Lot's of potential sites!

This is now my current go to for last minute camping. Picked a pull-off spot about 10 min up the highway and was really surprised. It went pretty deep and and truly felt like I was away. Only downside is you can occasionally hear louder vehicles like motorcycles during the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities or facilities are available at Monte Cristo dispersed camping areas?

Monte Cristo dispersed camping offers a true primitive camping experience with no developed amenities. There are no restrooms, potable water, picnic tables, or trash services available at the pull-off sites. Campers should come fully prepared with all necessary supplies including water, toilet paper, and waste disposal bags. The camping spots provide natural surroundings and privacy, but require self-sufficiency and adherence to pack-it-in, pack-it-out principles.

Where exactly is Monte Cristo dispersed camping located in Utah?

Monte Cristo dispersed camping is located along the Monte Cristo Highway (State Route 39) in northern Utah. The dispersed camping pull-offs can be found along this scenic route that runs through the Cache National Forest area. Specifically, pull-off spots are situated about 10 minutes up the highway, with areas that extend deeper into the forest providing a secluded camping experience away from the main road.

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping in Monte Cristo?

At Monte Cristo, standard dispersed camping regulations apply. Campers should practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and use existing fire rings if having a campfire. Camping is typically limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Vehicles must stay on established roads and parking areas. No permits are required for casual camping, but always check with the local Forest Service office for temporary fire restrictions or seasonal closures before your trip.

What is the best time of year to go dispersed camping at Monte Cristo?

The best time for dispersed camping at Monte Cristo is late spring through early fall (May to September), when the high-elevation roads are reliably free of snow. Summer offers pleasant temperatures at this elevation, making it an excellent escape from valley heat. Monte Cristo is particularly ideal for last-minute camping trips during peak season. Be aware that occasional traffic noise from motorcycles and other vehicles can be heard during daytime hours, though the pull-off spots extend deep enough to provide a sense of seclusion.
