Sibley State Park sits at an ecological crossroads in west-central Minnesota, where hardwood forest, oak savanna, and prairie meet in a configuration uncommon for the region. Oak Ridge Campground, managed by DNR Parks and Trails, occupies the wooded interior of the park rather than the lakeshore, and that distinction shapes the experience considerably. Sites here tend to be more enclosed by trees and more spread out than those at the adjacent Lakeview Campground — Sibley State Park, which sits closer to the beach but with less separation between sites.
As Deanna J. describes it, "Oak Ridge is mostly wooded with some prairie sites and is more private." That holds true through most of the loop, though site character varies noticeably. Sites in the lower-numbered range tend to be more wooded and enclosed, while those above 94 sit in more open terrain and work well for groups wanting adjacent spots. Sites 77, 78, 81, 83, 84, 87, 88, 90, 91, 93, and 94 have been specifically noted as large enough for bigger tents. Traffic on the one-way campground road runs fairly constant into the evening on busy weekends, something light sleepers should factor in.
The park's trail network gives campers access to Mt. Tom, the high point in the park, reachable by foot or mostly by vehicle with a short paved walk at the end. Lake Andrew has a swimming beach, canoe rentals, and a fishing pier. Wildlife sightings are common: deer, turkeys, raccoons, and a range of bird species show up regularly. Bird watchers in particular may find the savanna habitat productive for species not typical of northern Minnesota forests.
Facilities at Oak Ridge include showers, flush toilets, electric hookups, a dump station, and firewood available at the office for around $6 per bundle. The Camber Cabins — Sibley State Park are located nearby within the same section of the park. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead for holiday weekends, when the non-electric loop in particular fills quickly. The small town of New London is a short drive away for resupply, and those planning a longer stay in the area can browse places to camp near New London for additional options. Bring insect repellent: biting insects are minimal during the day but become more active after dusk, especially in summer.
Description
Sites are available in two campgrounds. Sites in the Lakeview Campground are near the lake and well-shaded. Oak Ridge sites include a variety of wooded and open locations.
