Not my favorite campsite in NOCA

Ok backcountry campground, with privy but no firepit or separate cooking area. Just 3 rough, very small campsites. Bear canisters are required. Rough and slippery trail up from Cascade Pass parking lot. View on a clear day is amazing! Cost=free! Permit required from NOCA Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Johannesburg Campground?

Johannesburg Campground offers minimal backcountry amenities. The site includes a privy (backcountry toilet) but lacks fire pits or designated cooking areas. There are only three rough, very small campsites available. Bear canisters are required for food storage. The campground is free to use, but visitors must obtain a wilderness permit from the North Cascades National Park Wilderness Information Center before camping.

What is the best time of year to visit Johannesburg Campground?

The best time to visit Johannesburg Campground is during the summer and early fall (typically July through September) when the high-elevation trails are free of snow and weather conditions are most favorable. This timeframe offers the best chance for clear skies and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. The North Cascades region experiences heavy snowfall, so access is generally limited to the warmer months when trails are passable and backcountry camping is more comfortable.

Where is Johannesburg Campground located in the North Cascades?

Johannesburg Campground is located in the backcountry of North Cascades National Park, accessible via the Cascade Pass trail. To reach the campground, hikers must start from the Cascade Pass parking lot and follow a somewhat rough and occasionally slippery trail that climbs up from the parking area. The campground sits in a pristine wilderness setting that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains on clear days.

Can you access hiking trails from Johannesburg Campground?

Yes, Johannesburg Campground serves as an excellent base for hiking in the North Cascades. The campground itself is accessed via the Cascade Pass trail, which is one of the most popular hiking routes in the park. From the campground, adventurous hikers can explore further into the backcountry, potentially connecting to other trails in the area. The location offers spectacular alpine scenery and challenging terrain for experienced hikers. Always check current trail conditions with park rangers before setting out, as weather can significantly impact trail accessibility.
