Dispersed Camping

Mammoth Dispersed

Mammoth Dispersed, near Cedar City, Utah, is a fantastic spot for those who appreciate the beauty of nature without the frills of traditional campgrounds. This area offers a few campsites along a picturesque creek, surrounded by the stunning Dixie National Forest, making it a prime location for relaxation and exploration.

Visitors often rave about the serene environment, with plenty of room for kids and pets to roam. Many have enjoyed creating their own fire pits and gathering around the campfire, as fires are allowed in designated areas. One camper noted, “Such a beautiful spot. Right next to Mammoth Creek surrounded by Dixie National Forest.”

While amenities are limited—there's no drinking water or electric hookups—there are pit toilets available, and the natural surroundings more than make up for it. Reviewers have highlighted the abundance of trails for off-highway vehicles and hiking, making it easy to get lost in the wilderness.

If you're planning a visit, be aware that weekends can get busy, especially during holidays. As one camper mentioned, “Probably a better idea during the week if you like some peace and quiet.” Whether you're here for a weekend escape or a longer adventure, Mammoth Dispersed offers a beautiful backdrop for your outdoor activities.

Looks like a developed CG

This so called designated dispersed is actually more like a regular developed CG, with gravel pads, and a vault toilet. Don't even come on from the north on that sketch road, it was narrow rocky and VERY STEEP into the hole the CG is in. Come on on south end thru the subdivision housing area.

A few nice spots but not many and a long drive to get there

10 miles on a fairly well maintained Gravel Road to locate three or four campsites that accommodate RVs. No water, electricity, garbage disposal, etc. Some sites have fire rings. I made my own spot by moving some dead wood and created my own fire pit with available stones and tons of available dry firewood. Do not try to go past the Gated area as that is extremely rough and only meant for four wheelers.

Beautiful little spot

We went with two campers and were lucky to pull into spot 3 on a Friday morning. All the other spots were taken but it cleared out Monday afternoon and we had the whole place ourselves for the rest of the week. We left on a Thursday morning and people were already scouting spots for the weekend. There are 4 or 5 spots along the river and two beautiful tucked away spots just for tent camping at the end of the road. If you’re pulling a camper I would recommend coming in the back way where Aspen Meadow turns into Mammoth creek. We had a heck of time navigating the steep hill with the camper. Plenty of room for the kids and dogs to run around and having the bathroom close was nice. Very beautiful area and close to mammoth caves and not too far from Bryce Canyon. Looks like plenty of trails for OHV as well.

Free Campsites

My expectation was dispersal camping but it’s more like a planned campsite for free, first come but plenty of other dispersal camping in the area so if you don’t get a spot you will have a easy time finding another location. The creek is gorgeous but the flow was extremely fast and very loud. I opted for a campsite further from the creek and it was still loud at night. There was a large amount of RV’s camping in the area, for the most part they were respectful about not running their generators constantly, just be aware that you can be close to one another if you choose to camp right next to the creek. There is several toilets, one near the campsites and one near the day use only sites. There is fire pits available but still need to check if fires are permitted during the time you camp. Wonderful little free campground, I’m definitely coming back again.

Doesn’t feel dispersed but nice spot

The area is BEAUTIFUL! There is a nice stream at the camp and lots of OHV trails. We went for 4th of July weekend. Came in Thursday night and had no problem finding a spot, however by Saturday it was crazy busy. I doubt it gets real busy without the holiday though. No wood fires allowed here and the rangers were all over trying to bust people for fires. The weather was nice and cool and it was easy to get to. About a miles down a dirt road. We got our flat bed trailer down it and saw multiple people make it down with their smaller campers.

Nice spot but very popular

Came in on Friday, no spots available, nice spot right on the creek. Probably a better idea during the week if you like some peace a quiet. Ended up camping off a near by 4x4 trail. Ended up being a quiet relaxing weekend with no neighbors :)

Mammoth Creek camping area

This place is absolutely beautiful! Tons of trails around to explore on, multiple places along the creek to check out and explore some more. And if fishing in a creek isn’t your thing Panguitch Lake is about 20 mins north and Duck Creek (which you probably came through) is about 20-30 mins back down the mountain. By far one of favorite places to go!

Great Spot!

Perfect location for any size group. Very quiet and serene. Next to a river and close to navajo lake. Had some fire pits and a small bathroom. Awesome spot!
