    Bewabic State Park Campground

    Semi Private Campsites

Campground was well maintained. When we arrived there was no one working the check in station however we were able to use the phone provided and get checked in to our site. Campground is on a lake and there is a nice hiking trail around the island. The site we stayed in was surrounded by trees giving us some privacy. The only thing I was not satisfied with was the fact that the bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke, there was however a no smoking sign posted.

    J.W. Wells State Park Campground

    Parking lot by the lake

Stayed for 5 nights. The third party computerized reservation system gave our site to someone else. Fortunately, we were put into a first-come first-served campsite right on the water which is a major upgrade. All of the sites (except for a few paved handicapped sites) are grass. Perimeter sites can be muddy. Interior sites can have enough slope that the trailer A-frame is on the ground in order to level. Electricity is reliable. Restrooms are immaculate. Showers are nice. Dump station with fresh water is clean and works well (2 bay).

My main complaint is a common, almost universal complain - people are right on top of one another. We have a truck camper 6 feet from our screen room with its AC on high and a very "fun" family sitting right outside our trailer on the other side. The "infield" is much worse - seems like each site has multiple vehicles and space is so tight that they are stacking kayaks. Family groups with clustered sites. Seems like a kennel as well with dogs everywhere. On the plus side: very little music being played, people were respectful, dogs well behaved for the most part without unattended barking dogs, people stayed quiet in off hours. The park itself is small with no biking trails or significant hiking trails. Not a lot of birdlife. They do have a nice beach which is a draw for families. We enjoyed our stay overall. We would return only if we had a waterfront site for a max of 3-4 nights. Off season would be better than summer.

    O. B. Fuller Campground

On the shores of Lake Michigan

You could drive by and miss this little gem. Beautifully kept up county park with clean shower house. Pet friendly, they even have a hitching post for your pet while visiting the bathrooms. On site hosts.

All sites are within a short walking distance of the beach and some are right on the beach. Site L1 had a good mix of beach and woods. Near the beach is a small playground for the kids.

    Lost Lake Cabins

Cabins only at this location but just down the road is a campground

The road in to the cabin campground is beautiful. Tall trees stand guard as you enter an even more peaceful area than the forest you were driving through.

There is a communal parking area with a few of the cabins in sight. You can reserve the cabins individually or get several for your family or group. You can see some recreation areas near the parking area.

The Lost Lake Campground is just down the road. This has a larger beach and boat launch. The lake is perfect for fishing. There are also several short trails and longer ones nearby.

Drive a bit further than Lost Lake Campground to Chipmunk Rapids Campground. There you will find a wonderful artesian well where you can fill up on great drinking water.

    Paint River Hills Campground

Quiet campground right by town and ORV trails.

Great little campground. It's small, clean and quiet. You self register for check-in, there's a bathroom building with 3 stalls and two showers(women) and hot water. We purchased an RV site($20) even though we were camping in a tent so our truck and trailer would fit and it comes with water and electricity at the camp site. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and fire ring. The ORV Route is right outside the campground entrance and you can ride to the trail. You can also get ice and gas at the gas station in town by taking the alley. We stayed again in 2020 in Our RV. They have 4 pull through sites with full hook-ups;$25 a night. 50/20 amps, high water pressure.

    Peshtigo River Campground

Great for Families and a weekend getaway!

I grew up about 10 minutes away from this campground and it is still an awesome place to go when we are looking for a “staycation”!

It’s right by an elementary school so it’s a very safe area, across the road from an AMAZING playground that all ages will love, also about 50ft from a beach! The beach isn’t huge, and is open to the public so at times it gets crowded but is very safe and clean. The beach is on the peshtigo river and is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, jet skiing, and tubing! There is a boat launch less than half a mile towards town on the river that is open to the public! Also includes a skatepark!

There also are two pavilions on parks grounds, both covered. One is smaller on the beach and includes grills and tables, and the other one has a stage on it for performances!

This campground is a mix between RV’s and tenting so you get the best of both worlds! Forget some necessities? No Worries! You’re a 10 minuet drive from Walmart and within walking distance of a cafe and gas stations! There are bathrooms, water hook ups, picnic tables, fire pits, and parking.

(I unfortunately do not have any recent pictures because I lost all of them but google really does a great job of showing what I’m talking about!)

    Peshtigo River Campground

    Beautiful Spot on the RIver

A few years back, I was a briefly a white water rafting guide for a company that rode on both the Menominee and Peshtigo Rivers. This camp does a great job on their tubing and river-based activities. People come from far and wide to enjoy the camp's outdoor offerings. The campground has a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes it easy to stick around. The cabin are cozy and well furnished. I only regret that I hadn't visited sooner!

Diamond Lake Family Campground and Trout Farm

    Family Oriented, Family Operated

My friends and I love camping here because of the huge wooded sites, quiet family environment, and excellent service provided by Jen, Joe and their whole family. As a privately owned campground, they take their rules and security seriously to make sure their campground is safe, clean, fun, and quiet (during quiet hours). If you're looking for the party campground, this isn't it. If you're looking for lake fun (no boats) during the day and relaxing by the fire at night, this place is a must.

    J.W. Wells State Park Campground

Michigan Upper Pensinsula/Lake Michigan Waterfront Camping

We got our new Marmot Tungston 4P tent so I took the wife and kids on a quick weekend trip to J.W. Wells State Park campground in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to test it out. I found J.W. Wells by searching for waterfront camping along Lake Michigan. There are plenty of state and national parks along Lake Michigan but not many where you can pitch your tent right along the waters edge like J.W. Wells. It also happened to be the only site within 4 hours drive of Northbrook, IL (N. Suburb of Chicago) with such close proximity to the waters edge that I could find.

The site itself is tucked right along the Green Bay coastline about 1 hour drive north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. There is a main campground for tent and RV but we chose to stay at 1 of 3 rustic tent sites a little north of the main campground. The campground was well maintained with picnic tables for each site, firepit, and a nice well groomed plot of grass for us to pitch our tent and setup camp. The main campground has showers and a playground right in the middle.

The view from our site was majestic, especially watching the sun rise over the horizon of Lake Michigan. The sunrise was the pinnacle moment of this trip. And that's really the only reason why I gave it 3 stars. The campground itself and the views are incredible, it's just that there isn't much to do around these parts. There are a couple short trails for hiking or ATV's and the Cedar River about a mile north of the site which I assume has some fishing and boating, but that was about it. The only other activity we found was to drive 30 mins north to check the small harbor town of Escanaba. Really not much to see or do there either.

I probably wouldn't recommend this campground for families or persons looking for lots of activities or places to see and visit while camping. It's great for a simple quick getaway with a great view to just sit around camp and relax.

Guide to Dunbar

Cabin camping options around Dunbar, Wisconsin accommodate a range of outdoor experiences in the northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan border region. Located amid the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, the area receives approximately 60-70 inches of annual snowfall with summer temperatures averaging in the mid-70s. Most cabin properties in the region operate seasonally from May through October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Fishing access: Keyes Lake Campground offers prime cabin locations across from the lake where "the fishing was great," according to visitor Bill B. Keyes Lake is known for bass, walleye and panfish populations.

Winter recreation: During winter months, Bewabic State Park Campground maintains year-round cabins with "access to snowmobile/ORV trails," as noted by Jeff H. The park connects to regional trail systems for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling from December through March.

Swimming beaches: Many cabin properties include beach access with varying facilities. At J.W. Wells State Park, visitors noted "a trail leading to the picnic shelter and sandy swimming beach" that connects directly to the cabin areas. The park maintains a designated swimming area with seasonal lifeguards from mid-June through Labor Day.

Hiking opportunities: Multiple short hiking trails surround cabin locations. Art S. described trails near Lost Lake Cabins: "There are also several short trails and longer ones nearby," with connections to the surrounding national forest trail system.

What campers like

Privacy levels: While some properties offer more secluded experiences, others provide social settings. At Heavens Up North Family Campground, campers appreciate "nice large sights" that are "nice and shady" with adequate space between cabins according to Kristine O.

Water proximity: Many cabins sit close to lakes or rivers. Bewabic State Park Campground offers "great beach area" with "nice beach and lake" access points where "you could see the stars" at night, according to Suzanne B.

Modern conveniences: Despite rustic settings, many cabins include unexpected amenities. Tami G. described Heavens Up North as having "the most beautiful showers and amenities I've seen camping so far," noting their updated facilities compared to typical campground standards.

What you should know

Swimming safety: Lake beaches have varying conditions. At Lake Antoine, Lynn K. mentioned "the beach was really nice and the playgrounds were great for the grandkids," offering supervised swimming areas with gradual entry points ideal for younger children.

Game facilities: Some properties offer additional entertainment. Kristine O. highlighted that Heavens Up North includes "pool, showers, dump station, mini golf and other activities" with firewood available at "a good price."

Tips from RVers

Seasonal transitions: Weather impacts access for late season stays. One visitor to Keyes Lake Campground noted the "campgrounds and the site we had was privet and large enough for our 5th wheel and truck and boat," showing the property accommodates multiple vehicles.

Hookup availability: Utility connections vary between cabin properties. Beth M. appreciated Heavens Up North's "clean, friendly staff, not trying to nickel and dime you for everything. Reasonable prices, good services" for RV connections, including electric and water availability.

Road accessibility: Road quality affects larger vehicle access. Summer Breeze Campground receives positive feedback for being "meticulously taken care of by the owners," with Ross C. noting staff "personally escorted us to our site which was next level customer service," helpful for navigating larger vehicles.
