Campground was closed. Beautiful drives and hikes, we had to spend the night and explore more. Boat ramp is public, and offers a nice walk up call in the morning (by fishermen).
Beautiful views of Mt Elbert. Large lot that could fit ANY rv. Amazing tent sights. Vault toilets are shared with boaters that have an adjacent parking lot. Super close to Colorado trail.
There are several very dispersed spots, but its all open so dont expect too much privacy or shelter from the wind. Gorgeous sunset to sunrise. Watch eagles prey on ducks, pelicans gather, hear the frogs croak. Gnats get a little crazy before the bats show up. Nightime lights permeate the sky across the lake, but star viewing is still possible.
How awesome! Covered picnic tables. Nice big fire pits with grate for cooking. Playground, trails and boulders to climb. Nice stop between Joshua Tree and Sequoia. And it's FREE! Well, for now anyway. I showed up late at night and was the only camper but all the others' trash was left behind. Including, inside the vault toilet. Keep partying it up and they'll start charging for the maid service, losers.
On a Friday night, we were the only folks camping at Skipout Lake. It was beautiful weather. This shelterbelt definitely saved us from some high winds. If you can mind the fire ants and pick up a few pieces of trash, this place is a gem. Wonderful trail, first class dock to fish from, beautiful wildflowers, potable water, vault toilet, boat ramp.
