Located within the Grande Ronde Valley at an elevation of 2,800 feet, the camping area surrounding Cove, Oregon offers a mix of high desert and alpine ecosystems. Summer temperatures typically reach mid-80s during day and drop to mid-40s overnight. The region maintains several year-round campgrounds while some operate seasonally from mid-April to mid-October.
What to do
Mineral soaking pools: At Grande Hot Springs RV Resort, visitors can enjoy therapeutic hot spring pools. "The soaking pools were amazing. They even had a twilight soak. Very peaceful and relaxing campground," notes Cheryl S. The resort features two pools with different temperatures: "One pool is warm and the other is hot. I was grateful for the health benefits of the mineral soak," according to Ursala K.
Fishing access: Minam State Recreation Area provides direct access to productive fishing waters. "This place is amazing. Clean, convenient, and right on a productive stretch of the Minam River. Near the confluence of the Minam and Wallowa rivers, this is a perfect base camp for exploring the waters and towns of the Wallowa mountains," reports Tom B. The $10/night fee provides excellent value for anglers.
Creek exploration: Several campgrounds offer creek access for cooling off during summer months. "I spent 5 nights here in August. Was lucky enough to get a campsite right on the creek. Loved it!" shares Cat T. about Catherine Creek State Park Campground.
What campers like
Affordable camping options: Free and low-cost camping makes the area accessible for various budgets. "For $6 (!) you get a great spot literally just a few dozen feet from the water. Fan-freaking-tastic!" writes Tom B. about Minam State Recreation Area. For free camping, Pilcher Creek Reservoir offers "Free camping on a lake not too far from the freeway. Good roads to the campsite. There are pull through and back in sites that would accommodate good-sized rigs," according to Kristi R.
Wildlife viewing: The region provides opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Nature trail along the creek was cool. Saw huge bull frogs, tadpoles, and fish. Also saw mule deer," reports Cheryl S. about Grande Hot Springs RV Resort. At Pilcher Creek Reservoir, campers note varied wildlife sightings: "I saw Lots of elk and turkeys(?) and a rattlesnake," mentions Mel B.
Overnight convenience: Many sites work well as stopover locations. "Pulled in and the site looked great and was in a very convenient location," writes Jacob B. about Hilgard Junction State Park Campground. "This is a nice well maintained place with clean facilities and well dispersed sites... Nice tree cover and a River right at the edge of where we were," adds Heidi P.
What you should know
Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires navigating gravel or steep roads. "If you approach the campsite from the East, be prepared for a bumpy road. The road from the West (LaGrande) is much better even if it takes you a few miles out of the way," warns Bill B. about Grande Hot Springs RV Resort.
Highway noise: Some campgrounds sit close to highways and experience traffic noise. "Even though the freeway is about 60 yards away and up the hill the traffic noise was muted," notes Steven G. about Hilgard Junction State Park Campground.
Limited water access: Not all campgrounds provide potable water. At Morgan Lake - TEMPORARILY CLOSED, "Pit toilets are available, but no potable water," reports Zachary. Always bring water supplies when visiting more remote sites.
Seasonal limitations: "The campground is usually open until October 31. Paddle boats only. No motors," explains Zachary about Morgan Lake. Check operational dates before planning trips.
Tips for camping with families
Easy water play areas: Look for sites with gentle creek or lake access. "The river is nice to swim in or for rafts/kayaks but as for fishing, we didn't have much luck aside from mountain whitefish," shares Sara S. about Minam State Recreation Area.
Spacious campsites: Wallowa Lake State Park Campground accommodates families needing room to spread out. "Large, pretty open campground. Right on the lake, great for family camping. Lots of hiking nearby!" notes Katie G. The campground offers "a great western and artistic community just at the other end of the lake," according to Joan H.
Pet friendly options: For those camping with dogs near Cove, Oregon, sites provide varying levels of pet accommodations. "Lots of green grass areas and dog areas," mentions Richard H. about Grande Hot Springs RV Resort. This allows families to bring four-legged members without concern.
Tips from RVers
Level parking areas: Multiple campgrounds offer level sites for easier setup. "Very nice RV park. very clean and well maintained. Roads and all sites are gravel. All sites are pull through and can accommodate large RV's," reports Richard H. about Grande Hot Springs RV Resort.
Utility connections: Understand available hookup options. "There's no hook ups but there are water spickets and restrooms," notes Joshua G. about Hilgard Junction State Park Campground.
Dump station availability: Some sites offer sanitary dump stations while others do not. "For some reason the app says there's rv dumps here when there isn't any," cautions Travis T. about Hilgard Junction. Always verify amenities before arrival.
