Camping areas near Eden, Texas span rugged Hill Country terrain at elevations between 1,600-2,200 feet. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures routinely exceeding 95°F and mild winters with occasional freezes. Several campgrounds provide yurt and cabin accommodations as alternatives to traditional tent camping, with most sites offering shade trees for protection from the intense summer sun.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park has fishing docks for anglers seeking bass and catfish. Water levels fluctuate seasonally. "Beautiful lake with a beach. Lovely trees everywhere around your sites. Gravel but mostly level," notes Jeff N.
Nature trails: Fort Mason City Park features walking paths through wooded areas with consistent wildlife sightings. "This section is in the far back of the park, closest to the nature trail. It's a large area to accommodate a lot of tents but there are only 3 electricity poles," explains Amie M.
Boating access: During peak season, Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area offers boat rentals directly on Lake Nasworthy. "During the summer months they rent boats and have a little store on site. I'll definitely go back when I'm passing through," shares Dennis S.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Campers consistently mention the generous spacing between sites at Lakeside Park. "Very big well spaced lakeside sites. Wanted to add more days but the weekends book full. Plan ahead and book early," advises R B.
Wildlife viewing: Deer sightings occur regularly at Flatrock Park, especially during dawn and dusk hours. "This RV campground is beautiful and away from any road or city sounds and light pollution," reports Chris H.
Yurt camping options: For those interested in yurt camping near Eden, Texas, Fort Mason City Park offers comfortable options with electricity access. "Very nice host, very affordable, really enjoyed our short stay," says Carl M. regarding their yurt camping experience.
What you should know
Reservation timing: COE Hords Creek Lake books quickly, particularly for weekend stays. "We stayed in loop 2 site 149. Very big well spaced lakeside sites. Wanted to add more days but the weekends book full. Plan ahead and book early," advises R B.
Seasonal considerations: Flatrock Park operates only from May through September, unlike other year-round facilities in the region. "This would be 5 stars but there are very few full hookup spots with sewer. Go to Recreation.gov to reserve your spot," suggests Chris H.
Bathroom facilities: Quality varies between campgrounds. Red Arroyo Campground has functional but aging facilities. "This place suffers from long term neglect. Peeling paint, broken trim. It's a beautiful place. Great views. Bison, long horn and tons of deer," reports Bruce.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Fort Mason City Park offers two playground options for children. "There is a rundown playground in the main park and there is a newer playground in the middle of the baseball fields. We were here for a week with a 3 year old and we stayed mostly on the property," shares Amie M.
Safety lighting: Some campgrounds maintain nighttime lighting for security. "Security wise - there are streetlights on everywhere. I don't know if they are on all night so you won't have a true 'camping' experience of star gazing but you can peek out your tent if needed," notes Amie M.
Wildlife education: Children can observe deer at multiple locations. "This camp ground is quite in the middle of nowhere, but surprisingly cute. One thing that stunned us was the family of deers that seem to visit every evening! That was a lovely surprise for us!" says Andrea.
Tips from RVers
Hookup options: San Angelo KOA provides full-service sites with cable TV and wifi. "Well maintained full service park with plenty of amenities. More than we are used to. The price was average for 30 amp hookups with wifi, cable tv, restrooms, shower and laundry," reports George B.
Site selection: For optimal shade coverage, RVers should request specific sites. "Our door faced the west & trees were not close enough to our RV to block out the evening sun. We did have a lakefront view, but the lake is WAY down. If I had a choice of any spot in the park, it would be #73," advises Pam J.
Military access: Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area requires military credentials for entry. "We only stayed overnight but it was very pleasant. It's NOT located on base. Make sure to confirm location when you reserve. It's several miles away from base. Reservations and military required," cautions Wendie K.
