Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

    An amazing experience!

This was our second time to this park and we stayed in one of the Yurts on the edge of the Union Bay Campground. Inside the yurt there are 2 bunk beds and a wood burning stove, along with a small table and chairs I believe. Outside there is a picnic table and fire ring - since we came at the end of the winter season, the campground provided some wood for us upon arrival. There is a food storage container outside as well so no bears try to break into your yurt.

We stayed at the end of April/beginning of May so the campground itself was not open meaning now access to water or restroom facilities which was okay for us. Additionally we were unable to drive all the way up to the yurt like you would in the summer time. We had to park outside the campground and walk across the entire thing with our stuff - we took 2-3 trips as we didn’t plan for this and packed as though we were car camping. The yurts are a great experience and perfect for a weekend away with friends.

The views of superior are amazing and just below the yurt you have access to the shoreline which is great to watch the sunsets on. Porcupine Mountain offers many trails, many of them longer backcountry trails, and some easier ones as well. It is a great park that I always love coming to!

Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

    Beautiful family campground

Beautiful family campground on the North ashore of Lake Superior. It has RV, tent and back country sites as well as cabins and yurts for rent. Many amazing hiking trails and beautiful waterfalls to explore near by. Campground has large clean bathrooms and showers and a nice camp store. It is also pet friendly and has WiFi,  but no playground.  We stayed at site 82 which had a partial view of the lake and backed the tree line. It was a nice site. I gave this campground 4 out of 5 stars because some of the sites were a little too close together but overall a great campground and we will be back!

    Bewabic State Park Campground

    Semi Private Campsites

Campground was well maintained. When we arrived there was no one working the check in station however we were able to use the phone provided and get checked in to our site. Campground is on a lake and there is a nice hiking trail around the island. The site we stayed in was surrounded by trees giving us some privacy. The only thing I was not satisfied with was the fact that the bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke, there was however a no smoking sign posted.

    Paint River Hills Campground

Quiet campground right by town and ORV trails.

Great little campground. It's small, clean and quiet. You self register for check-in, there's a bathroom building with 3 stalls and two showers(women) and hot water. We purchased an RV site($20) even though we were camping in a tent so our truck and trailer would fit and it comes with water and electricity at the camp site. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and fire ring. The ORV Route is right outside the campground entrance and you can ride to the trail. You can also get ice and gas at the gas station in town by taking the alley. We stayed again in 2020 in Our RV. They have 4 pull through sites with full hook-ups;$25 a night. 50/20 amps, high water pressure.

    Lost Lake Cabins

Cabins only at this location but just down the road is a campground

The road in to the cabin campground is beautiful. Tall trees stand guard as you enter an even more peaceful area than the forest you were driving through.

There is a communal parking area with a few of the cabins in sight. You can reserve the cabins individually or get several for your family or group. You can see some recreation areas near the parking area.

The Lost Lake Campground is just down the road. This has a larger beach and boat launch. The lake is perfect for fishing. There are also several short trails and longer ones nearby.

Drive a bit further than Lost Lake Campground to Chipmunk Rapids Campground. There you will find a wonderful artesian well where you can fill up on great drinking water.

    Hi-Pines Campground

Wide open space great if you have kids!

This campground is wide and very open. We arrived on a Sunday and the weekend crowd had cleared out, so nice and quiet. One thing is— do not plan on doing laundry on a Monday. The personnel use all the machines to wash linens and towels from the cabins after folks check out. One dryer did not heat very well. The entry to the laundry is a step up and I stubbed my toe because the threshold was not secured.

Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Beautiful park with easy access to Lake Superior

This was our first time camping in Michigan and we loved being so close to Lake Superior. We're used to MN state parks, so we found the campsites in MI to be a bit small and too close to each other. The fire ring for the site behind ours was very close to the bed area of our camper. Our spot was campsite #98. There's not a lot of shade or vegetation between campsites in that row, but it was easy walking distance to the modern restroom/showers and Lake Superior. Next time we would like to camp along the lake. The trail around Lake of the Clouds was well worth it!

Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Mountains in Michigan? And, on the shores of Lake Superior? Amazing!

Union Bay is the only “modern” campground in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, offering around 100 fully-reservable, electric sites with access to a modern bathroom and shower house. The lakeside sites, as you can imagine, are the most popular and spacious, and most often booked 6 months in advance.  If you come after leaf season, you can have the place to yourself.  However, the winds off the lake can be powerful and the numerous campsites on the upper level offer a bit more protection, if somewhat more cramped.

The boat launch is right next to the campground, if you plan to get out onto the big lake. The outdoor adventure opportunities in the park are endless, from hiking, biking, and paddling in the spring through the fall to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.   But, bring your muck boots if you come in the fall or spring, as the trails and campground is wet and full of mud.

As a designated wilderness, motorized recreation is not allowed within the park, so your walk in the woods remains undisturbed. Backpacking is very popular here and backcountry camping sites are numerous, and reservable (get your permit at the Visitor’s Center). The park offers cabins and yurts, some of which are only accessible by trail which and heated by a wood stove making a winter adventure more attractive. There is also a downhill skiing area located within 3 miles of the Visitors Center.

The bathrooms at Union Bay are modern and comfortable with individual unisex shower units accessible via an outside door. The laundry room has 1 washing machine and 2 dryers(be sure to run the dryer on high). Water is available at several spigots throughout the campground, and the sewer dump station is right on the way out of the campsite to take care of that business when you leave.

Be sure to drive or hike up to the Lake of the Clouds overlook and trail network. The glacially carved escarpment offers a priceless view of what the locals call “the Porkies” and makes the long drive to get here worth it.

The closest town of significance to Union Bay is Ontonagon, 18 miles away, so plan ahead with supplies. Just outside the campground is a small, privately run, campstore where you can get ice cream, ice and a few other food items, and lots of tourist trinkets – just look for the oversized black bear.

Guide to Land o Lakes

Cabin camping options near Land o Lakes, Wisconsin center around the 28 lakes that make up the region's namesake chain. The area sits at an elevation of about 1,700 feet within the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. Winter temperatures regularly drop below zero from December through February, while summer highs typically reach the mid-70s to low 80s. Most camping cabins in the area operate seasonally from May through October due to the harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Chain O'Lakes Campground offers direct access to multiple connected lakes. "Lovely campground near the lakes. Tons of lake activities like renting boats to fish (like we did). Our campground was next to nice bathrooms and a sand volleyball court," notes one visitor at Chain O'Lakes Campground.

Waterfall visits: Located about 45 minutes from Land o Lakes, Bond Falls provides scenic day trip options. "Bond Falls is a very short walk from the car, with longer hiking opportunities nearby. I visited the falls in the wintertime when some of it was frozen, and the ground covered in snow. Very pretty that time of the year," shares a visitor to Bond Falls Campground.

Swimming and boating: Many cabin locations include beach access for summer recreation. At Lake Gogebic State Park, "The beach area was nice with a nice big sandy beach for the kids. The Porcupine Mtns were a 30 minute drive north and we had a great time there," according to one camper.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Some cabins provide more seclusion than others. "This place has a variety of options. We loved the rustic sites that were furthest from the sign-in building. You feel 'out in the wilderness' but close enough to town. The sites are spread apart nicely with plenty of privacy," notes a visitor at Bond Falls Campground.

Cabin quality: Rental cabins vary considerably in terms of amenities. A visitor at Hi-Pines Campground shared, "We stayed in a rental trailer here and were very impressed! There is a good mix of open and wooded sites. The weekends it gets busy, but the sites are for the most part spaced well enough apart that you don't feel packed in."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness rates highly among cabin campers. At Bewabic State Park Campground, a camper noted, "There are pit toilets close to the sites and flush toilets with showers that are centrally located. Very clean. Beach area is very nice."

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most cabin facilities close during winter months. "We had a site in the shade, directly on the lake. There were quite a few muddy spots at our & surrounding sites due to a lot of recent rain. We had to move our car to the parking lot to avoid getting stuck," reported a visitor at Lake Gogebic State Park.

Bug preparation: Insects can be intense during certain periods. One Bond Falls camper warned, "Mosquitoes and flies were so bad that our dogs faces were getting bloody and bug spray and a fire did nothing for us. We packed up and canceled our whole trip after that... it would be a great place in the fall when the bugs aren't so bad."

Laundry limitations: Some campgrounds have restricted laundry access. At Hi-Pines Campground, one visitor advised, "Nice and quiet. One thing is— do not plan on doing laundry on a Monday. The personnel use all the machines to wash linens and towels from the cabins after folks check out."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Many campgrounds provide recreation options for children. "This campground is very clean and nice with tons of things to do! The sites are nice and big and the pond has inflatables that are very fun," shared a visitor at Hi-Pines Campground.

Educational opportunities: Some locations offer learning experiences. A Bond Falls visitor mentioned, "The trail system is fabulous and some trails are handicap accessible. The pit toilet is pretty gross, only downside. I highly recommend camping here!"

Swimming areas: Designated swimming spots provide safer water recreation. At Indian Shores, a camper noted, "The weekend we were here it rained non-stop, so we did not get to use any of the available canoe/kayak/fishing boat/pontoon boat rentals. We did make ample use of the mini-golf, playground, and heated swimming pool though."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose level sites when possible. At Arbor Vitae Campground, a visitor observed, "Clean bathrooms and shower areas. Easy hook up for water, electric and sewer. RV sites nice but would prefer more trees. Nice fire pits. Wood available for purchase."

Utility connections: Quality of hookups varies between campgrounds. A camper at Peaceful Pines Resort shared, "Wonderful RV Resort! Brand New and Wow what a Bathhouse! The lake is right there steps away that is crystal clear and sandy bottom!!"

Storage considerations: Plan for limited storage space in cabin rentals. Bewabic State Park Campground visitors noted, "There is a dump station there. It was quiet at night and dark and you could see the stars!"
