Paddlers and anglers find direct access to B.A. Steinhagen Lake at this 702-acre state park campground managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The facility spreads across both sides of Highway 190, with many sites positioned along sloughs that branch off the main lake. Most campsites provide enough mature trees for hammock setup, and several offer waterfront views where campers can watch wildlife move through the area.
The campground operates year-round with electric, water, and sewer hookups available at $14-$55 per night. "All sites have water and bathrooms are not too far away from any one site," notes Brian V.. Restroom facilities receive regular maintenance, though they lack air conditioning and can feel cramped during busy weekends. Recent road repaving has improved access throughout the park, though lighting remains limited after dark.
Canoe and kayak rentals provide affordable lake access, with the south side offering open water for swimming and paddling. The north side features a paddling trail, though vegetation has increasingly narrowed the route. Several hiking trails wind through the forested terrain, connecting directly to campsites. Wildlife sightings include deer, armadillos, raccoons, and alligators that patrol the waterways without bothering visitors.
Summer brings fewer crowds but aggressive mosquitoes, making insect repellent essential for trail use and evening activities. The park can flood significantly during heavy rains, creating large standing water pools throughout the grounds. Verizon provides reliable cell service with 3-4 bars and download speeds reaching 50-60 Mbps. A convenience store sits just across the bridge, with full services available 15 minutes away in Jasper.
For additional camping options in the region, explore places to camp around Spurger. The park's combination of lake access and wooded sites makes it a practical base for exploring East Texas waterways.
