Best Cabin Camping near Richmond, TX

Several cabin accommodations are available within a short drive of Richmond, Texas, primarily at state parks and private RV resorts. Brazos Bend State Park Campground in nearby Needville offers rustic cabin options with basic amenities, while Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground provides screened shelters and a rustic cabin with electricity and water. Highway 6 RV Resort, Shiloh RV Park, and Lakeview RV Resort all feature cabin rentals with more modern conveniences including air conditioning and private bathrooms. Most park cabins include electricity, lighting, and sometimes heating but have varying levels of furnishings. "The shelter came with a locking door, although I don't think anyone would bother you anyway. The park was nice and quiet and the weather was cold, I absolutely loved it," noted one visitor about the screened shelters at Stephen F. Austin State Park.

Cabin options range from basic screened shelters to fully-furnished accommodations depending on the location. Stephen F. Austin State Park offers rustic cabins with amenities for around $80-200 per night, while private RV resorts typically provide more hotel-like cabin experiences with higher prices but more conveniences. Most state park cabins require advance reservations, especially during peak seasons from spring through fall. Pet policies vary by location, with some cabins allowing pets while others restrict them entirely. A camper mentioned, "We stayed in one of the cabins and it was super cozy and convenient," when describing their experience at a resort cabin near Houston.

Most basic cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary widely, from simple fire rings with grill grates at state park cabins to full kitchenettes in resort cabins. Brazos Bend State Park sells firewood via an honor system for those planning to cook outdoors. The more developed cabins at private RV resorts typically include more amenities but at higher prices. Nearby towns like Sealy (about 8 miles from Stephen F. Austin State Park) offer grocery stores and supplies for cabin campers who need to stock up. One reviewer noted, "The Park entrance has a little Store and the town of Sealy is just a few miles away should you need supplies."

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Pleasant Texas State Park

We had a really nice relaxing stay at Stephen F Austin State Park near San Filepe, Texas. Great little state park easily accessed from I-10. The 38 RV sites are all asphalt pad pull throughs with 30/15 amp electric, water and sewer complete with concrete pad for table, fire pit, lantern and all well spaced for plenty of privacy...big rig friendly. They have an additional 39 tent only sites with water and 25 primitive. Screened shelters are reservable for tent camping with 20 amp electric and water plus one rustic cabin with amenities. There is a$5 daily entrance fee in addition to camping fees. The bathhouse facilities are brand new. It's a small park but they do have five miles of trails for hiking/biking with views of the Brazos River. We enjoyed the wildlife; deer strolling in the campground every morning and evening, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, a bobcat and numerous owls. They have a Nature Center; however it was not open during our visit. The park office has a small store with sundries and park souvenirs. The nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site tells the story of early settlers to Texas and is worth a visit. We made a run to the nearby town of Sealy to do a much needed laundry stop...small community with grocery, dining and fuel to meet most needs. Brazos Bend State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Kameng Boots by Mishmi Takin at Brazos Bend State Park

    Campground Review

It's incredible that I was born and raised in Houston and have lived here the past four years but haven't made it out to Brazos Bend State Park until now! A quick, 45 minute drive southwest will get you out of the concrete jungle that is the sprawling Space City metropolis and into one of the lushest, greenest parts of Texas. Brazos Bend is a "Nature Lover's Paradise" - there is abundant wildlife. There is great fishing, ample bird watching, and lots and lots of alligators (!). Lots of trails for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. The George Observatory is a pretty amazing feature of this park (but only open Saturdays).

We arrived at Brazos Bend on a Friday afternoon and were able to walk-in no problem. Walk-in rate is $12/day + the daily park entrance fee ($5 for adults, free for kids). I have a Texas State Parks Pass so we didn't have to pay the entrance fees (saved us $40 for two nights of camping!). Additionally there were several other great options including: Full-Site RV hook-up ($25/night), Standard Camping ($20/night, incl. water & electricity), and 14 Cabins ($80-200/night but have everything you could ever need or want).

We did a lot of nature walks, game playing, and swimming during our two days at Brazos Bend State Park. Summer is probably not the best time to visit any park in Texas - its hot and muggy and the mosquitos are out in full force. Bring your DEET. Seriously. Despite that though, we were very pleasantly surprised by the amenities (swimming pool, screened in picnic tables, fire pits, and tent pads!)

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - this past weekend at Brazos Bend I tested out the Kameng Mid eVent Waterproof Hiking Boot by Mishmi Takin.

These boots have got it all.

First, these boots are hella comfortable! I was blown away how comfortable they were right out of the box. Over the years, I've owned many pairs of hiking boots and they all required a significant break-in period. Not these!

Second, they're waterproof AND breathable. Not water resistant, like actually water proof.

Third, the look great. All 3 color schemes are fantastic I had a tough time choosing between green, grey and orange.

Fourth, so lightweight. These only weigh 1.5lbs so even though they are boots, they won't weigh you down.

    5/5 Would Recommend.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Nice, Kind of Pricy

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

    Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

    Lakeview RV Resort

    Rude Staff

I stayed here for 3 months and the manager Robert was very biased and unhospitable towards me the entire time. So I complained to the district manager Marty and told him I would not be extending my stay and would leave at end of month. He agreed and said I would get back my $50 deposit which is required for 5 days notice to move out (I was giving 2 weeks notice which is much more than the required 5 days). Upon checking out at the end of my stay Robert of course did not refund my $50 forcing me to call Marty again (Will update if I ever get my $50 back). On the final email they sent me with my electricity usage I noticed they changed my name to BLACKLIST and when I asked Marty he said 'correct you will never stay at one of our resorts again since you seemed unhappy' so to sum it up if you complain aboout how they treat you; you will be Blacklisted and have to fight for your deposit back.

*not kid friendly *not pet friendly *not people friendly *very very noisy *pool failed inspection and water seems to be chemically inbalanced even after reopening (water smells rotten) *hot tub jets do not work *dog yard is not cleaned

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Well Equipped Campsites

We made a reservation for a tent site and found the rate very reasonable. Sites are well equipped with water, a fire pit with grill grate, picnic table, and pole to hang food if necessary. Bathrooms and dumpster area are clean and well lit. The park hosts were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the short trails that were accessible from the campsite. Saw deer in the camp area and enjoyed (mostly) watching the big yellow garden spiders building their webs next to the trail in the morning.

Stephen F Austin State Park, A Must Visit

OK, this was my second visit to a Texas State Park. Simply said, I was blown away with this park. Driving in, deer scattered the landscape. Like my trip to Huntsville State Park, I opted for a screened shelter. The protection from the elements were well worth the $122.50 I paid for four nights. With electric/water, I was very comfortable and was able to use my electric heater in my tent. The shelter came with a locking door, although I don't think anyone would bother you anyway. There are some nice trails, including one that will take you to the Brazos River. The park was nice and quiet and the weather was cold, I absolutely loved it. The Park entrance has a little Store and the town of Sealy is just a few miles away should you need supplies. The staff was remarkably helpful and courteous. I really enjoyed the peace of this park, the Solitude and good energy force you to take in it's grandeur. Since it was freezing cold, (which I loved) the extremely clean bathrooms, with showers would be a welcome site. I was surprised how clean the facility was, it was even heated. I definitely plan on returning to the park, maybe gonna try out the cabin.

    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

    Excellent campground.

This is an excellent campground. In my opinion, the camper pads are really nice. Long and wide can accommodate small or large campers and motorhomes. They are fire rings picnic tables. There's firewood for sale, lots of wildlife sightings. I got 5G network with T-MOBILE service and excellent television reception. The bathrooms and showers are really clean.

Guide to Richmond

Cabins near Richmond, Texas can be found throughout several state parks and RV resorts within a 30-mile radius. The area has a humid subtropical climate with average summer temperatures reaching 95°F and winter lows around 45°F. Most cabin accommodations are situated among post oak and pine forests that characterize this transitional zone between coastal plains and the central Texas hill country.

What to do

Observatory stargazing: At Brazos Bend State Park Campground, the observatory is a major attraction for cabin guests. "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!" reports Kim B. The park has astronomy enthusiasts who often share their equipment on clear nights.

Wildlife photography: The area's diverse ecosystems create excellent photography opportunities, particularly for alligator viewing. "If you go on a moderate temperature day (this is the key. If it is too hot or cold you won't see Gators) you can see literally dozens of massive alligators. We are talking 6 feet long and right on the pathway," says Ashley C. about her experience at Brazos Bend.

Fishing opportunities: Several cabin rental locations offer fishing access. "The park was nice and quiet and the weather was cold, I absolutely loved it," notes a visitor about Stephen F. Austin State Park. Many cabin sites are situated near stocked ponds or river access points with catfish and bass.

What campers like

Shaded sites: Mature trees provide relief from Texas heat at Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground. "Very wooded, tons of wildlife," reports Andrew C. The park features Spanish moss-draped trees throughout camping areas, providing natural cooling for cabin sites.

Cabin proximity to trails: Many campers appreciate trail access directly from cabin areas. "Fun little campground in the river! Great for hikes in the shady trees, or even a bike ride!" explains Devin P. Most cabin rentals are positioned with easy access to hiking trails ranging from 0.5 to 3 miles in length.

Clean facilities: Newer cabin rentals at Highway 6 RV Resort receive high marks for cleanliness. "A bit on the pricier side, but it is very well managed and well kept. Pool is clean, bathrooms are clean, laundry room clean and looked like all the machines worked," says Al09 S. Most resort cabins feature daily housekeeping services.

What you should know

Seasonal pest considerations: Mosquitos can be problematic in warmer months. "If you go in the summer you need to watch out for mosquitoes," warns joseph P. about Brazos Bend State Park. Cabin guests should pack repellent, particularly for evening activities.

Reservation timing: Advance booking is essential, especially for weekend stays. "Staff is awesome and helped us get in for a late check in," notes Taylor T. about Stephen F. Austin State Park, highlighting their accommodation of last-minute arrivals when possible.

Wildlife proximity: Shiloh RV Park offers unique animal encounters. "There is also a mommy and her teenager donkeys who like carrots and apples," mentions Missy C. Cabins near wildlife viewing areas may experience animal sounds throughout night hours.

Tips for camping with families

Observatory programs: Families enjoy educational programs at George Observatory. "There's always plenty of stargazers up there that love to share their equipment, you can also pay for the big telescopes," explains Rebecca about Brazos Bend State Park. Programs typically run Friday and Saturday evenings from 7-10 PM.

Nature center visits: Educational facilities enhance family experiences. "There is a small nature centre where you can pet baby Gators and learn about them," notes Ashley C. Most nature centers operate 9 AM-5 PM daily with free admission for cabin guests.

Cabin selection strategies: For families with young children, specific cabin locations matter. "We chose site 72 and it worked really well. Just be aware if your going with a group, the big sites do not have much shade," advises Brittany S. about camping at Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground.

Tips from RVers

Cabin alternatives: Many RV sites offer more privacy than standard cabins. "The Park entrance has a little Store and the town of Sealy is just a few miles away should you need supplies," notes a reviewer about nearby resources for campers. Small convenience stores typically stock essentials like firewood, ice and basic groceries.

Resort amenities: Lakeview RV Resort offers hotel-quality amenities for cabin guests. "The pool area looks like a pool you would see at a hotel. The gym was still closed as was the clubhouse," describes Holly D. Resort-style cabins typically include access to fitness centers, pools and clubhouse facilities.

Site spacing: Adequate spacing between cabins varies by property. "Pull throughs are long and wide can accommodate small or large campers and motorhomes," explains Red S. about camping at Brazos Bend. Premium cabin sites typically offer 20-30 feet of separation between units.
