Best Campgrounds near Demopolis, AL

The Demopolis area of west-central Alabama features several Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds situated along the confluence of the Black Warrior and Tombigbee Rivers. Forkland Campground and Foscue Creek Campground provide developed camping with water and electric hookups, while Belmont Park offers more secluded tent sites with river access. Most campgrounds in this region are designed for both RV and tent camping, with many sites offering direct water access for fishing and boating. Chickasaw State Park Campground, located in nearby Gallion, provides a smaller camping experience with only three RV sites but welcomes tent campers. The waterways define the camping experience here, with many sites offering boat ramps and water access points.

Many Corps of Engineers campgrounds in the area maintain security gates that operate from 6am to 10pm, requiring campers to plan arrivals accordingly. Summer temperatures regularly climb into the 90s with high humidity, making water activities particularly appealing. Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds, with some visitors reporting the need for signal boosters. As one camper noted, "Foscue is about 10 minutes from our house and it's a quick getaway spot for us. Very nice grounds and waterfront sites are an option. Close to town in case you need to pick up something." Most campgrounds remain open year-round, though some facilities like bathhouses may close during winter months. America the Beautiful passes are accepted at Corps of Engineers sites, offering significant discounts.

Waterfront sites consistently receive the highest ratings from visitors, particularly those at Foscue Creek directly on the Warrior River. Campers frequently mention the peaceful atmosphere and wildlife viewing opportunities, including paddlefish jumping in the water at Forkland Campground. Fishing is popular throughout the region, with catfish being a common catch. Several campgrounds feature hiking trails, though they vary in maintenance levels. Mosquitoes can be problematic, especially after rain. One visitor to Forkland described it as "nice and quiet with many options for activities. Nature/bird trail, playgrounds for the kids, and a boat landing with quick access to the Tombigbee and Black Warrior rivers." For those without camping equipment, the local Walmart in Demopolis is considered a safe overnight parking option with clean facilities.

    Used dump station only

We were just passing thru but used their dump station. Super convenient and clean. They only asked for a donation. Very kind couple!

    Lenoir Landing

Worked for the night - quiet but neglected

We needed a spot that was somewhat remote for the dogs and this worked. Several pull off spots for camping from the entrance to the boat ramp. No fees. Some spots graveled and maintained with views of the river. Locals are nice and helpful. There are garbages and no one cares if you make a fire - very few campers on a Sat night - downsides - composting toilets gross, no functional water running and the river is gross, lots of trash - boat traffic, lots of bugs (specifically despite wearing long pants / using repelant we both got 100’s of chiggar bites) - 1 bar reception

    Overnight stay

This was a great place to stay overnight. Gravel sites . New owners are making improvements. Road to the campground was narrow and a little bumpy getting there but was reasonable for an overnight stay. The owner was super nice 👍

    Payne Lake Spillway

    Spillway recreation area

The Payne Lake spillway is a nice place to have a picnic and view the lake. There is a pavilion with four picnic tables underneath it and then there are isolated picnic tables around the area. They have fire pits and grills nearby for cooking. There are also bathrooms across from the pavilion. The boat ramp for the lake is right down the road from the spillway parking area. No camping is allowed in this area of the campground.

    Moundville Archaeological Park

    Tent camping not recommended

The rv sites look maintained. Tent camping is not. Ground is unkept so be careful of sticks poking holes in the floor. If you have a truck-mounted tent, you will have to get an RV site as you have to carry your tent a short ways. The rest of the park is great.

    Forkland Campground

    Right on the water

Had a nice spot right on the water. Lots of fisherman here and each site has a fish cleaning station. Place to put your boat in right when you enter the campground. Lots of mosquitos when the sun goes down so bring your spray.

COE Demopolis Lake Foscue Creek Campground

    Peacefull and Cheap

As an advid RVer its always hard to meet the title requirements. The park is easy to access off Hwy 80 and we chose a pill through {site 17} the site was clean and free of leaves, the park host even called us the morning of and let us know the site was open, she asked for a 1 hour heads up to be ready for our check in, all was ready when we arrived, she checked our senior pass and received a great deal at $12 per night. We had plenty of T-mobile service and streamed to our TV with no problem. Be prepared fro some mosquito action at around 5PM, so streaming TV will come in handy. Will book again this park, very pleased.
