What to do
Mountain biking: Explore the Peterson Ridge Trail System near Sisters, accessible from cabin rentals at Bend / Sisters Garden RV Resort. The resort offers a convenient location for riders of all skill levels. "We stayed in our motorhome with tow. Level sites impeccably kept. FHU cable tv Wi-Fi. Small lake on property," notes Robert O.
Fishing: Access three boat launches at Lake Simtustus RV Park where cabin guests can rent pontoon boats and kayaks without bringing their own watercraft. "Good small dock and spot to camp. Good fishing off dock and near the campground," reports Sarah W. The lake is stocked with trout throughout the summer.
Hiking: Trek the 7-mile trail at The Cove Palisades State Park with access directly from the campground. "Cove Palisades State Park is one of my favorite Central Oregon destinations. Lake Billy Chinook is simply stunning, and there is a great hike, the Tam-A-Lau trail, that goes right from the campsite," writes Christian.
What campers like
Private bathrooms: Individual cabin facilities at Cove Palisades Lookout eliminate nighttime walks to communal restrooms. "The cabins were close together but far enough apart for privacy. They each had their own private bathrooms also so no walking in the dark to the bathrooms at midnight," notes Darla G.
Cleanliness: Maintained facilities throughout Tumalo State Park Campground receive consistent praise from guests. "Great campground, clean bathrooms and showers, good size campsites," reports Josh P. The park enforces quiet hours strictly, creating a peaceful environment for cabin guests.
Proximity to towns: Quick access to amenities makes cabin stays more convenient. "Only a 10 minute drive from Bend, Tumalo offers a sophisticated camping experience. Heated individual showers, clean bathrooms, and quick access to firewood are a big step up from the usual camping basics," explains Miguel C.
What you should know
Highway noise: Traffic sounds carry across Lake Billy Chinook and affect some cabin sites. "The only downside to the campground is the road noise. With a highway on the other side of the lake, there's a constant white noise of cars," notes Ryan F. at Blue Bay Campground.
Weather variations: Prepare for cold nights even during summer visits. Temperatures can drop 30-50 degrees from daytime highs. "I had a great time, but make sure to bring warm clothes though—it can get pretty cold!" advises Miguel C.
Seasonal operations: Verify opening dates for your preferred cabin location. Several parks operate on limited schedules, with Deschutes River Campground open "mid May to mid September" and others requiring advance planning.
Tips for camping with families
Educational programs: Attend ranger presentations at Prineville Reservoir Main Campground which offers structured activities for children. "The educational programs are outstanding! The amenities are well cared for and the surroundings are incredible!" explains Rayne C.
Swimming areas: Look for designated zones with roped-off sections for safer water play. "Large grassy areas, big roped off swimming hole it can get blazing hot a few stickers so wear river shoes for swimming or at least getting there," advises Ashley B.
Game facilities: Find onsite recreation at cabin-equipped campgrounds. "Redmond/Central Oregon KOA is such a beautiful place to come and camp. They have a pool, and they also have a place where you can rent bikes and petal-kart rentals. My family and I did this one morning and had an absolute blast," shares Julie P.
Tips from RVers
Shared amenities: Use communal facilities at The Camp to enhance cabin stays. "They have a really great common area with a gas fire pit, 2 gas grills, tables, and corn hole. They also have heated bathrooms and laundry trailers," explains Christian.
Propane services: Check for onsite delivery at select locations. "One of my favorite perks was if you put out your propane tank in front of your spot, they'll pick it up, refill it and deliver back," notes Pops A.
Site selection strategy: Research cabin locations before booking. "About 5 miles off main highway, on the edge of Lake Simtustus, they have boat slips, pontoon boats and kayaks to rent. 200 foot drop from office to lakeside, but they provide golf carts at no extra charge to go up and down the hill!" explains Paul Y.
