    Bighorn National Forest

Dispersed Free Camping off Route 20

Driving through Bighorn National Forest we found TONS of free dispersed camping off route 20.

Sites are primitive… No running water, no electric, no restrooms. Sites consist of previously used dispersed site containing clearing and fire pits. There are camping spots for tents and RVs from large to small. If the first spot doesn’t suit you just keep traveling down route 20 to the next.

Far apart and lots of privacy.

We camped along a stream in a 32 foot RV. We were visited by a mother and baby moose.

If you are seeking privacy, this is your place.

No facilities, stores or cell service. You must be prepared and self sufficient.

Decent, small campground. Few sites are level. Fire pit needed cleaning. Toilets were clean. Camp hosts on site, but never came by. Evidently there was a family reunion of sorts so some noise. They kayaked on the stream behind the camp sites.

    Lazy R Campground

Convenient & Quiet with Onsite Bakery

We picked the Lazy R for a quick overnight stay on trip to Missoula, MT.  We weren't expecting much, given that we were tent campers staying in an RV park.  However, we were pleasantly surprised we arrived to find a nice grassy campsite for a our tent and clean restrooms and showers.  The following morning, we opted to skip making coffee and oatmeal for breakfast and instead visited the onsite bakery.  Winner, winner, chicken dinner!  Hard to beat rolling out of your tent, walking 100 feet and getting reasonably priced gourmet coffee and fresh baked pastries for breakfast.  I will definitely stay here again.

    Greybull KOA

One of the best for an overnight stay

I can’t think of one negative comment, even the towns 9 o’clock curfew alarm was charming. The concrete sites are level and spacious with tables, fire pits and charcoal grills. The grounds are well cared with a small playground and dog run. Staff are friendly and helpful. There is a paved walk just steps out of the campground where we took a walk and watched deer. We only stayed one night but wish that all our campgrounds could be like this one.

    Island Park Campground

    Beautiful setting

Small but busy park. Best sites for views are along creek where you can watch moose beaver and trout in creek and meadow. Can get noisy before quiet hours. A lot of people drive through looking for campsite and kids were rambunctious when we were there. Great camp host

    Lazy R Campground

    Loved this one!

We stayed here for 3 nights on our trip from Texas. Quiet, pet and kid friendly, and the staff was great! Clean grounds that they are constantly working on- and the bakery was delicious for breakfast. Close to Montana, Big Horn National park, Sheridan, etc. great location! But the staff was just above and beyond- so friendly, so helpful, and we’d stay here again!

    Buffalo KOA

    Great bathrooms & showers

A bit lower key than most KOA’s (that’s a positive for me). Few kids, and VERY clean bathrooms and showers with appropriate hooks, dry shower entries (probably because they had great shower curtains). Sites had reasonable spacing and some shade. Nice pool.

    Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

    Typical KOA

Staff here is wonderful...friendly & helpful. Campground is cleaner than most, showers & bathrooms also were clean. Big Goose Creek runs alongside the campground, and downtown Sheridan is just a few miles away. But it's expensive (almost $60 for water/electric only), the campground is between the freeway and train tracks, & RV spaces are stacked together like sardines. But sometimes a night at a KOA is necessary, and the welcoming staff makes it bearable.

    Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

    Typical Family-oriented Campground

We came here to Sheridan Wyoming in May 2021. Friendly people and camp was nearly full. Weather was windy and in the high 40’s in the daytime. The camp is very close to the highway and close to town. Easy to get to surrounding areas but you need a car. Our spot was near the pool but it was far too cold and not yet set up. The facilities were very clean and the showers we nice snd hot.I felt safe and comfortable. Very close to highway and train tracks so that you can easily hear both when sleeping (use ear plugs). Easy to get back on I-90 due to proximity of highway to camp. We were also charged an additional $11.00 upon check-in for reasons unexplained.

During summer months, temperatures range from 70-85°F during the day and can drop to 40°F at night. The region's limestone formations create distinctive camping environments with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the area.

What to do

Hiking trails exploration: Several miles of hiking paths wind through Bighorn National Forest, offering various difficulty levels and terrain types. "Nature at its finest. It was so so beautiful and secluded. There were other camp sights around but still very private and clean," notes a camper who visited the area.

Fishing opportunities: Fish for brook trout at Shell Reservoir Camping Area, which requires high-clearance 4x4 vehicles to access. "Beautiful campsites, brook trout fishing in the lake and the creek below, as well as a 4x4 trail that makes a large loop between shell reservoir and lake Adelaide," reports one visitor.

Wildlife observation: The region supports moose, deer, and various bird species. A camper at Island Park Campground mentions, "We were on our way to Yellowstone during a 10 day road trip through South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado and they insisted we stop and camp here at least one night. We had not even got our tent sat up and there they were [moose]!"

What campers like

Private, secluded sites: Many campgrounds offer well-spaced sites with natural barriers. At Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA, a camper noted, "Whether you are an RVer or a tent camper, there is plenty of space for you to enjoy this campground. We stayed on a rainy/snowy weekend in September in our 17-foot RV and found that even though we had neighbors, there was plenty of room to move."

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain modern restrooms and shower facilities. "This KOA is clean, has a friendly and positive active staff, sides are large enough for the coach, the tow, and additional chairs/tables. Every corner of the park is very well maintained and green," reports one camper about Buffalo KOA.

Nature trails: Many campsites feature walking paths through natural areas. A visitor at Deer Park RV Park and Campground appreciated "the nature trail near the front of the CG—about a half-mile loop—where we spotted several deer. A peaceful walk and a nice touch to the stay."

What you should know

Access limitations: Some camping areas require specific vehicles or have seasonal restrictions. A camper at Five Springs Falls Campground warns, "The big drawback for some will be the very narrow, extremely switchbacked and steep road up to the campground (no guardrails). A sign says no vehicles over 24' and I wouldn't want to do it with anything close to that!"

Weather preparedness: Mountain weather changes rapidly, requiring proper gear. "We came here to Sheridan Wyoming in May 2021. Weather was windy and in the high 40's in the daytime," reports one camper.

Reservation requirements: Glamping sites close to Wolf, Wyoming typically require advance booking, particularly during peak season from June through September. The Lazy R Campground, which offers glamping accommodations, advises, "They don't have a TON of spots, and they're popular so if you're looking to go this way... call ahead!"

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Several campgrounds offer specific features for children. "There is a pool and nice playground for the kids. Pet friendly," notes a camper at Sheridan KOA, while another mentions the availability of "a basketball court, horseshoe pits, mini golf, swimming pool, and some fun looking tricycles!"

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children particularly enjoy animal sightings around camp. "We were visited by a mother and baby moose," writes one visitor to the Bighorn National Forest.

Food options: Lazy R Campground features convenient on-site dining. "The campground has a cute bakery and store which you should have breakfast at and order their homemade biscuits," recommends a visitor, making it a convenient option for glamping close to Wolf, Wyoming.

Tips from RVers

Utility connections: Most RV sites provide full hookups with varying amperage options. "Our site had electric, water and sewer. Has dump station, laundry room, cable and wifi. Verizon 4G, 4 bars," notes a visitor to Buffalo KOA.

Site specifications: Sites vary in size and leveling requirements. At Island Park Campground, "Few sites are level. Fire pit needed cleaning. Toilets were clean," reports one RVer, providing practical insight for others planning to visit.

Seasonal considerations: Winter temperatures in the region can affect RV systems. For luxury glamping near Wolf, Wyoming during colder seasons, heated accommodations are essential.
