Along the Shoshone River five miles from Yellowstone's east entrance, Eagle Creek Campground sits within Shoshone National Forest at an elevation that keeps temperatures moderate through summer months. The US Forest Service maintains this 20-site facility year-round, though access depends on road conditions during winter storms.
Campers find sites arranged in two distinct loops separated by the entrance road. Sites 1-10 occupy the right loop, while sites 11-21 spread across the left side where a paved walkway follows the riverbank. Chaz in S. notes "there are sites by the Shoshone River including views," with site 9 offering direct river access via a short trail to a small beach area. Most sites provide both shaded and open areas among aspens, firs, and junipers, though spacing varies considerably between neighbors.
The campground operates under strict hard-sided camping requirements due to active grizzly bear presence. Tents and pop-up campers cannot stay overnight, and all sites include bear boxes alongside standard fire rings and picnic tables. Hand-pumped water, vault toilets, and dumpsters serve all campers. Cell service reaches some areas, though coverage remains inconsistent throughout the facility.
Access requires navigating a dirt road that can become challenging during wet conditions. The $15 nightly fee operates on a self-pay system with a 16-day maximum stay limit. Sites fill regularly on summer weekends, but weekday availability typically remains good. Laura M. found spots easily on a Friday afternoon, noting the first-come, first-served system works well for spontaneous visits.
Road noise from the nearby highway filters through dense trees, though the river's sound often masks traffic. Fly fishing opportunities draw visitors to both Eagle Creek and the Shoshone River, while trailheads 1.5 miles east provide horse camping access with public corrals.
