Limited horse-friendly camping exists near Forney, Texas, with only a few options to accommodate equestrians. East Fork Park Campground features equestrian-designated sites with adequate space for both horse trailers and camping equipment. The sites are positioned on the shores of Lake Lavon, providing access to water for horses. While the campground has basic utilities with water and electric hookups, equestrians should note the grounds can become muddy after rain, potentially creating challenging conditions for horses. Most sites have aging asphalt pads with significant drop-offs that require careful navigation when moving horses between trailer and campsite.

Brockdale Park offers an alternative with its large equestrian trails and boat launch area. The park primarily serves as a trailhead for riders rather than an overnight camping destination. COE Lavon Lake Lavonia provides another option with sites that have previously accommodated horses, including one location with horse stables that campers have used for tent placement during inclement weather. The grass is frequently overgrown at these facilities, creating both grazing opportunities and potential hazard concerns for horses. Riders should call ahead to confirm current equestrian policies, as horse accommodations are limited and not consistently maintained throughout the year. Most facilities require riders to bring portable corrals or highlines as permanent equine containment systems are not standard amenities.

      Brockdale Park

      Not a campsite

Equestrian trail and boat launch. This is big parking lot for a boat launch on Lake Lavon and a large Equestrian trail. No camping sites but we have done a picnic here. It’s a few minutes from our home.

      COE Lavon Lake Lavonia

      Great for something close by

Nothing to knock you socks off, but it’s a great campsite close to home and nice for a quick getaway. Has the feel of being somewhat remote since it’s out by the lake.

We’ve camped in the site with the horse stables and put the tents with questionable rain flys in the horse stable.

      East Fork Park Campground

      Not a favorite

I found this park to be maintained poorly. The sites are close together with little shade and are all in a big, level circle with limited to no view of the lake itself. When we were there the grass was at least a foot high, creating no play space for the kids in the ample open areas.  There is an area with equestrian sites. Overall, it seems more of a day-use, non-appealing area.

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

One of my least favorite Texas State Parks To DAte

St Patrick’s Day 2018 we head out to Cedar Hill State Park on the banks of Joe Pool Lake. Cedar Hill State Park is one big Texas State Park! With over 300 campsites you are sure to find one to your liking! A visit to the historical Penn Farm, heavy spring rains and lots of paved roads for scooting make this visit to Cedar Hill State Park a truly unique Texas State Park Visit for the Dude RV crew!

There are 5 camping loops in this park! If you are wanting a lakeside campsite there are many options. The 3 loops on the north end of the park are close to the very busy road so there is road noise all the time.

The Penn FArm exhibit is very cool for the whole family and is ADA compliant but a bit on the rough side for handicap scooters.

The day use area was in need of some work on my visit but I think the day use area has since been rebuilt.

You can see the several videos of my visit on my YouTube...DudeRV

      American RV Park

This is a city RV Park

This is mainly a city RV/camper campsite that sits right on the outskirts of the town of Corsicana. Very close to Navarro College. So if you wanted to visit the college or the town of Corsicana this would be a great RV site. No views of anything except the highway. Not a vacation site, more of a need to stop for awhile site.

      East Fork Park Campground

      East Fork state park

The Good, level, spacious campsites with an awning over the picnic table. Great lay out for campsites. The Lake Lavon was beautiful. The not so good, the restrooms were old and not well kept up. They were not heated which probably doesn't matter most of the time in Texas but when we were there it was 20 degrees. Secondly there is dog poop everywhere, it seems that every time I stepped off of the pavement I had to clean dog crap out of my shoes.

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

      Swimming hole close to Dallas

Cedar Hill State Park, Cedar Hill, TX Site# 42

Cedar Hill State Park is only 10 miles southwest of Dallas, but its topography will remind you of the Texas Hill Country. The park is situated on the shores of Joe Pool Lake and it features 30 primitive hike-in camp sites, over 300 wooded modern sites, and more than 1,200 acres of mountain bike terrain. The park also offers multiple boat ramps, kayak rentals, and a swimming beach.

      Waxahachie Creek Park

      Close to Nature

I wish I could rate this campground higher because it was so peaceful with quite a bit of bushy vegetation to provide a small measure of privacy between sites. This is as close to nature as one can get in a campground!  There was poison ivy on the trees next to us and in the mowed ground around the campsite.  There were so many butterflies, flies, and other flying insects on the sunny side of our RV that it made entering and exiting through the sliding door very difficult. And, the ANTS! After one night in our site, the ants had formed an active trail to the top of our RV. Consequently, we had ants inside the RV!

The roads inside the campground need to be repaved.

The camp host and the park ranger were both very friendly and informative.

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

      Modern and quiet

Campsites are modern and very well shaded. They offer water access, electricity, are near facilities, have tables and fire pits. Many of the sites overlook the lake or have easy access to the lake. The area is unique because it is within minutes from Dallas but offers the quiet and solitude that an area farther away from a major city would provide. The trails in this area are fantastic, great for mountain biking, trail running, hiking with small children, etc… It does get relatively dry and hot during the summer, and despite the abundance of trees the trails remain relatively exposed to the sun. There are swimming areas available. If you forget something you have easy and relatively quick access to shopping.

This was our first camping trip as a family, we have learned a lot about camping since staying at this park a few years ago. We do regularly visit but don't camp here often.

    Guide to Forney

Equestrian camping options near Forney, Texas center around Lake Lavon and the surrounding Army Corps of Engineers parks. Located in the eastern Dallas metroplex area, the terrain features gently rolling hills and open grasslands that provide varied riding terrain. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 95°F, requiring early morning or evening rides during peak season.

    What to do

Lake activities at High View Park: Equestrians can combine camping with lake activities at High View Park on Bardwell Lake. "We stayed in site 40 on our way south. The site was large and right by the water," notes Julie B. Multiple riders have commented on the accessibility to water. "Beautiful lake views and tons of grass. My dog loved going for runs through the grass (while on her leash)," says Dani K.

Riding trails exploration: Cedar Hill State Park Campground offers trail riding opportunities in a natural setting. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots," explains Michael C. The park's layout creates a buffer between riding areas and camping zones, reducing traffic concerns for horses.

Trailer parking access: Some parks provide extra-wide parking areas specifically for horse trailers. "Local sheriff's dept and park ranger made several trips through the park which made it feel secure," reports Derrick A. about High View, mentioning the added security which benefits those traveling with valuable horses and equipment.

    What campers like

Spacious sites for equipment: East Fork Park Campground receives praise for site layout. "The sites are fairly well dispersed with water and electric at each," explains Dennis G. This configuration provides adequate spacing for horse equipment. Another camper notes, "There is plenty of space between sites, but no trees so not a lot of privacy," which benefits equestrians needing open space.

Lake views while camping: Mott Park delivers scenic water views. "Our site #29 was nice and shady and panoramic view of lake," shares Debra M. The setting creates a relaxing environment after trail rides. "I enjoyed the rain and the view it was very relaxing," adds Wahine K., highlighting the calming atmosphere.

Security features: Regular patrols benefit those camping with horses. "Even tho it rained quite a bit we still enjoyed ourselves. Local sheriff's dept and park ranger made several trips through the park which made it feel secure," mentions Derrick A. This security presence helps protect valuable equestrian equipment.

    What you should know

Ground condition challenges: Preparing for muddy conditions is essential. "When it rains, water pours into site and erodes area quickly and will fill your mat etc with orange clay," warns TJ & Laura S. about their experience at Loyd Park.

Grass maintenance varies: "Great campground, electric and water. Only issue is the grass is always one high so bring a weed whip," advises Suzann E. at East Fork Park. This affects grazing quality for horses and creates pest concerns. "Man, this would have been a great little camp ground if the grass wasn't so overgrown. Nothing like taking a nice shower and then having to walk back to your campsite in 2 feet of grass and get bit up by all the bugs in the grass!" adds Jenny S.

Site leveling requirements: "The pad has definitely broken up over time and isn't level. The fire pit is also sitting at an angle," reports Melanie and Doug G. This can create challenges for safely positioning horse trailers and establishing stable temporary corrals.

Gate restrictions: "Gates lock at 10 pm. We couldn't get in," warns Reagan K. about High View Park. This timing restriction affects late arrivals with horses in tow. Always check gate policies when planning equestrian camping trips.

    Tips for camping with families

Wildlife awareness: COE Lavon Lake Lavonia offers natural surroundings but requires preparation. "Overnighted here returning home from a longer trip. It was okay for what I was doing, but I would never choose to camp here as a destination as a tent camper," shares Veronica S. Families should prepare for encounters with native Texas wildlife, including fire ants.

Bathroom facilities: When camping with children and horses, bathroom access becomes crucial. "Each bathroom (2 per building) was a single occupant bathroom with a locking door. In the bathroom was a sink, a toilet, a hand dryer, and a shower with two nozzles at different heights (tall and short)," notes Veronica S. about Lavonia.

Water access planning: "Swimming area real nice," comments Elizabeth C. about High View Park. Families should plan horse activities separate from swimming areas. Most parks segment these areas for safety reasons.

Seasonal booking strategy: "It feels like a state park, but run by the city. All sites are back in and allow for tent campers," explains John B. about Loyd Park. Families should book well in advance during summer months when combining equestrian and family camping activities.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for horse trailers: "Larger rigs are more accommodated next to the lake. But call ahead to see which sites have 50 amp, you'll need it in summer time," advises John B. about Loyd Park. This guidance helps position horse trailers with adequate power and space.

Road condition awareness: "View was great and camp hosts were very friendly but the roads are horrible!" warns Mia D. about East Fork Park. Careful driving is required when towing horse trailers on deteriorating campground roads.

Levelness considerations: "The sites weren't bad and ours was pretty level," notes Mia D., which is essential information for safely positioning horse trailers and temporary corrals at East Fork Park.
