Equestrian campgrounds near Nelson, Wisconsin offer trail riders access to shaded woodland paths with diverse terrain. The region's bluff country topography creates varied riding conditions with elevation changes between 600-1200 feet. Most horse campgrounds in this area operate from April through October, with trail conditions best during late spring and early fall when temperatures average 65-75°F.
What to do
Trail riding with horses: Zumbro Bottoms West provides dedicated equestrian camping with trail access into the Zumbro River valley. "Nice camping for going on the horse/hiking trails in the Zumbro River valley. Many large sites equipped for the equestrians whom need space for horses and equipment," notes Crystal B.
Kayaking and canoeing: The region's rivers offer paddling opportunities for all skill levels. At Highland Ridge - Eau Galle Reservoir, campers can enjoy water recreation. "Great for hiking and kayaking/canoeing is near by," says David E., while another camper mentions the "plenty of wildlife" visible from the water.
Hiking local trails: The wooded terrain provides scenic hiking options. "Nice walking trails were nice but recommend pants as the grass was long in spots. Plenty of wildlife and could not hear the cars from the highway," writes Justin S. about Pietrek County Park.
What campers like
Quiet, wooded settings: Many equestrian campgrounds offer secluded sites away from urban noise. "The campground is down a minimum maintenance road, but the road is pretty good though. Just one circle with 17 sites. There are many miles of horse and hiking trails in the area," notes Crystal B. about Zumbro Bottoms Central.
Minimal insects: Unlike some camping areas, several campgrounds report low bug populations. "Large open sites and NO mosquitos!!!! Will be back with our group again," reports Bill H. about Haycreek Valley Campground.
Family-friendly amenities: Chester Woods Park offers recreational options beyond horseback riding. "The campground is very clean and nice. The bathrooms and showers were pristine clean and close and easy to walk to. The beach was great and clean. Fishing was great," says Erik O.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most equestrian campgrounds operate from April through October. "Highland Ridge Campground" has a season from "Apr 1 - Nov 30," while Chester Woods Park runs from "3rd weekend May to 2nd weekend October."
Site limitations: Some campgrounds have specific site constraints. "Many sites are placed on an incline. They got the sites are pretty flat, but it's still on a hill. Not a whole lot to do at the campground. Trails are in poor shape," John W. cautions about Highland Ridge.
Facility variations: Money Creek & Vinegar Ridge offers primitive camping for equestrians. "There are 8 sites. There is no water or electricity. One pit toilet for the site. 5 miles from Rushford MN. Access to Root River trail close by," explains Scott S.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with facilities for children. At Highland Ridge, "There is also a nice, modern playground," as noted by Lee D., adding that there was "an interpretive center, but it was locked when we were there."
Swimming options: Water recreation provides family entertainment. "This park is a county park just east of Rochester, MN. It has a campground and man-made lake (created when Bear Creek was dammed for a flood control project) with hiking trails, a horse trail, picnic shelters, a beach, and a playground," explains Brian K. about Chester Woods Park.
Budget-friendly firewood: "Clean bathrooms and showers. Best value I've seen for fire wood," shares Mark N. about Chester Woods Park, noting its affordability for family camping needs.
Tips from RVers
Electric hookup considerations: Many horse campgrounds offer limited hookups. "Only electric hooks ups at each site. They do have a fresh water filling station and a dump station. Well worth the $30 per night charge," says Kirk J. about Chester Woods Park.
Site selection for large rigs: Choose sites carefully when bringing large RVs. "Some sites on the short loop (28-38) are a bit smaller and slope down from the road, so be careful of the site's size when booking. Our 29' trailer would have been a challenging fit in some of those sites," advises Deb M.
GPS navigation tips: "Make sure to enter 'Highland Ridge Campground' into your GPS instead of 'Eau Galle Rec Area. (That's the day use area of the park that's about a 20 minute drive around the lake from the campground)," suggests Deb M., helping RVers avoid navigation confusion.
