Coastal areas within driving distance of Edna, Texas offer several tent camping options with unique waterfront settings. Magnolia Beach, located between Port Lavaca and Port O'Connor, provides free primitive tent camping directly on a mile-long stretch of Gulf Coast shoreline. Tent campers can access walk-in sites at Goliad State Park's Vaquero and Longhorn Camping Areas, approximately 35 miles northwest of Edna. Hollywood Bottom Park in Wharton offers basic tent-only camping along the Colorado River, with just four primitive sites available for overnight stays.

Tent camping surfaces vary significantly across these locations. Magnolia Beach features a hard-packed shell and sand surface that requires protective footwear but provides stable ground for tent setup. According to campers, strong, low-profile tents are recommended due to persistent coastal winds. The beach has basic amenities including flush toilets, cold outdoor showers, covered picnic pavilions, and trash receptacles. A strict 14-day stay limit applies. At Goliad State Park, tent campsites include more developed facilities with shaded sites, fire rings, and access to water. Hollywood Bottom Park offers minimal amenities with just picnic tables and grills at each of its four tent sites.

In winter months, tent campers report fewer crowds at Magnolia Beach, creating a more peaceful backcountry tent camping experience. One visitor noted, "Most tent campers set up at one of the picnic pavilions where there is a bit more beach grass." The shell-covered beach provides opportunities for fishing from a nearby pier, shell collecting, and wildlife observation including seabirds and occasional dolphins. Campers should be prepared for potentially harsh weather conditions, as another camper reported, "During fair weather this beach is great, but we experienced a cold front that was very difficult with treacherous wind coming off the bay." At Goliad State Park, tent-only camping areas provide access to shady trails along the river and historic sites within a more protected inland setting.

      Magnolia Beach

      Free boondocking (dry camping) beach

Located between Port Lavaca and Port O'connor, TX. A mile or so of no-fee camping. No designated sites. Hard packed sand/sea shell surface, with paved access roads. Beach is pretty clean but beach appropriate footware is required. There is a bath house with free lavatories. We were there in August 2019 and March 2020 and the inside showers (4) were locked. There is a free use outside shower. There are picnic tables covered with 4 open sided concrete shelters. There are trash barrels in front of all the shelters. The picinic shelter closest to the rest rooms is wheelchair accessable. No electric, sewer or water sites. This is a very windy place. If you tent camp, low profile strong tents are recommended. I've seen many RVs with generators, PV solar arrays and wind turbines. There are small convience stores and bait and tackle stores nearby. There is a fishing pier towards the Southern part of the beach. A few RV campgrounds in the area. It is kept pretty clean. In the warmer months the crabs like to hide in the bathrooms out of the sun. Don't be alarmed, they stay away from people. Don't miss the Camel memorial at the Southernmost entrance. There is a Geocache in the area.

Jacales Camping Area — Goliad State Park

      Historical Park

This Texas State Park is located in Goliad Texas. This is in the south central area of the state between Victoria and Austin on Highway 183. The park has some great historical sites including a 16th century Spanish mission. The campground is situated along the San Antonio River. You can kayak along the 6 mile long kayak paddle trail or try your luck at fishing. The campground is well maintained and offers a nice range of sites from tent to RVs and small cabins. The sites are located along the river with no privacy. They have some walk in tent sites as well. The town of Goliad is a hidden gem with a rich history and some cool antique shops and cafes. We plan to stop again here on our next trip to the coast.

      Texana Park & Campground

      Wildlife, fishing, kayaking

Sites are very spacious, each has its own picnic table on a concrete pad. Lots of privacy, most sites are separated by 15' widths of trees and shrubs which act as a privacy wall. There is a little climbing playground for little ones. Fishing piers and a nature center currently being built and it is going to be huge! We've been here three days and have seen 4 armadillos, 5 squirrels, 7 deer and 1 raccoon. The neighbor said she has camped here 6 times and only seen 1 teeny tiny gator. Only thing missing for my likes is a swimming pool. You can't get into this water, pretty murky and lily pads

Matagorda Bay Nature and RV Park

      Colorado River Waterfront Camping

      Pros:

      • Quick and friendly check-in

.• Large parking area that is rig-friendly for check-in.

      • Knowledgeable park personnel

      • Nature center with interactive exhibits and gift shop

      • Well maintained. Daily we saw the camp hosts working diligently, even hosing down and scrubbing bird poop from campsites.

      • Saturday morning 1.5 hour guided Gulf beach walk($5/pp) by Paige and Whitley. Paige knew her“stuff” as she was pelted continuously with questions and she never missed a beat!

      • Complimentary early Saturday morning coffee and pastries.

      • Along the Colorado River but you can hear ocean roar where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico.

      • Level concrete parking pad surrounded by grass. Back-ins and drive-thrus.

      • Two sewer hook-up outlets.

      • Large concrete picnic table.

      • Very nice and clean toilets/shower building in an elevated building accessible by a ramp. Must have code to enter.

      • Laundry facility in toilet/shower building with code entry.

      • Nice Colorado River fishing piers with fish cleaning tables with freshwater spigot and a super pier over the beach/ocean.

      • Primo sunsets

      • Bay City, 20-minute drive, for the closest Walmart, HEB and other retailers and restaurants.

      Cons:

      • LCRA $6 on-line reservation fee.

      • Absolutely no trees or vegetation between sites which equals NO SHADE and NO PRIVACY.

      • Ocean“breeze” made it impossible to deploy trailer awning.

      • No fire pits, but if you bring your own with a screen cover, you may have a fire, if you bring wood as no wood is sold at this park.

      • NOT A DARK SKY FRIENDLY CAMPGROUND due to way too many street lights throughout the campground, along the river bank and on the fishing piers.  This would be a 5 star campground if there was more darkness!

      • Complimentary LCRA WIFI was weak and unreliable.

      • When the ocean"breeze" died down and the humidity was up, we were attacked by swarms of mosquitos which required us to heavily apply repellent in mid-February

      • Not much in the town of Matagorda, basically a fishing village, and of those businesses, not many operating in mid-February.

Jacales Camping Area — Goliad State Park

      Goliad state park

I’m from Goliad, so whenever I feel like getting outdoors I can just drive 15 minutes down the road to the park and enjoy a day hike or a weekend out in the woods. The park is awesome lots of Historic sites and lots of history in such a small town. The park has Tent sites, small cabins for rent and restrooms with showers that are always clean. They also have RV hook ups with plenty of room and shade trees. The nature trail is nice too. Definitely recommend for anyone that has not visited before.

    What to do

Paddling excursions: Goliad State Park provides access to river paddling routes with designated launch points. According to John H., the park is a "nice paddle destination" with access to waterways suitable for canoes and kayaks at Longhorn Camping Area.

Shell collecting: The shell-covered beaches provide opportunities for collectors to find diverse marine specimens. "The sand is mostly varying sizes of crushed shell so careful walking barefoot," advises one Magnolia Beach visitor.

    What campers like

Beachfront proximity: At Magnolia Beach, vehicles can park directly adjacent to the water. Cindy reports, "We are in heaven at this campsite. It's free and on the beach," highlighting the unique waterfront access that distinguishes this location from inland camping areas.

Natural soundscape: The gentle waves and coastal wildlife create a peaceful auditory environment. John C. from Magnolia Beach notes, "Plenty of space water is very calm not much noise especially at night definitely would go back."

Wildlife viewing: Coastal areas provide opportunities to observe native species in their natural habitats. "You can watch the ships go by, the fish jump, seagulls and sandpipers running around the beach all day, I have been told, dolphins occasionally swim through," shares Elisha L.

River access: Hollywood Bottom Park offers direct river access for small watercraft. According to one visitor, it's a "Great rest stop while on the Colorado River. The next access site is 18 miles downstream," making it valuable for multi-day paddling trips at Hollywood Bottom Park.

    What you should know

Beach camping surfaces: The shell composition at Magnolia Beach requires appropriate footwear and ground protection. "No sand, only rocks. One set of bathrooms was very dirty and the other set were locked," reports a recent visitor, indicating variable conditions.
