Chippewa NF Campground

Fishing and paddling draw most visitors to this US Forest Service campground set within Chequamegon National Forest, where a flowage lake sits at the edge of the loops and a fish cleaning house is available on site. Lakeside sites have a path leading directly to the water, and a boat ramp accommodates trailers, though the ramp is noted as shallow. Waterfront sites tend to fill first, so booking early makes sense for anyone who wants water access from camp.

The campground spreads across multiple loops, all heavily wooded, which means solar panels are not a practical option here. Sites are spaced apart with trees between them, and most are level enough that some campers skip leveling blocks entirely. Flush toilets and token-operated showers are available in several loops, and a dump station and potable water are on site. Electric and water hookups are available on some loops, while others, like the Hardwoods Loop, are non-electric. An ATV trail runs nearby, though campers report little noise from it even on weekends.

Road access comes with a rough-access warning, and one reviewer noted that tent worms can be a significant nuisance in early summer, dropping from the trees onto gear and furniture. Philip M. notes that "waterfront sites are usually full, but shallow boat ramp for trailers is close by." Group sites 52 and 53 exist but run strict rules on the number of vehicles per site. Campers planning a weekend stay in July can expect the campground to be well under capacity on weekdays. Reservations are available and worth making if a specific loop or hookup site matters.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, well-separated sites and clean facilities including flush toilets and showers. The heavily wooded setting provides good privacy and remains peaceful even on weekends.

Relax in the Woods

There are tons of sites across three loops, spaced apart with picnic tables, fire pits, and plenty of room. Most sites are level– we were only staying one night and didn’t even need to unhook our pickup. The lake is very close with a trail to a beach and dock. The bathrooms have flush toilets and showers. We didn’t have our ATVs with us, but the trails looked like narrow gravel roads. It wasn’t busy– on a Thursday in July only about¼ of the sites were taken. We had one bar on Verizon.

Clean campground

Sites are spread out with woods between the sites. Flush toilets with token operated showers. Waterfront sites are usually full, but shallow boat ramp for trailers is close by. Fishing pier and trails to get kayaks in the water are accessible from the main campgrounds. ATV trail close by but didn’t hear any even on the weekend.

Peaceful and Wooded

We stayed here for our annual family and friend camping event. We had group sites 52 and 53. The group sites are not much bigger than regular sites at many campgrounds I've been to. They are also very picky about the number of "wheels" on each site. This is specified on the rules when you reserve and they aren't kidding. There is a campground host on each loop. We were on the Hardwoods Loop which did not have electricity but several other loops did. Our sites were lake side so it was nice to have a path to walk down to get to the boats right there.

All sites are heavily wooded in all the loops so solar is not a good option here. The fish cleaning house is nice and there were many pan fish caught by our group. There is lots of room between most sites and lots of wooded area between our site and the lake. There are very few houses on this flowage as it primarily belongs to the national forest. There is a bar nearby that sells very expensive ice and has a small bait shop but we didn't mind supporting the locals.

There is a dump station here and potable water available. Flush toilet  and shower buildings on several loops but No Soap or hand dryer. The Feds are all worried about COVID but you don't get soap and when we left it in the bathroom for our use, the rangers threw it away! Go figure! All in all a good place

There were dumpsters here for garbage as well as recycling so please save your plastic, glass and cans to place into the recycle bin

Tent worms!

This memorial weekend was horrible! Tent worms had infested the campground! Dropping from the trees and landing on you and all your belongings! Had picnic tables fully cobwebbed. Grass wasn’t mowed, was told that they mowed beginning of season! Playground was wet and with high grass!

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Chippewa Campground in Wisconsin?

Chippewa Campground offers a variety of amenities for campers. The campground features flush toilets and token-operated showers in the bathhouses. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are three separate camping loops with numerous sites, including some group sites (like sites 52 and 53). The campground provides access to a nearby lake with a fishing pier, boat ramp, and trails for launching kayaks. There's also a playground for children and access to ATV trails in the vicinity.

Are there photos available of Chippewa Campground?

Yes, photos of Chippewa Campground are available online. These images typically showcase the spacious campsites set among wooded areas, the lake access points, fishing pier, and recreational facilities. Photos would help visualize the campground's layout with its three loops, picnic areas, fire pits, and the natural surroundings. Check the official Forest Service website or camping platforms for current visual references of the campground.

What do visitor reviews say about Chippewa Campground?

Chippewa Campground receives mixed feedback. Many campers appreciate the spacious sites that are spread out with wooded areas between them for privacy. The clean bathrooms and showers are frequently praised. Visitors enjoy the waterfront access, fishing pier, and trails for kayak launching. The group sites work well for family gatherings, though some note they have strict limits on vehicles per site. Some visitors have experienced maintenance issues during peak times, including unmowed grass and seasonal pest problems. Overall, the campground seems best suited for those who value privacy, water access, and basic amenities.

How close is Chippewa Campground to the Chippewa River?

The campground is located very close to a lake, not directly on the Chippewa River. From the camping area, there are trails that lead directly to the water, making it easily accessible for campers. The lake features a fishing pier, a shallow boat ramp suitable for trailers, and multiple access points for launching kayaks and canoes. Waterfront sites are available but tend to fill up quickly due to their popularity.
