Recreational activities abound at these glamping destinations with opportunities for water sports on spring-fed lakes. Tyler State Park maintains several miles of hiking trails through pine forests, with options ranging from 1-5 miles in length. Paddle boards, kayaks, and pedal boats are available for rent at the park's small store, allowing glampers to explore the no-wake lake. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer and raccoons, which frequently visit the camping areas. The swimming area features a sandy beach and diving platform for summer recreation. According to one camper, "The water is clear and great for swimming, which is a rarity in Texas." Most glamping accommodations require reservations well in advance, particularly during peak seasons, with availability opening 151 days prior to arrival dates.

      Tyler State Park Campground

      Lots to do!

It being August in Texas, we rented a limited use cabin with air conditioning. It also has a mini frig and a microwave inside. It has a queen size bed for which campers need to bring their own pillows and bed linens. The frig was super cold, and the AC worked well. There was a wood table with four chairs. The table was really sticky, so I recommend bringing something you can use as a table cloth. There are only six of these cabins, and they have a four bathroom building at the end of the cul de sac. No tents or pets are allowed at the cabin sites. Each has fire pit and water outside cabin

The park has a very small lake with canoe, kayak, paddle board, row boat, and paddle boat rentals. Life vests are provided with rental. It was fun! There is a good sized swimming area too. There are a number of trails of varying difficulty, some for hiking only, some for home and bike. Ranger programs offered.

      Great place

This was the closest place with camping near Longview. We have looked at it before, but plans feel through. We got a camping spot Mothers day weekend. It was wonderful. Hosts are great and its well kept. Had access to a outdoor kitchen and awesome bathrooms. We fell in love with the place. Will try and book the school house for our anniversary. Many unique places to stay..

      Tyler State Park Campground

      One of our favorite parks

I should mention that my husband is from Canada. He was very unenthusiastic about camping in Texas. Well Tyler State Park made him change his mind! He LOVED the large trees, said it was the closest he'd felt to home in quite some time. We love the variety of types of sites they offer. Lake front, group, hike in, cabin, they have something for everyone! Only downfall is they book so quickly.

      The Boulders at Lake Tyler

      Perfect First Trip!

We brought our Springdale Mini by Keystone to The Boulders for our first ever camping trip and could not have had a better experience. The grounds were clean and well maintained. Concrete sites made setup and leveling super easy. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful - when we mentioned it was our first trip, they guided us into our site and gave us tips on setup. The waterfront views were beautiful and the amenities were wonderful. They had a variety of rentals available - golf carts, kayaks, and pontoon boats. They offer boat ramp and docks and a fishing barge. The bait shop has a variety of supplies and snacks. The bathrooms were very clean. They also have a nice playground. The picnic tables at the sites looked new and all sites had a fire pit with a grill top. Overall, a great trip!

      Tyler State Park Campground

Great camping 2 hours from Dallas

I visited the Shortleaf camping area in the Tyler State Park for the weekend to participate in a 50k trail race. Each campsite in this area has a sheltered cabin, picnic table, fire pit and 2 parking spots. Tent camping is also permitted on the site but I used my iKamper Roof Top Tent as my primary place to sleep. The sheltered cabin has screens on the windows to keep the bugs out and electricity. I used this area primarily for storage of the food & gear that I used during the weekend. My campsite was located at the bottom of a hill and had a path to the restrooms and showers. These facilities were very clean and had 2 shower stalls and 3 toilet stalls along with 2 sinks. This location had access to the lake via a short hike. This type of camp site is the best of both worlds, you can camp via tent/car and still have a cabin like experience via the sheltered cabin.

In September it is still pretty warm in Tyler, humidity was 100% when I visited without rain. I'll visit again in October when the cooler temps arrive and undoubtable have an even better experience.

      Pros

Area 2 campground night sky friendly with good dark sky viewing

Not charged a fee to make my own on-line reservation

EXXON station directly outside of State Park sold oak firewood 25 pieces for $20

      Cons

Raccoons very aggressive and tried to take food that we were eating from our hands!!! Area 2 Lakeview sites require leveling side-to-side

Area 2 campsite parking pads are narrow with trees and large boulders close to parking pad.

ery narrow roadway in Area 2 with limited space to maneuver into backin sites.

One pull-thru site was so tight to the roadway, their trailer was partially on the road! Area 2 campground sites have no privacy from any other camp sites

Site 211 table, fire pit with cooking grate and lantern pole are located opposite side of the trailer door

Area 2 restroom/shower building serves 58 campsites and it shows it! Restroom facility badly needing some TLC, cleaning and maintenance Women’s restroom had 3 toilets and 2 sinks; men’s had 2 toilets and 1 urinal

      Tyler State Park Campground

      A little of everything

One of my fave trips. I stayed here for free by decorating my camper during the Christmas season. The trails are nice rolling hills around the little lake. The city of Tyler is also cute to explore, especially the rose gardens. Loved the changing colors with the leaves.

    Guide to Tyler

Tyler State Park and surrounding campgrounds offer glamping options set among East Texas pine forests approximately 100 miles east of Dallas. The region features warm summers with temperatures often exceeding 95°F and mild winters with occasional freezes. Camping areas range from densely wooded sites to lakeside accommodations with varying degrees of shade.

    What to do

Water activities on smaller lakes: Tyler State Park maintains a spring-fed lake where visitors can swim in designated areas. "The lake was perfect and had a nice beach. We were able to rent kayaks and paddle boats," reports Sarah J. who enjoyed family time at Tyler State Park Campground.

Hiking through pine forests: Trails wind through tall pines offering options for various skill levels. "Sites are good but trails for biking and hiking are great!!" notes Jill C. about Tyler State Park. Meanwhile, at Martin Creek Lake State Park, Shane H. mentions, "Nice short distance hiking trail, I enjoyed quite a bit."

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes in the area provide fishing access. At Lake Holbrook Park, Julie G. describes it as a "Sandy lake, oaks, bathroom, dock, ramp... free camp." Dianne C. from Tyler State Park adds, "The lake is perfect for kayaking and fishing from one of several docks."

    What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Campers frequently mention the cleanliness of accommodations. Karen M. appreciates Music Springs, saying, "The bathrooms and shower are clean, there's a community kitchen that has a microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator. The whole place is decorated very nicely."

Family-friendly atmosphere: Parents appreciate the recreational options for children. Becca H. at Martin Creek Lake State Park notes, "Pretty cool playground, trails to explore, covered picnic tables in the swim area, nice fishing piers. A really cool SP."

Concrete pad sites: Many RV sites feature level concrete pads. At The Boulders at Lake Tyler, Brianna B. explains, "The grounds were clean and well maintained. Concrete sites made setup and leveling super easy. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful."

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular sites fill quickly during peak seasons. Tim H. describes Tyler State Park as "Nestled in the piney woods, Great Lake, MTB, hiking and good facilities." Tammie L. adds, "Great little lake to fish, kayak, swim and hike! Hard to get reservations because it is so popular!"

Weather considerations: East Texas experiences hot, humid summers and occasional winter freezes. Plan accordingly with appropriate gear and clothing for seasonal conditions.

Proximity to services: Most glamping close to Tyler, Texas offers convenient access to nearby towns. Larry L. notes Mineola Civic Center and RV Park is "Walking distance of big grocery store. 15 miles from Lake Fork."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-focused activities: Look for glamping locations with designated children's areas. "The playground is one of the best I've seen at the state parks we've been to!" shares Becca H. about Tyler State Park.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children enjoy spotting local wildlife. At Tyler State Park, Myc C. warns, "Be careful for raccoons saw a lot of them while here!"

Water safety planning: Lakes provide swimming opportunities but require supervision. Peter F. from Tyler State Park mentions, "Day use swimming area can get crowded on the weekends but there's plenty of quieter access points."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Choose sites based on your specific needs and preferences. Lori C. at Martin Creek Lake State Park shares, "Site 40 was wooded and very spacious. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring and ours had water and electric. There was a dump station available."

Hookup availability: RV sites offer various levels of service. Gregg C. describes Mineola Civic Center and RV Park: "The sites are level concrete pads with full hookups. Wifi is good and Verizon, T Mobile and AT&T work well."

Access information: Some campgrounds have specific access challenges. At Lake Holbrook Park, Daisee Mae S. cautions, "The road in isn't bad but it's pretty dippy in some spots so if you have a large vehicle take it slow."
