    History and Lodging

The entire park was well maintained. The restrooms and showers were modern, neat and clean. The historical site was closed for tours on the day that we stayed, but we were able to walk around the site and visit buildings. The signs on the outside of the structures were very informative and we were able to peek in the windows to experience life during those times.

Our stay in Site 41 was perfect for solitude and comfort.  No bright lights from other RVs. There was only 1 other RV in this section. The partially shaded site had electricity and water.  It is located quite a distance from the restroom/shower area.

This campground offers fun, history and camping all in one place!

    Nice state park

Beautiful park with great trails and stunning views of the lake. Lots of trees and grassy areas. Bathrooms are clean but older for sure. Site was in the smaller side for RVs and not the most level.

Nice state park just NW of Ft Worth

Stayed here when passing through on way to points further west. Nice state park with hiking and historic buildings to see. Our site 5 was fairly private and set apart from some of the other sites that are bunched together along the road.

    Don't expect a quiet night's sleep

Tent sites are walk-in to the other side of the end of the lake, and can be pretty rickety with loose rocks getting there. Was good practice for backpacking, since parking is closeby, but not very convenient. P008 is probably the only site suitable for hammock camping. Everything else is flat and exposed, next to the shore.

We were woken up by loud boats trolling the shore and men shouting around midnight both nights we were there, and could hear conversations from the RV area.

    Another great Texas State Park

Even though a tornado touched down in the nearby small town of Jacksboro during my stay, I enjoyed this state park and all it has to offer. Thankfully no one was killed, although there was a great deal of property damage. It was humbling to see mother nature in all her fury! I was in site 35 which had water and electric (30 amp), no sewer hookups, but dump in the state park. This site backed up to Lost Creek and was set up on the rocky hillside with access to the Rumbling Spring trail right from the site.

The campsites on this side of the creek are spaced fairly well apart with green space between them. I was spoiled for 3 days as one of only 2 campers in this section. This is when the wildlife came out. I saw deer and wild turkey every evening, an armadillo and lots of birds.

The trails are great with something for everyone. I especially enjoyed the Trailway which was well maintained crushed gravel and made for an easy ride into Jacksboro and beyond to the reservoir.  Nice points of interest along the way.

Not to be missed is the fort which offers self guided tours through the open buildings at specific times only (at the time I was there). If you don't go at the tour time, then the buildings are closed, expect for the old barracks restrooms.

The park has a small store and there's trout fishing in the quarry lake. I'll definitely return. Shout out to the park rangers who went above and beyond during the bad weather!

    Gem close to DFW

We weren’t expecting much from this park other than a place to test out our new RV. We were greeted by a very friendly Park staff. The RV site and hookups were in great condition. Bathhouse and other areas were clean and easily accessible. Would love to come again.

    1st road-trip!

This park was definitely out in the middle of nowhere, with a long peaceful drive full of wildlife. We made it to the park entrance, check in was quick. We arrived on a week day and they ranger informed us the camp store was closed until weekend and no firewood. Closest store with firewood was 30min away. They lake was beautiful. We were right beside the restroom and shower facilities which was great! We came to stay for one night, we had a roof top tent so the site we had was nice and would make a perfect side for a RV but for us it could’ve been wider for our ladder but we were close to the restroom which we wanted. The restrooms were clean, could use a little update, and water was warm but not hot. Lots of wildlife around! I would stay again but I don’t think it’s the best place to go for a winter camping trip. Thank you Texas state parks!

    Great camping and rock climbing

Tent camped at site 104. Good amount of space on this site, but do your research. Some of the sites there are fairly small. Sites are spaced out well. Clean restrooms and showers. Saw a few deer and could hear coyotes in the distance at night. There is rock climbing and a small swim beach on the other side of the lake and lots of places to go fishing. The trails are very rocky and not always easy to navigate, but there is so much there to explore.

    Pretty and nice.

No WiFi from the RV.  You have to go to the Clubhouse to use it.  When I was there, the internet was down due to a storm prior to my arrival.  I stayed in Section 3 which has full hookups.  There was 1 spot open at the end of the line.  Limited shade.  They charged $50 a night for full hookups and no internet.  If you select a 50A site, they charge you an additional $3 for that whether you use it or not.  The park is huge, the road is long and paved/gravel.  The speed limit is 35mph but I didn't get over 15 or 20 mph because of the holes.  The facilities are well maintained and clean.  Grass was mowed etc.  Sites are sort of level side to side, a bit too far out for me to just take it but way off fore and aft.  If the internet had been working (not their fault) I would have given it at least 4 and maybe 5 stars.

    Lakeside Campsite

Large RV park with many amenities and activities. I tent camped and cooked out the back of the Jeep at a back-in RV site that sure seemed to be the best spot of them all. The site itself was really large with huge old trees for hammocks. We had our own private access to the lake that was secluded by trees at our site. Picnic table and fire ring. The tent only sites was basically a big field with a parking lot nearby. I prefer to park next to my tent since my kitchen is part of the Jeep so the tent only site didn’t work for me.

We had plenty of space to spread out and relax. Rented a pontoon and saw Hell's gates worth the stop. Spent most of the time swimming and fishing from shore. This is one of the clearer lakes in Texas.

Lake mineral wells state park was great for biking, hiking, swimming and fishing. We had something fun for all 6 of us. My husband and I stayed in our tent, while rest of family stayed in their RV. It has been a very rainy month in Texas so some trails were closed. The camp store was awesome.we didn’t take advantage of the kayak or canoe rentals, but the prices were reasonable. Bathrooms, while a little dated were clean and had soap!

    Bet it’s great in summer!

We stayed here January 26 -31, 2021 on the first stop of a 3 month escape from Northern Wisconsin winter. I’m guessing it’s great when it’s warm and you have a boat. It was always windy. Concessions store closed for remodeling. Construction on cabin near our site. Nice bathrooms, shower water not super hot. Nice trails and tons of birds. A bunch of guys cleaning their catfish at a cleaning station near our site. Left a ton of carcasses that the rangers cleaned up. If you plan to use Texas state parks, get the pass as it will save you lots of money!

    Google Maps needs Help

Caution- Google Maps has no idea where the entrance to this campground is. Entry was very easy and the Ranger on duty was extremely helpful. There is lot's of space in Section 1 but through out the campground there are not very many full hookup sites.

Pros: Nice patio pads at most sites, Clean picnic tables, BBQ's were very clean and maintained, Very clean public bathrooms/spaces, Good Cell service, When not crowded plenty of space between sites

Cons: Minimal shade trees, Lake access very rocky, lot's of"personal sites", Most sites are not gravel so you are setting up in grass, Pool/hot tub closed due to broken equipment from the freeze. Roads in could use some help.

Overall the campground had a very spacious feel and they have done a really nice job of keeping the area landscaped.

Equestrian camp small but good location near fort

We stayed one night at the equestrian camp on our way through the area. We prefer leaving the equestrian spots for horse owners but it was the last one available in the park. Although, of the 5 sites in this loop, none of us had horses!

With only a couple of small pens and not much space, we could see why equestrians might not flock here. Hard to say from one night though.

The sites are long and narrow without much space between them. Road nosie is noticeable during the day but quiet at night.

There are no bathroom facilities in this loop, so be aware of that. There is a small dumpster available. The bathroom/shower facilities and dump station are down the road at the main campground. You do have 20-, 39- and 50-amp electric plus water hookup at your site.

The good part about this loop is that you're camping within site of the historic Fort Richardson and visiting the grounds is a short walk. The buildings are only open from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but you're welcome to wander the grounds and look in the windows. Make sure you grab a self-guided your brochure at check-in.

This was fine for a night or two, but for longer we'd encourage a stay at the main campground instead.

Phone service was good: Verizon 4 bars / T-Mobile 4 bars.

    Great campground on the lake

We so enjoyed our stay here! Right on the water and the campgrounds are spaced out enough that you are not right on top of each other. There is a convenience store on site that has most anything you need. There is also a Men’s and Women’s bathrooms with two shower stalls (in the women’s at least) - but no family bathroom setup. Everything was pretty basic, as you would expect at a state park.

Looks like fun in the summer

We arrived late  December and it was chilly. Sites with full hook up are limited, but even with annuals are still possible. One thing though, we found a great site (124 ) very close to the water which is a plus for us as my wife is disabled and needs a walker so if the water is too far it becomes and issue, but had to pay $3 more a night due to it being as they said a limited 50 amp service. Even though we are 30, still the cost is $3. With my wife issue it is a no brainer for us. All in all, the campground was quite, you can see when it is summertime, its a wonderful place to bring the family as it has a huge area for kid activities, family gathering and more.

Have not stayed overnight here yet due to covid19 restrictions. But day pass use and hiking. Trails are mostly easy, some are completely flat and paved. One trail was nice, moderate difficulty and unpaved. Lots of history here but nothing was open for self guided tours yet. Nice fishing hole in front reservoir.
