Best RV Parks & Resorts near Hampden-Sydney, VA

Several RV campgrounds near Hampden-Sydney provide full-hookup options for recreational vehicles. Thousand Trails Lynchburg operates seasonally from April 28 to October 29 with water, sewer and electric hookups. Sites include 30-amp service and accommodate various RV sizes. Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort in Powhatan features level sites with brick paver pads and runs from April through mid-November. "Sites are a good size and laid out well. There is a mix of site amenities," noted one camper. Pickett RV Park in Blackstone offers 50-amp electric service with sewer and water connections, while Twin Lakes State Park Campground provides electric and water hookups with a sanitary dump station.

Throughout the region, RV park amenities vary considerably between state parks and private facilities. Twin Lakes and Bear Creek Lake State Parks maintain clean bathhouses with showers but limit RV lengths to 35 feet including tow vehicles. Several reviewers mentioned connectivity challenges, with Wi-Fi strength varying depending on proximity to main buildings. Seasonal availability differs significantly among properties – some state parks remain open year-round while private facilities like Thousand Trails close during winter months. Propane filling services are limited, requiring advance planning for extended stays.

    Powhatan State Park Campground

    Huge park, great sites!

What a beautiful park! Over 1500 acres with 40 sites, this trip was the start of the camping season for me- the opening weekend for camping in State Parks in VA(COVID-19). The park and grounds are extremely well-maintained. I was very happy to see such a clean bathhouse, especially during the current pandemic. Each staff member I encountered was extremely helpful and polite. The park has lots of trails, miles of open meadows, and James River access. Great park for bicycling. The sites in the River Bend Campground(main campground) are private and wooded, especially this time of year when the trees are so full. The map makes it look like they’re really close together so I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to my site, which was the las time available for booking(#16). There are 29 tent/RV sites and three yurts. The sites are gravel and include a picnic table, lantern/trash pole, and a fire pit with grill gate. Theres also a group site for 24 or so, bit that’s not open at the moment due to state restrictions. There’s overflow parking for the campground, dumpsters, and a dump station. Some are pull-through for RVSs and many have water/electric. Wood is for sale at the park but no ice or refreshments. Pet-friendly. There are also laundry facilities at the main bathhouse, nice hot/cold showers. Many picnic areas and a playground. There’s also a canoe-in site with 8 primitive sites: no water, electricity, or facilities(there’s a pit toilet). Depending on the time of the year they might be in the flood zone if the river is high, which it was during this trip. Some of those sites can also be booked for hiking into- it’s only a 0.2 walk from the parking lot. Tabb Monument State Park is nearby if you’re working your way through the parks as I am (no overnight facilities there). You’re also about 10-15 minutes from the town of Powhatan so if you need groceries or gas, you’re not far from Sheetz, Food Lion, etc. Loved this park so much and will definitely be returning!!!

    Charlottesville KOA

    Great Price and Great Service

For the past four or five years I have come to this campground each year in the offseason, April or October, to visit while the temps in Virginia are cooler and less humid. This KOA offers free wifi and cable TV with no connection problems. If ever you have a problem, stay is ready to help. My last visit I had to replace a kitchen faucet, which was leaking due to poor winterization by CW. A staff person spent an hour or more replacing the faucet, android not want to be paid, but only asked that we donate to the kids and camping charity he supported. The showers and bathroom facilities have been remodeled and were both clean and quite efficient. The campground itself is just 10 minutes from the city of Charlottesville and a few minutes from Monticello as well as many fine Virginia wineries. It's the perfect area to be in to visit The Blue Ridge Mountains, historic Fredricksburg, or Appomattox (all 50 to 90 minutes away). Campsites are not on top of each other, and both pull-through and back-in spots are available. The pool area looks like a nice place to be, with shaded areas and many places to sit (though I have never had the opportunity to use it, because of the season I visit).

Henderson Point Campground — Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Large lake with plenty of tall pines

We stayed in Henderson Point Campground, loop 2, site 68 in late August. 30 amp hookup, drinking water hookup was easily accessible (no need for a super long hose), no sewer hookups. The site was a back in and pretty level with only a slight decline as you move toward the rear. The view was absolutely gorgeous. East facing, the semi private beach was easily accessible and only maybe 50ft from the site. From what I could tell the campground was booked that weekend but you could barely hear any noise from your neighbors. The only complaints would be that the bathrooms are kind of far from this site (I never actually went but imagine a good 5 minute walk) and the dump station is about a mile away. Neither of these would keep us from returning; we can hardly wait to go back to this campground.

Red Oak Campground — James River State Park

    Wonderful Place to stay !!!

The sites were very generous in size - not cramped at all! Sites were partially shaded and backed up to woods. Lots of beautiful hiking/biking/equestrian trails to explore. Bathrooms were very clean and nice. Bundles of firewood sold $7 each. Nice fire ring at each site. Pet friendly. Will definitely return!!

    Nice Campground, Close to Attractions

We really like the location of this campground as we wanted to explore the VA wine country, Monticello, Skyline Drive and other sites in the area. Overall, we liked the park which had nice campsites, was very clean and well-kept, and we liked our campsite which was level and had full hook-up.

Our campsite was a back-in which was in a quiet corner of the campground. The site was long enough for our 45’ motorhome and tow car. The site was perfectly level, gravel, and had nice grass on the patio which our dog enjoyed. All the utilities were well-placed, so you didn’t need additional hoses. The cable hook-up provided us with plenty of television channels and the wifi worked well (albeit we just used it to check email and did not stream anything). Some campsites are pull-thrus (if you don’t wat to unhitch or back up) but it seemed this section was busier with transient campers coming and going and the sites seemed a little tighter. Some back-in sites have a wooded area behind them and more shade than our relatively open site. There are tent sites situated under trees for shade and to add a little privacy. Tent areas have a picnic table and fire pit along with a wooden bench and high table you could use for food prep. The campground does not allow hammocks so make sure you have a tent and were not planning on sleeping in your hammock.

As you would expect with a KOA, there are lots of amenities and many that are geared towards kids (although we didn’t see too many during our stay). There are two really nice playground with slides, swings, climbing walls, game room, swimming pool, bouncy pillow, etc. There is a small little basketball area with one hoop and a paved surface which is adequate for shooting hoops but not playing a full-court game. The dog park was surprisingly big and we were impressed at the size which was big enough to throw a ball for our lab. Other nice amenities were the fishing pond and a½ mile nature trail in the campground.

Longwood Campground at John H Kerr Reservoir

    Serenity

Site 16 Left (non-electric) September 18-21, 2020 Average Daily Temp: 76 Average Night Temp: 51 Arrived on a beautiful early Fall Friday afternoon. Host was extremely friendly and welcoming. He offered great advice and information for this first time visit. Firewood is not available on site. You have to travel back to a self service trailer about 4 miles near the local CVS on Route 58. In my humble opinion, Site 16 was the best view of the Lake and has easy accessibility (see photos). Because of the low evening temps, most of the non-electric sites were empty. We basically had run of the area. Pet friendly and very well kept areas. Rock pad for parking and tent set up. Bring a pad if you plan on sleeping on the ground. Two tables, fire pit, and lantern post on sites. Boat parking available close to this site. Swimming was fantastic. Fishing was even better. Will be back.

Guide to Hampden-Sydney

The state parks and private RV facilities around Hampden-Sydney, Virginia sit at elevations between 400-600 feet in Virginia's Piedmont region. This central location provides access to both the Blue Ridge Mountains and coastal areas within a few hours' drive. Camping options vary seasonally with temperatures ranging from 30°F winter nights to humid 90°F summer days.

What to do

Stargazing at night sky sites: Staunton River State Park, located about an hour south of Hampden-Sydney, has earned International Dark Sky designation. "The park has been recognized as International Dark sky and there are two telescopes that can be checked out for free at the visitor's center," notes Elena B. The park features a large open field near the check-in area ideal for nighttime viewing.

Kayaking and water activities: Twin Lakes State Park Campground offers water-based recreation on its swimming lake. "The swimming lake is a good size. There is a concession stand, a beach with lifeguard, and a rental station for paddle boats," reports Andrea N. The park provides various boat rental options during summer months.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple parks offer fishing access with varying catch potential. "Fishing was not bad. Caught my first ever catfish," mentions Ross B. about Bear Creek Lake State Park. Many campers bring their own gear, though some parks have limited equipment available to borrow.

What campers like

Clean, updated facilities: Bear Creek Lake State Park Campground maintains well-kept shower facilities. "Bathrooms are clean, and have showers and electrical outlets to charge devices if needed," writes Stephanie J. This park uses shredded tire material for tent pads rather than gravel, providing extra cushioning.

Wooded campsites with lake access: Lakefront sites provide convenient water access at several parks. "The tent-only section of the campground is alongside a lake, which provides beautiful views," Brittany B. explains about Bear Creek Lake. "Tent sites are shady, although some can be VERY close to one another," RL adds about Twin Lakes State Park.

Family-friendly programming: Staunton River State Park Campground offers structured activities for children. "Park rangers had great kids programs including animal feeding frenzy where we learned about snakes and turtles and we invoked in feeding. Also lots of any pelts to learn about," shares Katie. Many parks schedule weekend ranger programs during peak season.

What you should know

Seasonal availability limitations: Operating schedules vary significantly between parks. "Only open from May to October each year so be sure to check that out before just showing up!" warns Bran P. about Thousand Trails Lynchburg. Most state parks remain open year-round but with reduced services in winter.

Site spacing considerations: Proximity between campsites differs across campgrounds. "Sites are extremely close together and campground is kind of tiny," notes RL about Staunton River State Park. Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort has similar challenges as "the sites were a little close together for my liking, but they were still very nice," according to Sam M.

Limited connectivity: Cell service and WiFi availability fluctuate throughout the region. "Sites are a bit much for tent camping" with limited amenities compared to the RV-focused facilities, Crystal C. explains about Cozy Acres. Most parks have stronger signals near main buildings or offices.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access during summer: Thousand Trails Lynchburg provides swimming options when temperatures rise. "This was the perfect spot to stay after a long drive. We saw bunnies and then lightening bugs. The pool was great for the kids," shares Liz F. Most pool facilities operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Playgrounds and biking opportunities: Several parks offer dedicated children's play areas. "They have a large playground for the kids and the roads are good for bike riding," Jennifer G. explains about Twin Lakes. Daybreak Glamp Camp creates a supportive environment where "the owner and his family were super sweet and helpful," according to Katie M.

Wildlife viewing for children: Morning and evening animal sightings enhance the camping experience. "While staying there I saw a skunk, a groundhog, several deer and a great variety of birds," Elena B. recounts about Staunton River State Park. Most wildlife activity occurs around dawn and dusk.

Tips from RVers

RV length restrictions: State parks enforce strict size limitations on recreational vehicles. "Limit on RV length to 35 feet including tow vehicles," warns Erica M. about Bear Creek Lake State Park. Pickett RV Park provides more spacious options with 50-amp service in Blackstone.

Site amenities and layout: Private rv parks near Hampden-Sydney Virginia typically offer more developed sites. "Our favorite little getaway. Level sites with brick paver pads, full hookups, RV storage, playground, pool, store, fire rings, 3 fishing ponds, awesome owners," Jennifer B. describes about Cozy Acres Campground.

Electrical service variations: Power options differ across campgrounds in the region. "Almost every site has a bag over there electricity. Limited 50 amps," Terri A S. reports about Thousand Trails Lynchburg. Todd K. notes that Pickett RV Park provides reliable hookups at reasonable rates: "for 25 dollars a night. The price was right."
