What to do
Hiking trails access: At Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, well-maintained bike paths connect multiple beaches and recreational areas. "This beautiful campground has a bike trail that connects all the beaches. It has hiking trails, parks, and a georgous lake for swimming or boating," notes a regular visitor.
Fishing options: Multiple fishing spots are available within close proximity to cabin rentals. "Easy access. Pretty. Great fishing and boating, and sailing. Clean. Campsites are not sitting on top of each other," explains a camper about the water recreation opportunities.
Winter hunting base: Cabins provide comfortable shelter during hunting season. A visitor at Cabin Area — Niobrara State Park mentioned that "In the winter months, hunters often use the cabins as home base and hunt in the surrounding woods." The park offers access to woodlands where seasonal hunting is permitted according to state regulations.
What campers like
Cabin privacy: Sites are designed to maximize space between accommodations. "The cabins are very nice and we were allowed to bring our dogs," noted a visitor who appreciated the cabin amenities and pet-friendly policies at Niobrara State Park.
Playground access: Families appreciate the recreational facilities for children near cabin areas. At Chief White Crane Recreation Area, "Our family liked this place so much that we actually changed our itinerary to stay an extra night. The kids and pets especially enjoyed it! There is a huge green space in the middle of the campground, and all around the campground are several fantastic playgrounds."
Viewing platforms: Strategic locations offer wildlife and landscape viewing. "Take a short hike to see where the Niobrara river dumps into the Missouri and take in some of the best views in Nebraska," shares a visitor about the observation points in the area.
What you should know
Shower facilities: Prepare quarters for pay showers at some locations. "Showers but you pay for them, bring your quarters. It is pretty open between sites," warns a camper about the facilities at East Midway — Lewis And Clark Recreation Area.
Variable pad sizes: Some cabin areas have limitations for larger vehicles. At Wildwood Acres Park, "I would have given this nice little campground a 3-star rating, but I felt the 8 foot pads were a little bit too small. To be fair, they have placed a handful of larger pads throughout, but it would be insanely cramped for larger units to maneuver and even turn their rigs around."
Off-season considerations: Water systems may be shut down during colder months. A March visitor noted, "We are staying at a basic tent camping site. There is available to us a pit toilet. Water is still shut down for the season. Luckily, they do offer off-season rates."
Tips for camping with families
Shared spaces: Large communal areas provide room for children to play safely. "The kids and pets especially enjoyed it! There is a huge green space in the middle of the campground, and all around the campground are several fantastic playgrounds as well as a small beach and a dock," explains a family at Chief White Crane Recreation Area.
Swimming options: Multiple swimming areas accommodate different skill levels. "We were there the first day the pool opened for the year so the water was very cold but we had so much fun. We did some hiking and a lot of bike riding," shares a visitor about their experience at Niobrara State Park.
Budget alternatives: Less expensive cabin options exist for cost-conscious families. At Wildwood Acres Park, "They have 2 cabins that are available. The entire campground is an easy stones throw from the city swimming pool. There are 2 large picnic pavillions, and electricity is provided."
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on proximity to amenities. At Weigand Campground — Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, "We stayed at site 32 on Weigand campground and our friends stayed next to us on 34. I would recommend either site. Site 32 was a little tight with a 28' 5th wheel and a 20' long truck. Site 34 has an extended width pad for some extra parking but is just as short."
Dump station access: Plan ahead for sanitation needs as not all locations have year-round facilities. "Only electricity is available at the pads, dump station had no water to clean out as of 10/2022," warns an RV camper about limitations at certain times of year.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity can affect cabin stays in some locations. "Finally, I have to mention the highway ¼ mile away. Heavy semi traffic. Campgrounds are located at the bottom of a hill. Those semi's blast those Jake brakes. Over and over again. 2 days of that, and we left early and drove to a new campground."
