Best RV Parks & Resorts near Winfield, WV

RV parks near Winfield provide varying levels of electric service and site sizes to accommodate different motorhome needs. Huntington/Fox Fire KOA offers 50-amp service and remains open year-round with full hookup sites, while Saint Albans Roadside Park provides free electric hookups at three RV-only sites with a two-day maximum stay. Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park features 50 sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, though the park sits directly adjacent to railroad tracks. Rippling Waters Church of God Campgrounds accommodates big rigs with both 30 and 50-amp hookups on its 50 sites. "The sites did hold a bit of water after a strong rain, be prepared if bad weather is expected," noted one camper about Robert Newlon Airpark.

Most parks in the region maintain dump stations and trash service, with several offering full sewer hookups alongside electric and water. Between Milton and Saint Albans, big rig accessibility varies significantly, with some parks having narrow access roads that limit larger vehicles. Cell service fluctuates throughout the area, especially at Kanawha State Forest where reception is limited. During fall and summer seasons, advance reservations are recommended as the more developed RV parks fill quickly. For travelers requiring nearby amenities, Saint Albans Roadside Park sits directly across from a shopping center with grocery and other services. Some RV parks experience significant road or rail noise, particularly those positioned along main transportation corridors or near highways.

    Oak Hill Campground

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

    Carthage Gap

A real slice of American camping

This is a fantastic camp ground, the owners Chris and Teresa are fantastic people and the grounds are just majestic. Sitting above two fishing lakes, one you can swim in during the summer the campground is peaceful and tranquil and next to some amazing woodland.

The camping ground caters all campers and rv’s and has full sewer hook up and water. Wash houses with showers, toilets and washing machine and dryer is available. You can have firewood delivered daily, you propane refilled and Chris and Teresa are always there to help you. this is on top of the events pavilion where something is always on. A basket ball court and two playgrounds make this ideal for family’s. On season event calendar includes archery clinics and annual hog roast and more.

the grounds are 30 minutes away from the Wayne national forest and Athens and parkersburg. The beautiful Marietta and hocking valley hills sit an hour away. Simply breathtaking

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

Four Coves Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Lots of good sites

Not far from home, and good choices of type of sites. Biggest negative is no wifi or cell service. But quiet, family friendly, and some sites away from activities to chill out at too.

Rippling Waters Church of God Campgrounds

    Very quiet

The campground was very quiet and peaceful. My 25 year old son was the youngest person there, except for 2 hours when 1 year old came to visit his grandparents. Most of the campers are there long term and were gone for the time we were there. We only saw people in about 10 of the campsites. The grass was beautifully cut and maintained. We had a pull thru site by the lake, it had to be about 100 yards long and nicely graveled. There are three small bathrooms around the grounds, that are single use rooms (sink, toilet and shower) one for women and one for men. If someone was using shower, no one else could use bathroom. They were clean but it seems they don’t get used very often by the long term campers. They were VERY musty. My wife would not go in them. The big multiple use bathroom by the entrance was much better and air was fresher. The office people were very nice and drove a golf cart to show us where our campsite was. We would stay there again, but still confused why there were so many trailers and so few people.

    Krodel Park Campground

    Krondel campground

There seem to be many long term RVs here. Sites are very close together but have power, water and sewer. It was quiet the night we stayed. Nice lake and splash pool for the kids. Paved 1 mile path around the lake. Older showers/toilets could use some updating. Decent Mexican restaurant in nearby town.

    New River Campground

    On the river

Nice campground, RIGHT ON THE RIVER. The spots not directly in the river ain’t but a stones throw away. The spots on the river are darn near in the river lol. It is really cool being that close to the river.

It’s right off the main road, no one should have any trouble getting back there and in their spot. The have a couple spots for big rigs, 5th wheels. $34 for full hook up isn’t bad.

I didn’t but there has to be some good fishin to be had there. Lots of current and they have some pictures posted of some pretty nice catches, though I didn’t pay to much attention to the dates of those pictures.

The office/store doesn’t have much. I can’t comment on the facilities. They are locked with a key pad and only available to campers without their own restroom, some covid policy stuff.

I just spent the night here passing though on my way home. I did make a reservation but there were many spots open. I believe a reservation is required but don’t quote me on that.

The sites are gravel, or at least the patio area is. It was raining off and on and was pretty muddy in spots. My camper isn’t very big so I put my passenger side wheels just on the edge of the gravel patio so my entry steps wouldn’t be in the mud and I was nearly level, side to side was good, only needed a small adjustment front to rear.

It’s down in a valley with mountains on either side. There is a train on the other side of the river. There were some geese and ducks congregating in the water near my camper at night, was pretty cool to see so many in one area.

There is a waterfall across the street and a nicer one just down the road. I have Verizon and had 4 bars cellular signal and was showing LTE but it was incredibly slow if it worked at all. I would visit again for sure.

    Huntington / Fox Fire KOA

    Party Central

We enjoyed our stay at Huntington/Fox Fire KOA! This is a holiday KOA that offers more amenities for vacationers. It has very close proximity to I-64 in West Virginia, and you can hear the traffic pretty clearly.

The staff is wonderful, they obviously care very much about their jobs and we enjoyed talking to them. They keep the property very clean which is saying a lot because it’s a very busy park. Each day we watched the park nearly empty and by sundown it was mostly full again. On the weekends it was full to capacity, and it’s occupants were out enjoying their time!

There is: great cellular for TMobile and AT&T, laundry, dog walk area, storage, cabins, a store, a swimming pond, small beach area, and some sites have fire pits. The picnic tables were pretty dated.

The hookups are a little strange. You share pedestals in many of the sites. And the arrangement is a little strange but it works.

    Saint Albans Roadside Park

Free RV Camping-Port of Saint Albans

It's rare to find free RV camping, especially sites with 30 AMP electric hook-ups!  The City of Saint Albans has a roadside park with three RV sites where you can camp for 2-days max in a 14-day period.  The sites are first-come, first-serve, with donations encouraged.  Sorry, no tent camping....

Each RV site has electricity, a picnic table, and a trash can.  There's a sewer dump site nearby with drinking water available.  The public park restrooms offer flush toilets, but no showers.  There's a nice picnic shelter and a huge playground with some handicap-accessible swings.  A shopping center is directly across the street with a grocery store and other amenities.

This park also has a public boat ramp which is part of the Port of St. Albans.  The ramp gives you direct access to the Kanawha River which is primarily used by coal barges, speed boats and vintage paddle wheelers.  For kayakers like me, you should bare left at  the bottom of the ramp and head toward the Coal River where you can enjoy a nice, peaceful paddle without the fear of being swamped or crushed.  BTW, St. Albans is home to the annual Yak Fest, mid-June, where participants in the Tour de Coal gather to enjoy live music and local eats after a 12-mile float.

A little historic trivia.  George Washington owned 2,000 acres in the Kanawha Valley, including what is now the City of Saint Albans.

The main drawback to this roadside park is that it's butted up to MacCorkle Avenue, which is a busy roadway, so I'd describe this as urban RV camping.  On the plus side, you're 15-minutes from the capital city of Charleston, WV, which is worth a visit to see the beautiful gold-domed capitol and WV State Museum.

Guide to Winfield

Campgrounds near Winfield, West Virginia sit in the rolling hills of the Kanawha Valley, where elevations range between 600-900 feet above sea level. The area experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers and moderate winters, creating year-round camping opportunities. Cell service throughout the region varies significantly by provider, with Verizon offering the most consistent coverage at most campgrounds.

What to do

Skydiving experiences: Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park offers unique recreation with its on-site skydiving activities. "The Ohio river is visible. The only real problem comes with the train tracks right here. The trains are close and do blow their whistle for crossing by the office," notes Cheryl T. about this unusual camping setting.

Fishing opportunities: Oasis Point RV Resort & Adventure Lake provides a stocked catch-and-release fishing pond. "Nice view of man-made lake with a number of fishing huts for catch-and-release fishing," reports Jacqueline H., making this a good option for anglers wanting to stay near Winfield.

Outdoor water activities: Several rv sites near Winfield, West Virginia offer water recreation options. "There is a large lake for swimming, they have stand up paddle boards and kayaks. On the other side of the lake there is a large water slide and a zip line that both end in the water," explains Dustin M. about the family amenities at Oasis Point.

What campers like

Private camping experiences: Farver Acres offers an unusually secluded setting with just three sites. "Our stay at this incredible campground was nothing short of magical. With three spacious gravel sites nestled in a quiet, serene setting, it truly felt like our own private escape from the world. We didn't see another person for four full days," writes Hannah.

Riverside settings: Camping options near Winfield often feature river access. "The river is visible," mentions Cheryl T. about Robert Newlon Airpark, while Saint Albans Roadside Park sits directly on the Kanawha River. A reviewer notes it has a "boat slip a hundred yards away to get onto the kanawha river."

Reasonable prices: Saint Albans Roadside Park offers exceptional value for RV campers visiting the Winfield area. "Wonderful overnight stop. Free electricity (30 amp). 3 spots available, first come first serve, no reservation. 2 nights max," reports Andrea W. about this budget-friendly option.

What you should know

Train noise concerns: Train tracks affect several campgrounds in the region. At Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park, one camper warns: "The campground is small. Has a nice dog park. Pickle ball courts Cafe Sky diving right here. The only real problem comes with the train tracks right here. The trains are close and do blow their whistle for crossing by the office."

Limited availability: Many smaller campgrounds fill quickly or have limited sites. Saint Albans has only three RV spots, while Farver Acres offers just three sites total. For these locations, having backup options is essential.

Varied cell and internet service: Connectivity fluctuates throughout the area. At Farver Acres, a camper reports: "We were pleasantly surprised by the fast campsite internet." However, at Kanawha State Forest, Angelo V. warns: "Dont expect to have signal. Im on tmobile and I had an occasional bar."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: Huntington / Fox Fire KOA caters to families with water recreation. "They had so much for kids to do: a swimming pond with inflatables, gem mining, banana bikes, and more. They showed a movie at 9pm on a big inflatable movie screen outside," reports Zach H.

Playground access: Several rv campsites near Winfield provide playground facilities. Saint Albans Roadside Park features "a fenced in playground that is very nice," according to Andrew S., making it suitable for families needing contained play areas.

Evening entertainment: Organized activities enhance family camping experiences. At Huntington Fox Fire KOA, "Can't complain about a movie out by the lake. Ooh and make sure you rent a banana bike! Super fun," recommends William I.

Tips from RVers

Site drainage considerations: When selecting RV sites around Winfield, consider potential water issues after rain. About Huntington Fox Fire KOA, Jerry S. mentions: "Our site was muddy but it did rain 2 out of 3 days. Site 32."

Maneuvering challenges: Kanawha State Forest presents navigation difficulties for larger rigs. "After you get off the high way expect narrow twists and turns to reach the park, the park itself isnt nearly as bad as the stretch between highway and park enterence," warns Angelo V. Another camper advises, "it is isolated with tight hairpin turn so I wouldn't recommend anything over 28'."

Hookup arrangements: Some campgrounds have unusual utility setups. About Huntington Fox Fire KOA, Laura H. explains: "The hookups are a little strange. You share pedestals in many of the sites. And the arrangement is a little strange but it works."
