Nice spot, nothing special

Nice backcountry campground, complete with privy toilet, firepits, and a picnic table (though it is in disrepair) -- makes roughing it even easier. Water is easy access from the creek, which is just down the hill. This is the perfect site for a large group, but it also has a few smaller “tucked away” spots for individuals, couples, etc. Group cooking area is ok, but the bear boxes are a good ways from the cooking area. When we visited in August, there were quite a few flies working the day shift, so bring your bug spray. Cost=free! Permit required from NOCA Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I hike from Cascade Pass to Cottonwood Camp in North Cascades?

To reach Cottonwood Camp from Cascade Pass, follow the Sahale Arm Trail from Cascade Pass. The hike is approximately 4-5 miles one-way with significant elevation change. The trail descends from Cascade Pass into the Stehekin Valley, following Cascade Creek. The path is well-maintained but challenging, with several stream crossings. Be prepared for alpine conditions including potential snow patches early in the season. Carry a topographic map and check trail conditions with North Cascades National Park rangers before starting your journey, as conditions can change rapidly in this remote area.

When is the best time to camp at Cottonwood Camp in North Cascades?

The optimal time to camp at Cottonwood Camp is mid-summer through early fall (July through September). During this period, trails are typically clear of snow and creek crossings are manageable. Weather is generally more stable with warmer temperatures and less precipitation. The North Cascades region experiences significant snowfall, limiting access during winter and spring months. Always check current conditions before your trip, as early season snow can persist at higher elevations and autumn storms can arrive unexpectedly in this mountain environment.

What permits are required for camping at Cottonwood Camp in North Cascades?

Backcountry permits are required for overnight stays at Cottonwood Camp. Obtain permits through North Cascades National Park's wilderness permit system. Reservations can be made in advance for a portion of permits, while others are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There's a fee for these permits. During peak season (summer), permits may be limited and competitive. Check the North Cascades National Park website for current reservation procedures and availability windows, which typically open in spring for the summer season.

What amenities and facilities are available at Cottonwood Camp in North Cascades?

Cottonwood Camp offers basic backcountry amenities including a privy toilet, established fire pits, and a picnic table (though it may be in disrepair). The camp is suitable for larger groups while also offering a few smaller, more secluded sites. Water is readily available from the nearby creek just down the hill, but should be filtered or treated before consumption. As a backcountry site, there is no running water, electricity, or other developed facilities. Pack in all supplies you'll need and be prepared to pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles.
