Best RV Parks & Resorts near Ogema, WI

Several RV campgrounds operate within 30 miles of Ogema, Wisconsin, providing various hookup options for motorhome travelers. Thornapple River Campground and RV Park offers electric hookups and sanitary dump facilities, operating from May through October. Chippewa NF Campground features electric hookups with fifty-amp service and accommodates larger vehicles with big-rig friendly sites. Council Grounds State Park Campground provides electric sites with thirty-amp hookups, sewer connections, and water access for RVs. Sites at most parks feature gravel pads, though some lakeside spots at Chippewa offer concrete pull-through rv pads with additional space for parking. "Sites are large and there's plenty of separation. We had a picnic table and another taller table. All sites have electric but the fee is reasonable."

Seasonal availability varies significantly across the region, with most parks operating from May through mid-October. Full hookup RV sites tend to fill quickly during summer weekends and fall color season, making advance reservations essential. Cell service fluctuates throughout the area—Verizon coverage is generally reliable at Council Grounds and Chapman Park, while more remote forest campgrounds may have limited connectivity. Dump stations are available at several locations including Thornapple River and Chapman Park Campground. Many parks accommodate pets with specific restrictions, though Tomahawk Campground notably prohibits animals. Motorhome sites at national forest campgrounds typically offer more privacy and shade compared to private RV parks, but with fewer amenities. Winter camping options are extremely limited, with most facilities closing after the first significant snowfall.

    Sailor Lake NF Campground

Spacious sites in the Wisconsin woods

Nestled within Wisconsin forest you find Sailor Lake. This national forest campground has water access as well as sites away from the lake. We stayed at site 12 - a pull through site away from the water.

Many, although not all, of the waterside sites are for tents. You park and carry your gear down a few steps for a close to the water feel. There is an open area for everyone to enjoy the lake - it’s filled with purple flowers today. With plenty of woods around, all sites offer privacy but they have different vibes. Plenty of choice here so look around or reserve one. Plenty of sites available for walk-ins too. A couple of vault toilets, garage receptacle and water source round out a nice camp.

ATV trails as well as non-motorized trails are plentiful. We hiked on them and it was nice. Minimal cell signal encourages disconnecting for your stay.

    Indian Shores

Indian Shores - a worthy desination in Wisconsin’s Northwoods

This is a larger campground with a good mix of seasonal and weekend campsites. The majority of the weekend campsites are located near the prime activity locations; the pool, playground and lake areas. There are full sun and full shade sites available. The Shady sites are amongst the evergreens, so they tend to be sandier. The full sun sites are all grass. All of the sites have a gravel pad to park on; the exception to this are the lakeside sites which are concrete pads. There is a camp store and a good sized bar & grill. The weekend we were here it rained non-stop, so we did not get to use any of the available canoe/kayak/fishing boat/pontoon boat rentals. We did make ample use of the mini-golf, playground, and heated swimming pool though. The pool was warm enough that even the non-stop rain did not cool it down enough to be uncomfortable. The seasonal campers I met and talked with were all friendly and did not have the “why are you here” attitude I occasionally come across when staying at seasonal heavy resorts. I did see several people fishing in the rain and pulling keepers out of the lake to be cleaned and cooked. They were fishing from the docks. Our kids are 7 & 10 and they were never bored. There were a couple trails within the campground that were good for nature hikes. If it were a little closer to home, this campground would be on the shortlist of places to have a seasonal site at.

    Patricia Lake Campground

    Mostly Seasonal Campers

This is our second stay, once in 2020 and now 2023. Both times were just for a couple nights. Great location to explore Minocqua. The campground is comprised mostly of seasonal folks, but offers 20 some sights to non-seasonal. Sites are relatively spaced apart for a private campground and offer FHU’s for those needing to stay a night or two to dump tanks, etc. A bit pricey, but if you spend most of your time boondocking it’s a good fit. Good Verizon signal and they have cable TV hookup.

Connors Lake Campground — Flambeau River State Forest

Great Canoe and Backwoods Place– Maybe Not the Place for Families

The State Forest is very beautiful. There is a lake as well as the Flambeau River to explore. There are two campgrounds, Lake of the Pines which has 30 non-electric sites and Connor Lake which has 3 electric sites and 26 non-electric. All sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. There are no play grounds. There are only vault toilets at the campground. There is one shower at the ranger station which is about 4 miles away. There is no cell service at Connors Lake Campground. I could not even make an emergency call which was a concern for me. There are many signs that say to go to the ranger station, about 4 miles to make an emergency call. There is no weather safe shelter at the campground. There are 14 canoe camp areas and the park is beautiful. If you like to canoe this is a great park. We did a hike and cut our stay short since we like a bit more services and safety.

Firefly Lake — Northern Highland State Forest

Beautiful quiet campground in state forest near Minocqua, WI

Very nice campground in state forest in northern Wisconsin. NO electricity. Generators allowed from 10 am to 5 pm.  There are multiple paved bike trails and groomed hiking trails and other lakes in the area. Woodruff and Minocqua are nearby. The lake is clear, sandy with many areas where you can swim. No electric motors on lake so it is nice for kayaking.  All the sites are large and surrounded by trees, shady.   Clean showers and bathrooms with water as well as several pit toilets. Dump and clean water available at next campground, Crystal Lake, which is a mile away.

There are MANY other campgrounds in the Northern Highlands state forest but this is the ONLY one with showers available.  Cell phone service is minimal with Verizon.  We could send and receive texts.

    West Bay Camping Resort

    Quiet woods

Located down a quiet paved road just 2 miles outside of town. You are close to the action but dont have to listen to it.

Some sites are tight/close and others you could turn around in. Most are fairly level or it doesnt take much to make your camper level. Very little grass at site but you get a picnik table and a fire pit. Wood must be bought at the store but pay attention to the hours as they close early. Plenty of mosquitoes but you are in the woods. Daytime they arent too bad.

    Bathrooms were very clean.

Full hookups, no wifi or at least we couldnt find it. Dogs are welcomed , no barking allowed. Cell phone service was good so you can work if you have too. AT&T and Verizon.

Passport America discount honored for 7 days and Coast to Coast.

Plenty of rules but we will have this on our return list.

Guide to Ogema

Camping options near Ogema, Wisconsin include several national forest campgrounds and county parks within a 35-mile radius. Situated in the northwoods region at approximately 1,500 feet elevation, the area experiences warm summers with occasional heavy rainfall and cold winters with significant snowfall. Most campgrounds in this region remain open from May through October, with limited winter accommodations available at private rv parks Ogema, Wisconsin and surrounding communities.

What to do

Hiking trails: The Eastwood NF Campground offers direct access to the Ice Age Trail. "We stayed 3 nights at site number 9 in the midst of the pandemic. Our site had a wooded trail down to the flowage and onto the Mondeaux Esker Trail segment of the Ice Age Trail. The Mondeaux Esker segment was challenging (muddy) but fun," reports one camper.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes and rivers provide excellent fishing within 30 minutes of Ogema. A visitor to Spearhead Point notes, "The fishing is great- lots of bluegill!! Will catch on almost every throw! Great for taking kids fishing. You get a pier at your campsite to tie your boat up at."

Water recreation: Swimming and boating are popular activities at several campgrounds. "The Thorneapple River is a sleepy, winding river. There are campsites right on the river. You can float or wade in it; it's shallow and refreshing," according to a visitor at Thornapple River Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Many campsites offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. Deer sightings are common at Moen Lake Campground, where one camper noted, "If you want a quiet, secluded campground where you can just sit back and enjoy being out in the woods (we had deer walk through the back of our campsite at night), then you will enjoy this campground."

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds feature wooded separation between campsites. At Chippewa NF Campground, "Sites are spread out with woods between the sites. Flush toilets with token operated showers. Waterfront sites are usually full, but shallow boat ramp for trailers is close by."

Dark skies for stargazing: The limited light pollution makes for excellent night sky viewing. "Dark and quiet at night. Sites are well spread out, you barely notice there are other sites nearby," notes a camper at Eastwood NF Campground.

Clean facilities: Several parks maintain well-kept restrooms and shower facilities. A visitor to Chapman Park Campground shared, "The bathrooms were clean and well kept as were the grounds generally. If you wanted to have a large event like a family reunion here, there is plenty of space without having to worry about overcrowding."

Lake access: Waterfront sites are highly valued but book quickly. "We pulled in on a Sunday night and all but had the place to ourselves. Our site was on a small, beautiful lake and close to the bathrooms. We had a slight breeze and very few bugs," according to a Chapman Park Campground visitor.

What you should know

Water availability concerns: Water access can be limited at some locations. At Eastwood NF Campground, "One drawback was the water at the campground is shut off due to bad water tests. Plan ahead - there is a glacial spring within driving distance and other federal campgrounds that you might be able to get water from."

Seasonal pest issues: Tent worms and mosquitoes can be problematic during certain periods. A Chippewa NF Campground reviewer warned, "This memorial weekend was horrible! Tent worms had infested the campground! Dropping from the trees and landing on you and all your belongings!"

Campsite spacing varies: Site privacy differs significantly between campgrounds. At Council Grounds State Park Campground, "Sites are wooded and well spaced out, and there were a couple of trails that went from the campground to the beach, boat ramps, or in the opposite direction, just nice walking/hiking trails."

Limited services: Some campgrounds offer minimal amenities. A Moen Lake Campground visitor explained, "If you are looking for something with tons of amenities, look elsewhere. The basic amenities are here, picnic table, fire pit, bath house with showers within walking distance, electrical(30amp) and water hookups, but don't expect them to be 5 star quality."

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Several parks offer swimming areas ideal for children. Council Grounds State Park has "a small beach area. Beautiful hiking trails, but watch out for the biting deer flies as the sun goes down! Three kids got attacked in one of the trails and had huge welts and lots of tears."

Kid-friendly fishing spots: Lakes with abundant panfish provide entertainment for young anglers. Chapman Park Campground offers "nice showers in a great park" and "good fishing," making it suitable for families with children.

Playground availability: Some parks include play equipment for children. Chapman Park features "a lighted park for kids to play at night and plenty of fishing," according to a recent visitor.

Group camping options: For family reunions or larger gatherings, Council Grounds State Park offers dedicated group sites. "For this particular trip, we reserved group sites A and B. They each have concrete pads for 3 campers and TONS of space to spread out and/or set up tents."

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Most rv parks near Ogema, Wisconsin offer only partial hookups. At Moen Lake Campground, expect "electrical(30amp) and water hookups" with "no onsite sewer, but did have a dump station."

Site leveling: Campsite terrain varies across the region. At Eastwood NF Campground, "Our site was large though not real flat. We fit a car, suv and 17 ft boat."

Overnight options: For those traveling through the area, Chapman Park provides convenient accommodations. "We pulled in on Saturday over Labor Day weekend and the campground is only half full so this is a great spot for those folks just passing by. Guaranteed to have an opening."

RV size considerations: Some campgrounds can accommodate larger vehicles while others have restrictions. Chippewa NF Campground offers big-rig friendly sites where "we were only staying one night and didn't even need to unhook our pickup. The lake is very close with a trail to a beach and dock."
