Little River State Park offers elevated glamping experiences near Northfield, Vermont within Vermont's Green Mountains. Several state parks in the region provide canvas cabin options, lean-to structures, and rustic glamping sites at elevations ranging from 900 to 2,100 feet above sea level. Seasonal access typically runs from May through mid-October, with many parks closing after Columbus Day weekend.
What to do
Hiking historical trails: At Little River State Park Campground, explore the network of hiking trails with unique historical elements. "We visited here with our 5 kiddos for 2 nights late July 2016. The facilities were clean, the small playground was great, and the small boat launch and beach kept us in the water. The hiking trails are really good--the actually pretty steep. There are lots of old foundations hidden on the trails that are fun to discover," notes Rita M.
Paddling on motor-free waters: Ricker Pond State Park Campground offers tranquil paddling experiences on waters where motorboats are restricted. "A quiet camp ground on Ricker Pond, a motor free pond, is a wonderful way to spend the weekend. The pond is serene and a great place to swim, paddle, explore, and fish. If you paddle or swim to the other side of the camp ground, there is a huge rock with a rope swing," shares Hannah H.
Backcountry camping: For more adventurous glamping near Northfield, Vermont, seek out remote sites accessible only by water. "There are many beautiful backcountry campsites right on the water only accessible via the water. Great local overnight spot with flat tenting, privies, and picnic tables," explains one camper about the remote opportunities at Little River State Park.
What campers like
Serene natural settings: Campers consistently praise the peaceful atmosphere at Smugglers Notch State Park Campground. "They don't have all the usual amenities its more of a primitive set up. Has great clean sites with multiple ways to access mount mansfields trail system which is the highest mountain in the state of Vermont. Staff are friendly and respectful of privacy. Great deal on wood," reports Michael V.
Proximity to water activities: The ability to enjoy water activities directly from campsites is highly valued. "The pond is really nice especially since very few motor boats are on the pond. Mostly just kayaks and canoes which you can rent from the park," Rachel N. shares about Ricker Pond State Park.
Winter accessibility: Some parks offer off-season experiences for the adventurous. "Stayed at a lean-to site here in March of 2019. Free of charge during off season, you just have to call a couple weeks ahead to reserve and make sure you park in the allotted area. Hike/snowshoe in to your site as the gate is closed and the area is not plowed. No facilities off season…Carry out all trash/waste," notes Ed M. about Smugglers Notch State Park.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Advanced planning is essential, especially for premium glamping options. "I've been visiting Ricker Pond for nearly 20 years (except for the years that I don't book enough in advance and aren't able to secure a spot for my desired length of stay). My favorite lean to site is directly on the water, private, and fills up fast," advises Neena B.
Limited services: Mount Philo State Park Campground offers minimal amenities but exceptional views. "Only 8 campsites, dispersed in the trees. $23/night. Picnic table and fire pit. Moderate cell service. Nice hikes and cool views of the area!" notes Kaelin P. Showers are coin-operated at many parks, typically 50 cents for 5 minutes.
Variable cell service: Connectivity varies significantly across parks. "This is a pretty small State Park, so it fills up quickly. The sites on the pond are beautiful if you can get one! The campground has a small beach, boat launch and it's right on the Cross Vermont Trail. I stayed in October and it was really quiet and relaxing. There is absolutely no cell service for miles, so plan accordingly," warns Michele S. about Ricker Pond.
Tips for camping with families
Ranger-led activities: State parks often offer educational programs for children. "The ranger programming was exceptional, as are the views and the nearby areas for hiking and backpacking. Relatively modern campsite but still a simple state park setup with one exception: true to northeast tradition many of the camp sites are lean-to style," explains Harry H. from Smugglers Notch State Park.
Private camping loops: Stillwater State Park Campground offers family-friendly layouts. "We stayed here in early August 2016 with friends and kids. The tent only loop is so private and perfect for kids biking and swimming. Nice pavilion and the pond was wonderful for canoes and kayaks," recommends Rita M.
Swimming options: For families seeking glamping near Northfield with swimming access, consider beach quality. "The lake water was beautiful and clear. There was enough sand at the camper beach for sand castles and other beach games. We did see a few leeches here and there--none right at the swimming area, but more to the side, close to the vegetated areas," notes Rita M. about Stillwater.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup availability: Most state parks near Northfield offer rustic camping with few amenities for RVs. "Very nice campground, great location! The reservoir was beautiful. Took the kayak, only issue I had was getting to the lake. Most sites up on hill looking over lake, not easily assessable from camp site, but still had a great time," reports Cindy L. about Little River State Park.
Alternate accommodation options: North Beach Campground offers more services for RVs. "This has been one of our favorite campsites so far. We loved being able to walk down to the beach, as well as having full hookups. We also met the nicest people here. You can purchase firewood at the office, and there are also propane options," shares Laura L.
Accessibility concerns: Some parks have terrain challenges. "We got an error on our control panel that said stop! Power source is not correct! Dan, one of the owners, said that somebody must have tried to hook a 50 amp into the 30 amp box," reports one RVer, highlighting the importance of verifying electrical compatibility when booking.
