Best Campgrounds near Rothschild, WI

The central Wisconsin region surrounding Rothschild features numerous county and state park campgrounds situated along rivers and lakes, with most facilities operating seasonally from May through October. Big Eau Pleine Park Campground, located on a peninsula jutting into the Big Eau Pleine Flowage about 20 miles west of Rothschild, offers 106 sites with both electric and non-electric options. Council Grounds State Park near Merrill provides year-round camping with wooded sites along the Wisconsin River. Closer to town, Marathon Park in Wausau offers urban camping with convenient access to city amenities but less seclusion. Most campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, with some locations like Jordan Park featuring specialty sites such as walk-in island camping for those seeking more privacy.

Camping reservations are essential during the peak summer season, particularly for weekends and holidays when waterfront sites fill quickly. Most campgrounds in the area require advance booking through county or state reservation systems, with fees typically ranging from $18-30 per night depending on amenities and location. "The campsites were clean and spacious, we had enough room in our site for a tent, screen tent, and a boat," noted one visitor to Council Grounds State Park. Weather conditions remain relatively predictable from June through August, though occasional thunderstorms can occur. The region experiences significant seasonal changes, with most campgrounds closing by late October due to colder temperatures. Insects, particularly mosquitoes and deer flies, can be prevalent near water during summer months, as mentioned in reviews of riverside sites.

Water access represents a defining feature of camping in the Rothschild area, with many campgrounds situated on rivers or lakes that support fishing, kayaking, and swimming. The Wisconsin River flows through the region, with several campgrounds including Dubay Park offering riverfront sites arranged in loops. "On the Wisconsin River, there are four loops of campsites, with some on the river side of the road and some off the river," explains one camper. Wooded sites with mature trees provide shade and privacy at many locations, though site spacing varies considerably between campgrounds. Families particularly appreciate the beaches, playgrounds, and water recreation opportunities available at parks like Council Grounds and Jordan Park. Hiking trails, including segments of the Ice Age Trail, connect with several campgrounds, allowing for day hikes directly from campsites.

    On The Rocks Family Kampground

    Do not recommend

Check yourself in and don’t expect to be welcomed by staff. Restrooms are filthy. Office, restaurant and bar only open Thursday through Saturday. When we messaged to ask when the restrooms will be cleaned, it took 2 days and a phone call to respond. Of you like customer service and clean facilities, this is not for you. There are more campgrounds to choose from in the area.

    Hartman Creek State Park Campground

    Good spot

Pretty full, but also pretty quiet place. Clean bathrooms with showers. Most sites don’t have hookups. There’s an upcharge for out-of-staters. Easy access to trails, lakes, and a short jaunt to beautiful downtown Waupaca. Would stay again!

    Council Grounds State Park Campground

    Nice for a group

This was our first camping trip as a group with 12 people and 4 cars in July 2023.

Biggest con was how open/unshaded our site was. We didn’t mind but didn’t love being as close to the other group sites as well.

We enjoyed being able to rent kayaks and paddleboards and relax on the beach. We also liked the proximity to the pit/vault toilet and water pump.

Probably won’t return as a group but had a great time!

Dells of the Eau Claire Park Campground

    Great place

Great place, pretty trails. This campground just put in a dump station this year which also includes portable water to fill up your tank. Our site is connected to another site so we made sure to get both sites with friends and it worked out great. Couldn't swim due to a high bacteria in the water. No reception for verizon users. Tmoblie had a bar but spotty.

    Sara Park

Pretty nice for a first trip

It’s a small campground just 10 sites along a road but the back of each site has a small clearing to the water, there is a boat launch down the road which we utilized. Overall very nice campground for a first trip. very affordable.

    Medford City Park

    It’s a city campground

It’s small but the sites are nice with electric and water. A police officer even held traffic at bay and guided me into the site.

    Dexter Park

    Absolutely loved this campsite

Dexter Campgrounds was a delight to stay at. There was a private bathroom/shower room that made the experience feel luxurious. It is right next to a beautiful river and lake. Very quiet and campers are very respectful. I would absolutely recommend this spot. It was $36 for one night. They also have a place to do laundry. They have camp sites that accommodate electricity as well!

    Dorchester Park & Campground

    Great spot!

Great little city park in the town of Dorchester Wisconsin. We're just doing a quick overnight but we have 30 Amp and water hookups. Also, we scored a pull thru! All for just $22/ night! ($25 for full hookups)

    Great Northern Campground

Mostly Nice, but Weird Fee Structure

Roads leading to camp sites are narrow and can be muddy in the rain. The site we had was extremely unlevel and had a low spot that filled up with water/mud in the rain. You only can use the dump station once at check out or you can pay a fee, but none of the sites have sewer. Also, there is a per minute fee for their two showers, but no worries it is Luke warm water at best. The pond was nice, but on the small side.
