Cabin camping near Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania offers year-round opportunities in the Endless Mountains region at elevations around 2,000 feet. The area experiences distinct seasonal changes with summer temperatures typically ranging 10-15 degrees cooler than surrounding lowlands. Nighttime temperatures can drop significantly even in summer months, requiring proper preparation for overnight stays.
What to do
Hiking to waterfalls: Ricketts Glen State Park offers exceptional waterfall hiking with 22 named waterfalls. "The biggest draw to this state park (which no one in Pennsylvania I spoke with seemed to know about) is the 22 waterfalls! We saw 18 of them on a four-mile moderate hike, but if you want to see the additional four, you could make it a seven-mile hike," notes Lee D. from Ricketts Glen State Park Campground.
Stream wading: Many cabin sites provide direct access to streams and creeks. At Lake Glory Campground, "Kids can wade in the water to cool off while parents are chatting and cooking just few feet away," according to Eiron S. The creek-side sites are particularly popular during warmer months.
Fishing: Stocked lakes and streams provide ample fishing opportunities. "The lake is stocked and the fish are always hungry," reports Vince L. about Lake Glory Campground. Several campgrounds maintain fishing ponds that don't require a trip off-site.
What campers like
Quiet forest settings: The cabins around Eagles Mere offer seclusion in heavily wooded areas. "It feels like you're in another world, or at least separated from the daily hassles and vexations of society, with a wall of a mountain between you and them," explains TheKajrak about their stay at Worlds End State Park Campground.
Private bathroom facilities: Many cabins have upgraded bathrooms. At Pioneer Campground, the individual shower rooms provide extra privacy. "I do have to say I love the bath houses here. They are each their own individual rooms split into shower/changing room. I like the privacy and it made it much easier when my daughter was small," reports Gayle B.
Cooler temperatures: The elevation provides natural cooling. "When it is brutally hot, this Campground is always cool. Large shaded sites that you don't feel like your right on top of the next camper," writes James P. about Pioneer Campground, making it a welcome retreat during summer heat waves.
What you should know
Cabin quality varies widely: Some cabins require significant updating while others offer newer amenities. At Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA, cabins range from basic to deluxe models with more amenities. "We have stayed here with family before and had our first RV stay on our own this fall. Beautiful campground, most sites are wooded," reports Traci F.
Off-grid considerations: Cell service is limited or non-existent in many areas. "No cell service, which is refreshing. The sound of the creek nearby is really soothing," mentions Katy R. about Worlds End State Park. This disconnection can be either a benefit or challenge depending on your needs.
