Campgrounds in the New Cumberland area of West Virginia feature wooded locations with varying terrain across the surrounding tri-state region. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons often see cooler 50-65°F conditions. Several campgrounds operate from April through October with limited winter facilities available.
What to do
Lake activities: Paddle sports rentals cost $15-30 per hour at Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins across the Ohio border. "Has a playground in every section, well equipped cabins, a swimming area with inflatables, kayak, pontoon, and paddle boarding rentals, a bumper boat area, small lake where you can fish and boat," reports Linda R.
Hiking: Multiple difficulty levels on marked trails are available at Raccoon Creek State Park Campground with over 40 miles of paths. "We did the Palomino Loop. It also was quite interesting getting to the trail. Some nice snow covered back roads," notes Jay R. who visited during winter months.
Volleyball and basketball: Free courts available at smaller parks like Jefferson Lake State Park. "Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails!" according to Theresa Tittle R.
What campers like
Privacy: Secluded campsites for tent campers at Tomlinson Run State Park Campground. "My girlfriend and I stayed at tent site 40... Most of the sites were pretty private and ours was probably the most private and had a lot of space since we were on the very end of the road / cul-de-sac," explains Dusty R.
Swimming options: Both pool and lake access at several regional campgrounds. "Nice simple, small campground sites are for everyone, RV to tent, older bathhouses but clean. Swimming pool and lake for fishing and boating!" says David A. about Tomlinson Run State Park.
Spacious campsites: Room to spread out at Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground. "Level gravel sites with really great grassy areas. We stayed memorial weekend and it was quiet by 9 every night. They do a great job keeping the park looking beautiful," according to Clean Slate D.
What you should know
Cell service: Reception varies significantly by location across the region's rv campgrounds near New Cumberland, West Virginia. "Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there. Take your time and all will be just fine," advises Mathew H. about Austin Lake.
Additional costs: Activity fees beyond camping rates at some parks. "Austin lake offers plenty of fun with the lake. Kayaking, inflatables, beach, but almost anything you want to do will cost you an additional charge. Need to use the bathhouse? Better take quarters...bc the showers are coin operated," warns Terra B.
Seasonal availability: Limited winter camping options in the area. According to park websites, most campgrounds close between October and April, with Raccoon Creek State Park being one of the few offering year-round access for cold weather camping.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds: Multiple play areas for different age groups at Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort. "Great: The pool & concession stand, beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities, nice fire rings with built in grills, trash pickup service," reports Heath T.
Kid-friendly water activities: Swimming areas with water features for children. "A little out of the way but worth the drive. Has a playground in every section, well equipped cabins, a swimming area with inflatables, kayak, pontoon, and paddle boarding rentals," Linda R. mentions about Austin Lake.
Evening entertainment: Scheduled campground activities at select parks. "Enjoyed fairly level pads, very clean vault toilets, beautiful grounds and walking trails," William Y. notes about Jefferson Lake State Park where families can enjoy nighttime programming during peak season.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Check before booking as many RV sites have slope issues. "Sites are large and the area is peaceful. The area is well kept and owners are very nice," reports cathy about Chestnut Ridge, where RV sites feature more level ground than other area campgrounds.
Road access considerations: Some challenging approaches to campgrounds throughout the region. "The approach to Raccoon Creek State Park involves several narrow roads," as noted in various reviews, with similar challenges at other parks in the hilly terrain surrounding New Cumberland.
Extended stays: Monthly options available at Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA for longer-term RV camping. "Camping in a 33 ft travel trailer with slides. Verizon service is great. Wifi in extended parking doesn't work well. The staff are helpful and polite. We are in the extended stay part of the campground which is quiet," explains Ariel F.
