sites, just pull in and find a spot. I got in around 8 and there were only a couple people here, lots of space and easy to find a private spot. Hardly any bugs, no amenities

    Gunter Hill

    Overnight at Gunter Hill Cmpgrd

We stayed overnight on site 35. It has full hookups , however the sewer was a bit far from the paring pad. If you have a single black tank hose this may be N issue. However, seeing as we only stayed 1 night I did not plan on hooking up anyway. The site is right across from the bathroom/showers which are individual rather than community type layout , and they were clean and well maintained. For the kiddies there is also a sizable modern playground right next to the bathhouse. The park attendant at the entrance was very pleasant and my pass was ready and available in the rack outside the check-in station which made it extremely easy. It was a Thursday night following 4th of July and there were several others there but only a small number of other campers. Reservations can be made online at recreation.gov

    The Backyard RV Resort

    Great Campground

Reservations made yhe night before online. The campground has not changed nanes yet but will be known as Unhitched Montgomery. Some short time stays and a bunch of long term stays. Clean bathhouse and great outdoor gathering areas, really like "the hangout" area. Pet friendly. Laundry available. It seems secluded but there are a lot of conveniences nearby. People at front desk were very friendly. Easy pull through sites. Highly recommend.

    Chewacla State Park Campground

    Close to Buc-ees and I-85!

I called on Sunday afternoon and immediately connected to a young lady who assured me that a site was available. The loop is nicely designed, full hookups, passing your target on the left (better visibility). There are glamping tents for rent. Several hiking trails, including a waterfall trail are inside the gate checkpoint. The park is close to town, meaning abundance of food options and cheap gas (2.499) on June 6, 2025.

Kick Back Ranch & Event Center, LLC

    Best. Christmas. Ever

We stayed at Kickback Ranch over the Christmas holiday, and it was the perfect setup for our family. I reserved an RV site for my teardrop camper—it was peaceful, quiet, and had everything I needed to unwind. I also booked a few cabins for the rest of the family so everyone could have their own space. The Wagon Wheel cabin ended up being our gathering spot—it was spacious, well-stocked, and made meals and family time easy and comfortable. We were able to hop on the Wi-Fi when needed, and the outdoor grills came in handy for cooking a few good meals together. The staff were kind and helpful anytime we had questions, but otherwise let us enjoy our stay without interruption. It was a great winter getaway, and having everyone close but with their own privacy made it even better. Would absolutely come back.

Wind Creek Atmore Casino RV Park

Free Overnight also available in the parking lot

This is a great spot to stay the night. The casino has an actual full RV park here as well, but they also allow overnight parking in the RV day parking area, or even in the regular car parking lot if you prefer. The RV parking area is there for patrons to use while they’re inside gambling or eating at the restaurant, so they expect that people will want to park there for the night on occasion, since the casino is open 24hrs. We stayed for free in the RV parking area for the night with no issues. We went in to the RV park office to ask permission and the manager was very nice and welcoming.

Huge grassy area for the dogs. Great night, very quiet. There are 3 actual RV “spots” and then about 5 more level concrete pads, if the spots are taken. Nobody else stayed the night when we stayed there. This spot seems to be where the sheriffs like to come and chill.

The Alabama Power Company created Lake Martin in 1926 by damming the Tallapoosa River, forming one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States with 750 miles of shoreline. Camping sites near Eclectic, Alabama offer varying terrain from waterfront locations to wooded settings with notable temperature variations between waterfront and inland areas.

What to do

Fishing opportunities year-round: Lake Martin Recreation Area provides access to one of Alabama's premier fishing destinations. "This place isn't fancy but it is a military owned campground. With that being said, sure I've been to far better places! But for the price it's totally worth it! You have amazing fishing, and a beautiful lake there!" notes camper Brendon W.

Mountain biking trails: Chewacla State Park offers trail systems for cyclists of all skill levels. "Many of the sites back up into the woods for shade and a hint of privacy with plenty of space to setup outside. Beautiful hiking, amazing mountain bike trials, and lake swimming give you plenty to do in the park," reports Jared W.

Historical exploration: Fort Toulouse-Jackson Park contains archaeological sites and reconstructed forts. "This is a National Historic Site with preserved/restored sites of historic French and early American forts from the 1700s-early 1800s. There are frontier re-enactments at various times of the year," explains Tim G.

What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Gunter Hill receives consistent praise for its site layout. "Very long and level concrete pad. Great Verizon signal and numerous free digital TV stations to choose from," notes Rick G., while another camper mentions "Large sites, shaded, have sewer hookups, concrete pads, many on a beautiful lake."

Private camping spots: Several campgrounds offer secluded sites away from crowds. "This is a great little place to hide away for a few days and just enjoy the outdoors," says a visitor to Fort Toulouse. At Hideaway Cove, a glamping site near Eclectic, Michelle S. reports, "It was impeccable, secluded but still accessible by my 2WD car, plus a walk down a hill to the site."
