What to do
Fishing in Shavers Fork River: Access prime fishing spots at Revelle's River Resort where campsites sit directly along the water. "We had a river lot which was beautiful. Restaurant, Shavers Saloon, was walking distance and had full bar with good food," according to one camper.
Stargazing without light pollution: The remote location provides exceptional night sky viewing. At Spruce Knob and Spruce Knob Observation Tower, "On a clear night, star gazing is incredible as there no ambient light. It is much cooler at this elevation, even in the summer...and the winds on the summit cut through like a knife."
Backcountry trails: Hiking options range from novice to advanced with varying terrain. "We camped off the Huckleberry Trail, which has lots of camping spots off the trail. The forest is silent and beautiful, looks like it belongs out west in the PNW. The moss-covered ground and rocks make it the perfect oasis for a weekend trip."
What campers like
Natural solitude: Spruce Knob offers peaceful camping experiences away from crowds. "In the pines, just below the summit, it is eerily quiet and muffled. I've never seen another camper when I've stayed, so the solitude is glorious."
Riverside relaxation: Five River Campground provides waterfront sites popular with glampers seeking both nature and comfort. "The river is fantastic and holds trout and smallmouth for those that like to fish. A popular spot on the weekends and gets busy with all types of travelers from class A super rigs to very modest trailers."
Proximity to small towns: Local communities offer supplies and dining options. "Go into the town of Davis and there is a local brewery and some great food. Sirianni's has the best pizza, pasta and salads you will ever find. Highland market has local raised foods."
What you should know
Limited cell service: Most camping areas have minimal or no connectivity. At Blackwater Falls State Park Campground, one reviewer noted, "This is a very oddly laid out campground. I'm including a Pic of the campground map. I made some notations. We were in the 2nd loop on site 27. Since it's been raining for a week it was very muddy."
Fire safety considerations: High winds at elevation require extra caution. "Note: utilize good camping practices and set camp on a previous location where there is an established fire ring. Again, use caution with campfires because of the wind."
Primitive facilities: Many sites have basic amenities only. "No water, so bring enough with you. There are waste receptacles but be wise and take trash with you."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Canaan Valley Resort State Park Campground offers family facilities near tent sites. "A kid's playground is situated beside (separated by a field) primitive tent sites 1 & 2. Deer meander through the primitive tent sites with their fawns each morning and evening."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children often enjoy the abundant animal sightings. "Encountered 19 deer, 1 bear, and several other small creatures. Short drive or hike to Lake with boat rentals and fishing."
Winter activities: Families can combine glamping near Riverton, West Virginia with snow sports. "Winter brings copious snowfall and the skiing here draws thousands...downhill and XC."
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Seneca State Forest accommodates larger vehicles with essential services. "We stayed in a cabin this time. One of the pioneer cabins. Let me say it was awesome, wood stove, gas light, outhouse and had to get your own water. The cabin was well put together and the staff has you set up to enjoy your stay with everything from soap to cut wood."
Site selection considerations: Not all pull-through sites are oriented for optimal RV parking. "Many of the pull thru sites are situated in the wrong direction with the electric hookup on the wrong side. The dump station is in a weird spot and the only water available is the same used for flushing."
Advanced reservations required: Luxury glamping yurts book quickly, especially for weekend stays. "We utilized one of the rv sites with 50 amp service and full hookups. The rv sites are very close together but in the week that we stayed we never heard any noise other than our own children."
