    Big Eau Pleine Park Campground

This park offers 12 miles of trails, scenic beauty, wooded sites and more!

This gorgeous county park in Marathon County, Wisconsin is 1,450 acres of mixed hardwoods forming a two-mile peninsula jutting out deep into the waters of the Big Eau Pleine Flowage.

Eau Pleine is from the French phrase meaning full water or stock river. There are two separate campgrounds–( the West Unit and the South Unit) with a total of 106 sites– about 60 with electric. The daily fee ranges from$18.00 for a non-electric, with no lake view to$23.00 for lake view with electric.

You can hike, bike, or ride your horse on the 12 miles of scenic, wooded trails. The park also offers several fishing points near the entrance and along the three boat landings. There is also a beach, two shelters and scattered picnic areas. And you can enjoy a fun game of disc golf on the scenic wooded course.

We found this park to be absolutely beautiful and definitely give it a double Hell Yeah!!

    Hartman Creek State Park Campground

    Beautiful

We camped in the family campground with our 17 foot Casita travel trailer. Large private site surrounded by trees, with several options for positioning the trailer. The nearby chain of small lakes connected by narrows is ideal for kayaking. Lots of level paved roads for cycling, and wooded trails for hiking. Clean restrooms with showers.

    Hartman Creek State Park Campground

Hartman Creek State Park- gorgeous & family friendly.

A gorgeous family friendly campground! Our site was located overlooking Allen Lake, right in the tall pines. It was a great location, enough trees for kids to hang hammocks for a little relaxation.

Bathrooms with showers available and in good condition. Pit toilets located nearby as well.

Allen Lake has a fishing pier that the kids loved fishing from. Good catches early in the morning!

Hartman Creek is a nice small lake, with no wake. There is now a rental building available with kayaks, paddle boats, SUP, etc to rent. We rented kayaks for an hour and a very reasonable price. Small lake so we were able to explore— saw about 3 dozen turtles which was super fun for the kids.

There are hiking trails available and also paved trails for bike riding, walking, etc.

We loved the quietness at night. Not entirely sure, but I believe there is a quite policy after 10pm. Gorgeous to look up and see the amazing stars at night.

I went here all the time as a kid and this was my first time back taking kids. We will be back again!

Guide to Wausau

Marathon County offers several camping options for horse owners and riders near Wausau, Wisconsin. Located in the central part of the state at approximately 1,200 feet elevation, this region features a mix of hardwood forests, rivers, and flowages that create diverse terrain for equestrian activities. Water quality in lakes and flowages can vary seasonally with algae issues more common during summer months.

What to do

Trail riding year-round: The Underdown Campground in Lincoln County provides access to primitive camping near multiple small lakes. "It's as primitive as can be. Very ample space except near the water. Multiple small lakes around the area. Can set up camp anywhere but the road really," notes Wade W.

Swimming in natural settings: The Marathon County Dells of the Eau Claire Park features unique rock formations and mini waterfalls along the Eau Claire River. "The most epic part of the place is the Eau Claire river with the rocks and mini water falls. Spring time the water is usually high and the breakup of ice happens it's amazing to see," writes Raechel S.

ATV riding: Several sites connect to designated ATV trails where riders can travel through wooded terrain. "You can bring your ATV to ride on the ATV track there or on the trails in the woods. We seen deer while riding through the trails," explains Matthew J. about Embarrass River Campground.

What campers like

Accessible handicap sites: Big Eau Pleine Park offers designated accessible camping options. "I stay on the handicapped site. It's big it's level near the bathroom which is a big plus LOL. The whole campgrounds very very nice," reports Debra in her review.

Spacious camping areas: The Embarrass River Campground and ATV Park features large, secluded sites with shade. "Big secluded sites. Plenty of shade. My favorite sites are on the river as its relaxing and comforting listening to the fast moving stream especially at night," shares Matthew J.

Waterfront views: Multiple campers mention the calming effects of staying near water. "I love this campgrounds. Big mature forest with water access, boat launches, swimming, fishing. Camping sites are very nice and level w majority elec," writes Walter W. about his experience at Big Eau Pleine Park.

What you should know

Water quality concerns: Several flowages in the region experience seasonal algae issues. "The water quality suffers from green algae almost the entire season. Fishing can be good. No longer good for nocturnal carp due to water," notes Lori S. about Big Eau Pleine Park Campground.

Bathroom facilities vary: Most parks offer basic restrooms but amenities differ widely. "Good grounds but there was no water to get and like one other no lights in bathroom," reports Jenny B. about facilities at one location.

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds near Wausau require advance booking, especially for equestrian camping facilities. Group sites often fill quickly during peak season from May through September.

Tips for camping with families

Our site was located overlooking Allen Lake, right in the tall pines. It was a great location, enough trees for kids to hang hammocks for a little relaxation," shares Jen E. about Hartman Creek State Park Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Several parks offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Lots of wildlife. Kids will love it. We stayed from Sunday thru Wednesday. Very quiet and clean," notes Walter W. about his family's experience.

Very friendly atmosphere and more comfortable sized sites than we expected considering what we typically look for," shares Glenn T. about Lakeside Fire Campground.
