Hiking access is the main draw at Lafayette Place Campground, and it's direct. The Lonesome Lake Hut trail runs through the campground itself, and the trailhead for the popular Franconia Ridge loop, covering Lincoln, Lafayette, and Little Haystack, is within walking distance of the sites. Campers who want to beat the crowds on that hike have a real advantage here: trailhead parking fills fast on summer weekends, and starting from camp means skipping the scramble entirely. The Pemigewasset River also runs through the campground, accessible from several sites, and the paved multi-use path through the Notch connects to biking and walking routes in both directions.
Sites vary more than you might expect. Some are wooded with reasonable spacing and tree cover for privacy; a handful in a separate loop behind the camp store sit in an open grassy area with little shade. Site sizes are inconsistent, with some notably larger than their neighbors. Jean C. notes that "some of the sites along the river are better suited to tents than trailers," and a few sites border the Lonesome Lake Trail directly, which affects foot traffic past your tent. Reviewers suggest sites 33, 34, and 35 as among the quieter options.
Noise is the most consistent complaint. I-93 runs adjacent to the campground, and 18-wheelers pass through at all hours. Earplugs are a practical investment. Bears have also been reported at campsites, so food storage in vehicles is strongly recommended. Cell service is limited to nonexistent. On the amenity side, the bathhouse is well-maintained, with flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers with strong pressure, dishwashing sinks, and laundry facilities. The camp store stocks firewood and hiking essentials.
Reservations are strongly advised for summer weekends. The campground runs from mid-May through mid-October, with nights turning cold even in June, sometimes dropping into the upper 30s. Gabe calls the restrooms and dishwashing area "very clean," and staff consistently get positive mentions for helpfulness. At $35 per night with full hookup options available for RVs, some campers find the price a stretch given the highway proximity, but it remains the only developed campground inside the park. Campers wanting a backcountry alternative nearby can look at Liberty Springs Tentsite, about two miles to the east on the Franconia Ridge trail.
