      Black Mesa night sky

Not only were the stars and Milky Way amazing, but everyone was so respectful with dim red lights in yes. The facilities were very clean and modern. The site itself was private and comfortable. I’d happily book there again for future travel. I used a Thermocell bug device and it handled the bugs quite well.

      Nice Free Resting place

We stopped for 1 night on our trip from Albuquerque to our home in Michigan. Level parking area and clean pit toilets. No water available.

I'm sure it's prettier when the Grass is Green

Quick, one-night stopover. Adequate for what I needed. Toilets, but no shower or water. One big rig was there when I arrived, and a cartop tent camper arrived after dark. Again, fine for me in my teardrop.

      Goathead Heaven!

We got there late last night, the management was friendly and helpful, the spot was nice and flat for the RV, it was quiet and peaceful… and good Lord the goat head stickers were plentiful. My dog was a victim!!

      Great stop, peaceful and quiet

This is a bare bones campground but was a good, quiet stop on our drive. There are composting toilets, trash cans, picnic tables, and bbqs. Clean and just what we needed

Cute park and loved the dinosaur tracks!

Everything was very green in the 10 mile trek into the park. Our spot was in the Cove campground - noon-a and no water. We have enough solar power to sustain. The lake was gorgeous and the dinosaur footprints and tracks were really interesting! The spots are not right on top of each other - so very nice. They have potable water at the visitors center. There were candies with water and electric - we were too late to book.

      Decent Stopover

Swing by on the way to New Mexico. The surrounding area is all flat grasslands, which don’t do much for me in terms of scenery. Bit boring. However, I would much have preferred to stay here overnight instead of the WalMart I wound up at instead! There is a toilet, picnic tables, and is very quiet and easily accessible. Wouldn’t make a trip to stay here, but would definitely use as a stopover.

      Just a stop over

Like everyone else has stated, this is just a spot to stop over for the night. Nothing special, just a gravel lot with a grassy area. There is a restroom, so that was a plus.

      Amazing view

Stayed in September, lots of goat head stickers. So those with pets be aware. Great campsites, bathrooms really nice (we rooftop tent camp). We stayed in the no lights area. Such an amazing view of the stars! We were lucky with a clear night. It’s a don’t miss if you are passing through!

Night Sky Viewing and Dinasaur Tracks

Clayton Lake State Park near Clayton, New Mexico turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is a small state park with several small camogrounds spread around the reservoir which is popular for fishing. Our campground had about a half dozen sites overlooking the lake. The opportunity to see dinasaur tracks and attend star parties make this park unique. The campground host is an amateur astronomer who regularly hosts very well-attendedstar parties. Water and electric were available at our campsite, but the park does not have a dump station.

      Nice comfortable place.

Beautiful area right in the middle of what seems like nothing but prairie. A canyon opens and there is the lake. Various sites, electric were all accounted for. There were plenty of picnic table/shelter primitive spots. Beautiful scenery. Good trails for hiking. Friendly host.

      Stop over.

It is what it is. Arrived as a big storm was on the horizon. Rain all night so I didn't open my popup. It's really in the middle of nowhere and it's a giant rectangle gravel lot with log barrier. Picnic tables and a grills at some parts. Nothing but flat plains as far as you can see. Great for a stop over. No water.

Simple campground to get through Texas

Was heading through Texas to Utah and stopped here for the night. It’s a small picnic area that has plenty of space for tents, but not suitable for large RV’s.

Drove there in a small Chevy Sonic so any car will make it.

      Pros:

      • Small and secluded so not many people will be there
      • Has lots of picnic tables and grills
      • Clean Vaulted Toilets
      • Has trash cans

      Cons:

      • Lots of bugs and flies swarming you
      • No water fill up
      • Extremely dewy mornings

Easy, but limited in some ways

We’ve stayed a few times, there are always spaces. Just pick one and leave money in the drop box. That’s easy. But bathroom access is limited. Both times it’s been unavailable. Not the biggest of deals, but at times a little of an inconvenience. The place is clean and quiet. Stop in for a quick overnight. Oh and some spots have tables with a cover and shade trees too.

Completely check out for the weekend!

Small little park but if you’re looking to completely check out and chill, this is it. There’s a cute little river with swim bitch, nice private shower, and beautiful spacious sites. Every day we saw deer and wild turkey. There’s a nice lake, hiking, and dinosaur tracks. RV sites have 30amp and water. Most hookups are on the passenger side, so make sure your hose and cable are long enough.

Hidden gem of a park, excellent night sky, excellent dinosaur tracks

First, the 10-mile road to this park is fine.  After reading the one review calling the road horrible, we were braced for the worst, but it turned out to be completely fine, not so much as a pothole.  So disregard that.

Second, this park is actually a hidden gem.  It's quite large, with multiple camping sites spread down one side of the lake.  The one location for electrical sites is a bit tightly packed, with not much space between sites, but if you're tent camping or boondocking there is plenty of room in this park at other camping locations to spread out.  And when we stayed mid-week there were only a couple of other trailers in the electrical section, so we didn't feel too crowded ourselves.  The lake is pretty with what seems to be good fishing judging by how many locals were there casting lines in the water.  The sunset views are beautiful, and the night sky is absolutely superb.  We had an amazing view of the total lunar eclipse the night we stayed here in May 2022.

The real attraction of this park, however, is the dinosaur tracks, which are some of the best in the *world*.  It's crazy that they're out here in the middle of nowhere, but if you make the short hike to see them you will be amazed.  The story of how they were discovered, by accident during the construction of the dam for this lake, is equally amazing.  Great park for kids, and great destination if you're traveling along 87 and weighing where to stay between Amarillo and Raton.

      Beautiful place

Only stayed 2 nights but it was amazing. The stargazing is as great as advertised. Not busy at all when we were here, probably 50% capacity.

Brand new shower houses. Some decent hikes. It's a half hour drive to Boise City for fuel, groceries so come prepared.
