Black Kettle Campground provides free camping within Cibola National Forest and Grasslands, accessible via paved roads that lead directly to individual sites. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no pet restrictions, making it an accessible option for RV and tent campers alike.
The layout includes two distinct camping areas connected by the main access road. The primary loop to the left after entering contains approximately six individual sites plus one group area, all surrounded by mature trees that provide natural windbreaks. A second area near the lake offers additional dispersed sites, though day-use restrictions may apply seasonally. "Pros: isolated, free, there are trees surrounding the small loop that keep you protected," notes Alexandra T.. Most sites feature fire rings, picnic tables, and pedestal grills, though campers report varying levels of slope across different spots.
The campground includes two red water pumps providing potable water, though they require carrying containers uphill from parking areas. Vault toilets and centralized trash service are available, with maintenance staff typically arriving around 10:30 AM for cleaning. The adjacent lake supports fishing from a pier and boat ramp, and several short trails connect to camping areas. Cell service works reliably for most carriers, and campers can gather deadfall firewood from the surrounding area.
Road noise from the nearby highway remains audible throughout the night, and some sites experience fly activity during warmer months. The red Oklahoma soil transfers easily when wet, potentially staining gear and clothing. Sites fill quickly during hunting season, but the campground typically sees light use otherwise. For campers wanting more remote options, Spring Creek Dispersed Sites offers additional free camping opportunities seven miles west.
