Sandy sites along the shoreline of Elephant Butte Lake define the camping experience at Lower Ridge Road, where RV pads sit directly on the beach within New Mexico's largest state park. Sites here provide water and electric hookups, with each spot featuring a covered picnic table and fire ring. The lake level varies significantly by season, affecting both the scenery and beach access.
Multiple camping areas spread across the park create different experiences for visitors. Lions Beach Campground operates more like an RV park with closely spaced sites, while Desert Cove Campground offers quieter conditions. "Lake has been low for a while, but it's still very pretty," notes Lora H.. The soft sand poses challenges for vehicles without four-wheel drive, particularly during busy weekends when dispersed camping fills the beach areas.
Fishing dominates the activities here, with a marina providing boat access to the expansive lake. Hiking and biking trails connect the various camping loops. Swimming remains popular despite fluctuating water levels. Cell service varies by location, with some sites receiving better coverage than others. The park maintains vault toilets throughout, though the main shower facilities require a longer walk from many sites.
Bathroom conditions receive mixed reviews from campers. Push-button showers provide limited water time, and some facilities show their age. "Overall, great location and views, but bring a shower bag," advises Jessica C.. Fire restrictions often apply, though propane fire pits work within 30 feet of water.
Reserve sites online or by phone, as the park uses a third-party booking system. Spring and fall provide the most comfortable weather conditions for extended stays.
