Horse Creek Campground

The sound of Horse Creek flows alongside this small Forest Service campground, where two loops accommodate RVs up to 30 feet and tent campers among scattered trees. Located about 15 minutes from Dubois in Shoshone National Forest, the campground operates seasonally from late May through early September with standard amenities including vault toilets, bear boxes, and potable water.

Site selection makes a difference here, as campers note the more private spots tucked back in the trees fill quickly, leaving exposed center sites for latecomers. The level dirt sites include picnic tables and fire rings, with several positioned directly along the creek. "Site was on a level dirt surface; clean," reports Fred S., who appreciated the creek access from his waterside spot.

Cell service remains spotty for major carriers, and ATV traffic on adjacent roads can create noise during peak summer months. The campground stays open for hunting season after the official closure, though water gets shut off and fees are waived. Gentle hills surround the area, with day trip access north to Double Cabin and Wiggins Creek. For additional camping options in the region, campers can explore campgrounds near Dubois.

Bring extra layers for shoulder season camping, as temperatures drop significantly after dark even during warm days.

Campers regularly cited the exceptionally clean facilities and well-maintained sites, particularly those along Horse Creek. Some visitors noted privacy varies by site and ATV traffic can cause noise on adjacent roads during peak times.

Site 3

Easy 2wd road to access, a ton of ATVs on the adjacent road until well after dark and early in the morning. Good fishing.

Wonerful Primitive National Forest Campground

Camped here in the middle of Sept 2024. This primnitive campground was in offseason mode; open for hunting season. Usual fee was waived. Stayed in site #2 for one night; large site. Great site along Horse Creek and a smaller creek that emptied into it. Site was on a level dirt surface; clean. Included a bear box, picnic table and metal fire ring. Vault toilet was resonably clean considering the time of the year and had a little bit of tp in it. Water was shut off for the winter. Tent camping is possible; can't say this for hammock camping. Possible hiking nearby. No T-Mobile nor AT&T cell service. I was the only occupant in the campground. A few vehicles drove by. Otherwise, Quiet and peaceful. Would definitely consider staying here again. Loved this location.

Small, close(ish) to town, on a creek, nice spot.

I camped here for one night in early October, 2020. Cool campground that has apparently been "shut" for the season, so the normal fee doesn't apply. The forest service kept the campground open for hunters, etc. and aren't charging, so that's a win.

It's a somewhat small campground with two loops. When I got there all but one site were claimed, so I got the center site (#5) which doesn't have tree cover or much privacy. Definitely not the site I would have picked if I had more options - some of the other ones looked much cooler and more private, tucked back in the trees. Still, even with only one site to choose, it was still a really nice area.

There are gentle hills all around, and a nice creek running right next to the campground. Toilets on-site, but I didn't have to use them so I'm not sure if they've been locked for the season.

Heads up - it was nice and warm during the day, but the temperatures plunge once it gets dark. I was tent camping and it got COLD. If you're headed this way later in the year, be ready for that. The water bottle I left out froze, and everything was covered in frost when I woke up, including my tent.

Bear area, so bear lockers are provided. It's very dry, but apparently fires in the firepits are OK as long as you completely douse them out before you leave the site or go to bed. Given how cold it got, the fire was a godsend.

No cell phone reception on Verizon. About a 15 - 20 minute drive to the town of Dubois if you need to pick up supplies, although Dubois is quite small so you aren't going to get a lot of selection.

All in all, nice little campground. Would definitely camp here again, especially if I could get one of the more private sites.

Lots of Stars

Stayed here for the 2017 total eclipse. Cool hosts (Bev and Arvil), pretty creek, dark nights with lots of stars. Clean water (a little off color due to mineral content), cleanest and best smelling pit toilets I've ever encountered, large dumpster, room for RVs. Easy day trip from here north to Double Cabin, Wiggins Creek, and petrified forests.
