Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Big, beautiful lake!

Great park! Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites. Electric sites near the lake. We stayed at site #96. New Bathrooms are under construction. Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. Dog park nearby. Camp is near beach & marina. Also many shops and restaurants within a 10 minute drive. We will definitely be coming back to Mosquito Lake!

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

Well kept park with good spot spacing

Stayed here the first weekend of October.  Nice spots and many have good spacing from your neighbors.  Pets are welcome.  Facilities are older but well kept.  Bathhouse is heated with showers that have a fiberglass tub surround, not concrete.  Nice hiking trails that connect through the campground.  Hiking trail maps are not great but the trails are marked well. The Lake is a good walk and looks good for kayaking and fishing.  Brought our kayaks but it was a bit too cold.  Big wide spots are 11 and 16.  Nice hammock hangers on the non-electric spots.

    Breakneck Campground

Loud, party-like atmosphere; rules not enforced

My boyfriend and I camped here last weekend; unfortunately it did not go well. While I very much enjoyed the facilities, we had an awful experience. Friday night was peaceful, although we had trouble locating the owners and figured we'd find them and pay up the next day. When we got back from a full day of climbing Saturday, a group of at least a dozen had set up camp across the road from us. They were drinking heavily all night (I understand that drinking IS allowed here being a private campground) however posted quiet hours begin at 10 pm. I got about 2 hours of sleep Saturday night total, and the last time I was woken up my watch said 3:48 am. Clearly there is absolutely no enforcement of the quiet hours whatsoever. In addition, the group had lights on all night as well, shining directly over into our campsite and tent. Sunday morning, we still had no luck locating the owners. We ended up putting our cash in an envelop in the mailbox. I emailed them letting them know we had put the money in the mailbox, and also asked about the quiet hour enforcement. I requested a response and heard nothing. I'm disappointed, and as a manager myself would want to know if a customer had a bad experience. I would have to recommend that if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet place to camp and sleep under the stars that you look elsewhere. I'm sad to say this, because I had greatly looked forward to staying here after hearing my boyfriend describe his previous experience and reading other reviews. There is a sign posted when entering "drive like your kids live here" but the campground I experienced was not family-friendly at all.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

    Breakneck Campground

    Nice little campground

Our first visit to this campground and we actually found from using this website! We wanted a secluded site and close to Pittsburgh.

We arrived around 7pm and there was no check in, we drove around for a while trying to find a spot with a fire ring per some helpful campers. There are two really nice spots by the water which were taken, and we only saw one other in the woods (the other 2 were hidden by a large group of people).

We ended up finding a flat spot with some tree cover what was far enough from our neighbors but about as close as a bigger campground. Would be good for larger groups. Ton of flat land for tents but saw some people with smaller campers. Firewood is $5 a bucket and clean and dry. Bring a table cloth for the tables.

Portapot close by but full bath rooms and showers by main lodge. Lots of tent platforms that overlooked into the woods which would be fun, for a smaller 4 person tent though.

As another reviewer stated, there was a super loud group Friday night but Saturday was very peaceful and quiet and we met the owner who checked us in and apologized for the loud group and said he was still getting the campground ready for the season. The price is the same for either spots.

Short walk down cheeseman road to trail entrances to McConnells Mills State Park. Short drive to hells hallow or the covered bridge.

Overall we had a great time and will be back!

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

    Labor Day weekend

Campground was clean and well maintained. Only issue we ran into was that the fire pit was not cleaned out after the last folks. It wasn’t a huge deal but there we had quite a bit of debris and wet ash to deal with. The wash houses scattered throughout are new and very clean. The one across from our site had 4 private bathrooms with a toilet and shower. Very well patrolled and tons of stuff to do within biking/running/driving distance.

Guide to Wampum

The Wampum area sits at the confluence of the Beaver and Shenango rivers in western Pennsylvania, with campgrounds nestled among rolling hills averaging 1,100 feet above sea level. Most campgrounds near Wampum feature oak and maple tree cover, providing natural shade during summer months when temperatures typically range from 75-85°F. Camping season generally runs April through October, with limited winter options available at select locations.

What to do

Creek exploration: near Breakneck Campground: At Breakneck Campground, guests can access stream activities immediately adjacent to primitive campsites. "From our campsite we walked along the creek into McConnells Mill State Park and joined the covered bridge trail. Approx. 30min walk along the creek down into McConnells Mill State Park," reports one visitor. The stream access points offer wading opportunities during summer months.

Archery practice: 5-mile drive from campgrounds: Mosquito Lake State Park offers an archery range for visitors. "We like to bring our bows and use the archery range," notes one regular camper. The range provides targets at various distances and is maintained by park staff from April through September.

Disc golf: under 20 minutes from Wampum: West Branch State Park maintains a disc golf course open to campers. "We also played some disc golf and went geocaching," shared one visitor. The course features moderate terrain with both wooded and open fairways suitable for beginners and intermediate players.

What campers like

Private creek-side camping: Primitive sites at Breakneck Campground offer secluded waterfront locations. "We were right next to the creek, it was super spacious and super private. There's rough terrain so typically these sites are walk in," one camper explained. These sites typically require a short hike from parking areas but offer increased solitude.

Seasonal local vendors: Several campgrounds host weekly markets with local producers. At Mercer-Grove City KOA, "On Saturday morning, Amish people come in and sell their baked goods. A text reminder came from the office. They had canned goods, eggs, and baked items including 1 GF item," noted a visitor. These markets typically operate Saturday mornings during peak season.

Spacious waterfront sites: Many campers praise the lake-adjacent sites at Mosquito Lake State Park. "Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites. Electric sites near the lake," explained one camper. Most waterfront sites require reservations 3-6 months in advance during peak season.

What you should know

GPS routing issues: Several campgrounds report navigation problems. At Mercer-Grove City KOA, "We use both the RV Garmin 890 & RV Trip Wizard and both had us doing some crazy side roads to get into the KOA. Be sure to use the park's directions for an easier drive in." Most campgrounds provide preferred routing information on their websites or confirmation emails.

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven terrain. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," reported a visitor at West Branch State Park. Bringing additional leveling blocks is recommended.

Cell reception limitations: The rolling terrain affects connectivity at several glamping sites close to Wampum, Pennsylvania. "Great place to put your phone away, bc you wont have reception in the valley," noted one visitor to Adventure Bound Shenango Valley. Several campgrounds offer WiFi near their main offices or stores.

Tips for camping with families

Nature playground access: Mosquito Lake State Park offers specialized play areas for younger children. "If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," shares one parent. The nature play area includes seasonal programming led by park naturalists on weekends.

Campsite selection for visibility: Some campgrounds offer family-friendly site arrangements. "Great lots by playground to let kids roam and still watch from a distance," recommends a visitor to Adventure Bound Shenango Valley. These supervised play areas typically operate from 9am until dusk.

Unique activities beyond standard amenities: Campgrounds near Wampum offer specialized recreation options. "They have a nice heated large pool, hiking trails close to some great places like McConnells mill, Morane state park, Fishing the shenango river," notes a camper about Rose Point Park Cabins & Camping. Most special activities require advance registration at campground offices.

Tips from RVers

Alternative dump options: Some campgrounds accommodate non-guests for specific services. At Mercer-Grove City KOA, "They permit non guests to utilize the dump site at a small fee $20 (during non peak times)." This service is typically available Monday through Thursday outside holiday periods.

Seasonal site advantages: Many campgrounds have dedicated seasonal areas. "They seem to have a lot of seasonal people at this campground. It is close to Moraine State Park," noted a cabin guest at Rose Point Park Cabins & Camping. Seasonal sites generally require contracts signed by February for the upcoming season.

Hookup availability varies widely: Tomlinson Run State Park Campground offers selective utilities. "Nice simple, small campground sites are for everyone, RV to tent, older bathhouses but clean," explains one visitor. Most campgrounds in the region provide water spigots within 100 feet of each site, but direct hookups vary significantly.
