What to do
Mountain biking on Allegrippis Trails: Seven Points campground connects directly to this renowned trail system. "Ridge camp is the furthest away from the marina and the public swimming area. However it's the closest to the Allegrippis Trail system and from the entrance of the camp loop there is a trail head!" writes Travis S. The 40+ mile network features flowing singletrack suitable for various skill levels.
Dark sky stargazing: Black Moshannon State Park offers exceptional night sky viewing due to minimal light pollution. "Your are also close to Penn's Cave. Cavern tour in PA in a boat! Right near the Rothrock Forest which also offers awesome trail runs!" notes Amanda H. The campground's location atop a mountain provides clear viewing conditions on cloudless nights.
Creek wading and exploration: Poe Paddy State Park Campground provides direct access to Penn's Creek. "The creek and river are perfect for curious little ones to explore. Great fishing spot. The walk to the tunnel is quick and easy for all ages," says Sarah. Many sites have paths leading directly to the water's edge.
Historical ironworks tours: Greenwood Furnace State Park Campground preserves a 19th-century iron-making community. "Very interesting history of the old furnaces. Gorgeous park - very PA-scenic!" writes Melanie Z. The blacksmith shop offers demonstrations during summer weekends, providing educational opportunities for visitors.
What campers like
Boat-accessible campsites: At Seven Points, several sites allow boats to be tied up directly at your campsite. "With the exception of our neighbors, we were the only tents in the loop (the other sites had RVs, and there are 2 cabins and 2 yurts on the loop as well). Firewood is for sale at the camp host site," notes Danielle S. These premium locations provide both camping and water access without moving your vehicle.
The unique color of Black Moshannon Lake: Black Moshannon State Park Campground features a distinctive dark-water lake. "Great camping area stop a mountain...nice unique lake that is incredibly dark in color. Lilly pads abound with great flowers," writes Clay P. Another camper explains, "The Iron Ore mines from the past have left the creek water stained red which is why its called the Red Mo with the locals."
Off-grid experience with modern conveniences: Glamping yurts at Russell P. Letterman Campground provide a balance of nature and comfort. "We stayed at site 78 on the Sycamore loop at the end of April in a tent, which isn't the best equipment for this campground. Our site had a blacktop driveway, a very small amount of gravel, and a ton of mud," shares Danielle S., indicating why many visitors prefer the campground's structured accommodations.
Affordable activities: Buttonwood Campground offers extensive recreation options. "Plan on spending $20 per person for an activity wristband that includes all the extras including mini golf and tubing shuttle," advises Bryan S. This all-inclusive approach provides value for families wanting to maximize entertainment during their stay.
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Many campgrounds have limited or no connectivity. "Don't bring your electronics you won't need them here! No cell phone reception unless you drive a few miles down the road to a cute little store called Couch's!" shares Amanda H. about Greenwood Furnace. Similarly, Poe Paddy has "NO cell service and park rangers do 'rounds' but aren't stationed at the site."
Waterfront site considerations: At Susquehannock, lakefront sites are highly sought after but may have quirks. "Most of the campsites are on a slight slope but they're still bearable. Also a lot of them are waterfront sites which is convenient for swimming in the summer!" explains Madelyn D. Be prepared for boat noise during summer months.
Winter options are limited: Most campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October. Seven Points operates "early apr-late oct" while Black Moshannon extends slightly longer from "2nd Friday April to December 15," making it one of few options for late fall camping.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Prince Gallitzin State Park offers diverse recreation. "Good trails, kayak rentals, and a private beach for the campgrounds make it a nice vacation spot," notes A.R. R. The campground also features "a BMX track for kids," making it suitable for active families with varied interests.
Educational opportunities: Russell P Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park offers wildlife viewing. "We discovered one of the evening talks about the eagles nesting in the park and the ranger set up binoculars for us to try and see the nest," shares Cheryl W. These ranger-led programs provide learning experiences for children.
Playground proximity: When selecting a site, consider proximity to play areas. "The park has a playground and lake to swim in (though it was too cold for us to use it), as well as the historical furnace itself to explore," reports Diane T. about Greenwood Furnace State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: At Buttonwood Campground, the layout creates distinct camping experiences. "The campground is divided by a local road and has 2 different feels. The lower section is right by the river with several riverfront sites and many river view sites. The upper side has the playground and kids activities," explains Bryan S.
Leveling and setup: Seven Points Campground has exceptionally level sites in some loops. "We pulled into Ridge Camp and drove a little bit down a hill to our site. One backup attempt into the site and (according to our LevelMatePRO app) it was perfectly level...that was definitely a first for us," reports Tim J. This can significantly reduce setup time and frustration for RV campers.
