The Galeton area sits at approximately 1,300 feet elevation in Pennsylvania's northern tier, with surrounding ridges reaching 2,300 feet. This region experiences distinct seasonal changes, with winter temperatures often dropping below freezing from November through March. Camping cabins near Galeton provide shelter options in an area known for its dark skies and extensive ATV trail networks.
What to do
Stargazing at Cherry Springs: Located about 8 miles from Lyman Run State Park Campground, this certified Dark Sky area offers exceptional night sky viewing. "We were there in order to go to nearby Cherry Springs SP which is a certified Dark Sky area, to see the stars. Cherry Springs is about 8 miles away. We like staying at Lyman Run since Cherry Springs gets filled pretty quickly," notes Peggy S. at Lyman Run State Park Campground.
ATV trail access: Multiple trail systems connect directly to camping areas. "This park we learned is actually open all year round, so if you come at the right season, it can be magically scenic. We stayed here for a few nights and enjoyed the area because of it having ATV trails that lead out of the park," says Joshua L. about Lyman Run.
Hiking the Pine Creek Gorge: The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon offers varying difficulty levels on well-maintained trails. "There are 2 campgrounds, one right by the lake (larger) and one a little further away (smaller). We prefer the smaller one. Nice hiking trails, beach area by lake, fishing and then the stars! One of my favs," according to a visitor at Lyman Run.
What campers like
Dark sky viewing: The absence of light pollution makes this region special for astronomy enthusiasts. "Lyman Run holds a special place for me. It's nestled within the gold level dark sky area. This means on a clear night and with a waning or new moon, one could see the arm of the Milky Way with millions of stars- more than most people see in a lifetime," writes Bill G. at Ole Bull State Park Campground.
Creek access: Many cabins and sites are situated near water features. "What a great park. The site was very spacious! Plenty of room! Bathrooms were clean! Plenty of shade and trees to hang your hammock for relaxing! There are some short trails through the campground!" explains Amanda H. from Hills Creek State Park Campground.
Quiet atmosphere: Visitors appreciate the peaceful settings away from city noise. "We were at the Lower Campgrounds. It was perfect. It was so quiet and peaceful, did not even notice other campers around. Bathhouse was very clean. Had a good time fishing at the lake and stopping for ice cream at the beach shop is a must!" shares Michelle L. about her stay at Lyman Run.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Be prepared to disconnect during your stay. "Beautiful area all around. Up the road is cherry springs, known as our only Dark Sky Park in PA. The night sky is amazing. There is a lake to do many activities, and a beach there. ATV trails, hiking, beautiful overlooks. No cell service, so you really get to get away from everything," advises Katie S. from Lyman Run.
Weather preparation: Temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, particularly in spring and fall. "We decided to go mid October due to a new moon and a trip to Cherry Springs to see the stars! Ole Bull was just a short drive from Cherry Springs and they had everything we needed except the firewood they said they sold," reports Kelly C. from Ole Bull State Park.
Distance to provisions: Full grocery stores require significant driving time. "The nearest town is almost 45+ minutes away. But hey, there's a Fox's Pizza there, so... win?" notes a camper at Colton Point State Park Campground, emphasizing the remote nature of the region.
Tips for camping with families
Lake activities: Several campgrounds offer swimming and boating opportunities. "There is a lake to do many activities, and a beach there. ATV trails, hiking, beautiful overlooks," explains Katie S. about Lyman Run State Park's recreational options.
Educational programs: Look for ranger-led nature talks. "The rangers offer educational programs that are free of charge! Near by attractions: PA Grand Canyon! Beautiful! Go for the day and take hike!" recommends a visitor at Hills Creek State Park.
Playground access: Some campgrounds have designated play areas for children. "There are games for the kids, a small playground, bingo games for the adults, movie nights, clean outhouse restrooms, and a nice atmosphere," shares Harlee B. from Pine Creek Vista Campgrounds.
Tips from RVers
Reservation timing: The most desirable sites book quickly, especially during summer and fall foliage seasons. "This is one of the main attractions for the area. Locals come here when the weather is nice," explains Joshua L. from Hills Creek, highlighting the popularity that affects availability.
Site selection considerations: Choose based on your shade preferences and proximity to amenities. "We weren't impressed with the camping area. There was very little shade in most campsites so we were glad we had a cabin," advises Barbara S. who stayed at Hills Creek.
Hookup availability: Full-service sites are limited but available. "The campground was really close to Cherry Springs, where we could go stargazing! It is also close to Lyman Lake where we could go swimming and kayaking and fishing," shares Annie C. from Potter County Family Campground, which offers full hookup sites with water/electric/sewer.
