Overview:

NOTE: Chickahominy Reservoir was nearly dry in 2022. An abundance of area snowpack and subsequent ground-moisture content could very-likely refill the reservoir in 2023, however, the fishery may underproduce. It will be restocked in 2023 if conditions are favorable. One of Eastern Oregon's most popular fishing spots, man-made Chickahominy Reservoir was first stocked with rainbow trout in the summer of 1967. It is still stocked once or twice a year with fingerlings and legal-size fish. The water level fluctuates with the amount of spring run-off and can be low at times, affecting the availability of fisheries. The recreation site offers 28 campsites, a fish cleaning station, drinking water, vault restrooms and a boat ramp. The extensive valley where Chickahominy Reservoir lies is surrounded by foothills, distant buttes and rough ridges - a landscape that provides far-reaching views of the open high desert country.

Know Before You Go:

The fishing season peaks in June and resumes in September as the hot summer weather ends. Ice fishing is popular from December to late February.Shade is limited and strong winds are common; be prepared to tie everything down. Five, eight-inch minimum length trout per day limit; bait is allowed.

Point of Interest:

Wildlife species common to the area include mule deer, pronghorn antelope, black-tailed jackrabbits, coyotes, and ground squirrels. A variety of waterfowl, raptors and songbirds frequent the area as well.Chickahominy Brochure

Good overnite spot

We’ve camped here before on our way to the coast. It’s cheap and I have bell service. (I am using a bell , but probably don’t need it.)

BLM Campground

A nice setting for dry camping. Beautiful views of the high desert country just west of Riley, OR. Sites are gravel and mostly level. Pit toilets are located in the park. It’s our 3rd time camping here, and the first time seeing the reservoir completely dry!

Not Much Here!

Not much here since the lake dried up. It is a good stopping place for a nite or two if your traveling this way. The sites are pretty big. We had plenty of room for our 5th well and truck. It was not crowded at all this Memorial Weekend, as there is not much to do…sad to say. It is very quiet and dark out here. Oh and the wind can get a bit strong as well! There are NO trees to hide behind.. Ha! Ha!

We obtained fuel and water from the Shell Station in Hines as we passed through from Salt Lake City. The staff there are very nice and friendly! We did see a Hines Market just as you got East out of town that has a Dump Station, if you need. Not sure how much space they have for big rigs to maneuver around.

Magical Place

There is no water in the reservoir at this drought time but the campground is well maintained and quite lovely. 360 degree vistas. Quiet. It is likely much busier when there is water, assuming that happens.

No frills but perfect for what I needed

The reservoir was empty when I was there, but I just need a place to sleep with good cell signal. AT&T worked well enough that I was able to work from site. Barebones site but the pit toilets were clean and I pretty much had the place to myself.

Gem in the Dessert

We pulled up at 11 PM and had several lots to choose from. Gale winds made for a nice rocking to sleep. Clean and excellent stargazing skies.

Amazing location for BLM camping

We stayed one night here, and it was amazingly peaceful and quiet. We expected dispersed camping, but were pleasantly surprised by the campsites. No hookups, but a picnic table and grill/firepit were at every campsite. Pit toilet buildings were located in several areas. Sites were semicircular with gravel. Easier to disconnect/hookup tow vehicles in the paved parking area by the boat launch/ramp.

Open but quiet with beautiful views.

This campground is right by a reservoir but not much mosquitos. The ground is hard which made putting the stakes in the ground difficult. Vault toilets but clean. Beautiful sunset.
