Warriors' Path State Park spans 950 acres along the shores of Fort Patrick Henry Lake in northeast Tennessee. Located just 15 miles from Gray, this state park experiences mild springs and falls with summer temperatures averaging 85°F and winter lows rarely dropping below freezing. The terrain features rolling woodland hills with elevation changes of approximately 150 feet throughout the campground areas.
What to do
Boat rentals and water activities: At Warriors' Path State Park, visitors can rent kayaks and paddle boards directly from the marina during summer months. "This amazing campground has spots for tent and rv camping, hiking trails, a beautiful lake for kayaking and fishing, and a Marina where rentals are available!" notes Natalie A. about Warriors' Path State Park Main Campground.
Disc golf course: The park maintains an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through wooded areas and open fields. "My son and I enjoyed a round of disk golf while my wife and daughters made use of their awesome playground," says Jedidiah J. who visited Warriors' Path State Park.
Fly fishing: The Nolichucky River provides excellent trout fishing opportunities year-round. "Stonefly is a true gem! We parked with van doors opened to the bubbling creek and had the natural white noise as a backdrop all night. Watched the fly fisherman on the bank catch a few rainbow trout," reports a visitor to Camp Stonefly.
What campers like
Lake access: Multiple camping areas provide direct water access for swimming and fishing. "We stayed at #86 which was off the main campground overlooking the lake. The site was perfect for our 23 ft RV... Overall we loved the campground and view of the water," shares Jennifer H. about her stay at Warriors' Path.
Historical attractions: Many campers appreciate the region's historical sites. "The park also has events scheduled. They had a cloggers dance group when we were there, which was very nice," writes Katrin M. about her experience at Roan Mountain State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathhouses. "The bathhouse was exceptionally nice and there was also laundry and wifi available," reports Gregg G. about his December visit to Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park Campground.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Some campgrounds have significant differences between sites. "The main camping section was laid out long ago, with older style short sites and water/electric only. Many of the sites are narrow and some have challenging access. Be sure to read site descriptions and check the suggested trailer size—they seriously mean the max size!!" advises Sara M. at Warriors' Path.
Seasonal considerations: Spring brings wildflowers while summer can be busy. "We spent Thanksgiving here! Loved it! Was a little chilly out but the kids still played jumping in leaf piles," shares Travis R. about his off-season visit to Warriors' Path.
Noise levels vary: Some campgrounds experience more noise than others. "The only negative about our site would be traffic noise from the nearby bridge," notes Jennifer H. about Warriors' Path, while Justin C. mentions at Cedar Ridge Hammock Campground: "It is setup directly next to the overflow parking and pool along with the main thoroughfare into the park that's a bummer. It is so LOUD. There's also a freight rain that goes by every couple hours."
Tips for camping with families
Playground options: Warriors' Path offers extensive play areas for children of all abilities. "Brought our family here for the end of spring break and had a blast. The kids loved riding thir bikes and scooters on the paved road through the park. My son and I enjoyed a round of disk golf while my wife and daughters made use of their awesome playground," reports Jedidiah J.
Educational opportunities: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Gray offer ranger programs. "In the warm seasons they have a ranger that comes around and even little events for kids. I remember picking apart an owl pellet with the ranger. Very outdoor educational," recalls Travis R. from his childhood visits to Warriors' Path.
Swimming options: Little Oak Campground provides lake swimming in a natural setting. "When the boats go quiet. Spacious sites; peaceful campground; clean showers," notes Van M. about swimming at sunset at Little Oak Campground.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Many sites in the area require proper equipment. "Really nice facility near town. There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks. That said, great campground," advises Michelle I. about Warriors' Path State Park.
Site sizing considerations: Always verify site dimensions before booking. "My 5th wheel is 43' and I got it in to one of their 40' sites," shares Travis R. about Warriors' Path, while Kate S. cautions: "The only issues we had were several of the sites were too small for even our pop up camper, no way an RV can fit. You really need to scout the sites beforehand."
Full hookup availability: For those seeking full hookups, specific areas offer better options. "The newly updated section, Moody Bluff, has FHU and a number of pull-through sites. It only has trees around the edge of one side giving it an open field feeling," explains Sara M. about the newer section at Warriors' Path.
